Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in on fire, with Parisians taking to social media to share devastating photographs of the historic building engulfed in flames.
Smoke and fire can be seen billowing from the top of the iconic cathedral. The fire appears to be substantial.

Not much else to tell atm, most likely no human casualties.

[EDIT] The roof and spire collapsed.

[EDIT2] The general fireman says at 22h50 that the north tower and the structure seems to be saved. Lot of objects had been saved from the fire. https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/TTLWiBW

[EDIT3] No human casualties, except 2 police men and a fireman lightly wounded.

The first thing I hope for is that nobody got hurt due to it. With that said, it's always very sad when so much of history and culture goes down due to a disaster, so here's also hoping that the fire is controlled soon and the damage turns out not to be very extensive.

Edit: yeah, what khayolin said.

Update: so much for not much damage. The spire (flèche) is gone. Thankfully the fire seems to have started shortly after the visiting hours had ended, so there weren't visitors anymore or they were just about leaving, so it's less likely that anyone got hurt.

The spire and the roof had already been collapsed during WWII but I don't know if it'll get back from this damage this time.

I'm afraid you're misinformed. They weren't collapsed during WWII. The spire was recreated in the 19th century during a massive restoration. But WWII brought only very minor damage.

Some of the best Disney songs, period. I sincerely hope that Notre Dame shall be rebuilt/restored as soon as possible. It's been France's enduring symbol long before Eiffel Tower held that distinction. It predates the latter by 724 years.

I don't know about quickly because the extent of the damage looks huge and it's still burning but it was bombed during WWII and they repaired so I guess it'll see new days.
So sad to think that so much work, blood, sweat and tears can go into a building and it can burn in just under an hour.
The placement and the fact it's most likely a chemical fire makes it hard to control.

Yeah I first saw the flames when I was driving over the bridge right outside the Louvre. The air was orange with it and it's several blocks away.
What a crushing sight. I know it's "just" a building and it seems there was no human injury but it's still devastating.

It's a historically meaningful, artistically impactful, inspirational symbol of human effort, passion, creative spirit, and sense of community. There's a lot to feel negative over and, at heart, the flood of dismay coming out of this affair is completely warranted.

...on the other hand, I feel the media coverage and public response to this matter of a simple building burning down far exceeds what we've gotten on more meaningful tragedies involving the suffering of actual people. This fire may warrant every single bit of coverage and response it is getting but, even so, the fact that certain things are prioritized less is.. disheartening.

Or, to rephrase that: It's more than "just" a building but, at the same time, it's also still less than a person.
Let's not value it less than it deserves.. or value other things less than they deserve.

[Not that it's at all a surpise that the misfortunes of an internationally famous building would get more attention than the affairs of some random non-celebrities, of course; At the same time, though, the current manner by which news stories are weighted is deeply unfortunate.]

I was thinking that as well. As upset as the fire makes me, I wish there was as much coverage about human tragedies. I mean the ones unrelated to shootings and terrorism obviously because we know those sell papers and commercials.

I don't know about favorite, but it does get my appreciation within history-themed civilization builder games, given its emphasis on cultural benefits and its relatively compact size. ..Oh, don't look at me like that- this is a gaming-focused website, after all. :P
And it's not like I've got the resources to travel around and appreciate any real-world architecture.. :S

Heh no judgement here.

We'll always have the internet and Assassin's Creed for that ;)

Speaking of, I'm not sure whether to be impressed or concerned that various wiki entries for now-dated games are already updating with the recent news [>>].

lol yesterday, about 10 minutes after the first videos of the fire hit twitter, somebody was losing their sh*t because the cathedral's wikipedia page had a "status" update saying "on fire". I guess they didn't know wikipedia is really just a click away from any change any time.
I think I'm impressed and concerned at the same time. Also, they should be updating the French in those articles more than anything else.

I drove by the Old Lady today and it's hard to look at it but it's also better than I thought it would be. Still standing proud.
It's going to be years in repairs but hey it's already weathered a massive storm in 1999 that did incredible damage and it looked brand new in just a couple of years. It'll be fine.

Hmm if the fire started in the roof at the Notre Dame, then i think it's just coincidence, if someone want to set something on fire they usually don't start there, nor evidence of arson there?

