Fire is still ongoing.Roof, spire & inside are FUBAR & one of the towers is burning too.The preliminary is that its going to take at least a decade to fix this mess.
I wasn't aware that "restoration" meant "burning the building to the fucking ground".

i just hope nobody got hurt.
the building i dont care much about. its just a thing. athing people could rebuild millions of times if wanted.
im a bit annoyd that more people get sad about a destroyed building than about all those peoples killed around the world because of war, terrorism and fanatism or all of the nature