Could very well been some construction work mishap.

Notre Dame was undergoing renovation work, so the roof was kind of accessible. And more discreet than the permanently overcrowded ground level.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But that's the thing. The previous fire was put out very quickly because it started in the public area and only damaged the wooden door since firemen were called in quickly.
IF there was an arsonist making a dry run, the second largest church in the city would be a good place to start. The fact that the fire started in an area closed to the public where a lot of chemicals were stored thanks to the renovation seems very convenient.
By the time this fire was spotted, after the renovation workers had left, the flames had already engulfed most of the roof and all the upper floor of the cathedral.

It's just all convenient. So far they're saying the renovation might have been "responsible" but these chemicals don't catch fire on their own.

It seems a bit early for conspiracy theories, don't you think? A forgotten cig seems like a more plausible cause for fire than deliberate arson.

Unless the Gilets Gaunes somehow decided to step up the terrorist game :o

No conspiracy theory here. Arson is a pretty common crime and it wouldn't have taken much effort to start a fire in an area where chemicals were being stored. The fire at St Sulpice, the second largest church in Paris, just a few weeks ago, is just a big coincidence, that's all.

Heartbreaking. I lived for a few weeks in the Shakespeare & Co. upstairs library back in 1983, before we moved further out in the 5eme, and Notre Dame was a daily experience - it's hard to imagine Paris without it. Sadly, I don't recall the interior well, though I did go inside it. I used to sit and look at it often. Such a blow to the heart.

Shakespeare & Co and the whole neighborhood has a very special place in my heart. My girlfriend also lived and worked at S&Co for about a month and that's where I met her. We took quite a few walks in the park under the spire.
I was crushed to see the flames earlier and I just cant watch the news right now.

AFP is reporting now that they have saved the main structure, which I take to mean the outer walls and the bell towers. It's a small grace, but it's something. Whitelisted, on account of Shakespeare & Co. and the gravity of the day.

That's a relief at least. I don't know what will happen now or how long it will take to even rebuild and repair but my hat is off to the firemen.
These guys (and quite a few ladies now too) are risking their lives routinely for meager wages and they fought that one hard.
Thanks for the 💙. I whitelisted you as well. Shakespeare & Co remains one of my favorite places in the city. As an expat, it was like a little piece of home and it only gained in significance since then.

Lol, talking shit about ISIS is being a bigot these days?

Mind you, no one knows if this specific tragedy was an act of terrorism or if it even was intentional. It'll take time to conduct the investigation. But it's not a secret that the Islamic State (IS/Daesh/ISIS) destroys landmarks to lower morale and... well, cause panic... it's like they're a terrorist organization.

Note that you said "Bigot". Like fuck does it help that you call criticizing a terror organization a "reactionary bigot bingo" just because it has the word "reactionary" on it.

I even agreed that we can't know about it. I never even went after the "reactionary" part here, since alone it doesn't matter much. But calling critics of ISIS "bigots" is the most insane thing I've heard. It's worse than supporting Hitler in the 30s. At least they had a country in ruins, a populist leader and the lack of foresight to understand what utter evil they supported.

You know who they are. You know what you said. Were you actually thinking, you'd have said exactly what I did. That he can't know this and that he's making a total leap in deduction here. You don't even have to criticize ISIS since it seems to be a bigoted thing in your eyes...

Had you said "Reactionary" alone, it'd make sense. But see, sentences don't work in a modular way, where you make a 20 word sentence and then try and pretend that we were actually supposed to look at 10 of those words.

Lol, what an arrogant little shit. First you claim that condemning ISIS is bigotry and now you say this shit. You aren't as smart as you think you are.

"Bigotry" - "intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from oneself."
It's bloody ironic since you're the bigoted one here according to the definition, while at the same time, it distances you further from the actual definition.

Amazing. Never expected someone on this forum to claim that denouncing terrorists is bigotry. Even better's the fact that those terrorists are literal bigots. Fuck me, these layers irony are as thick as you are.

  1. That's not what reactionary means.
  2. There is nothing bigoted in mentioning the fact that terrorist organizations already do destroy important artefacts.
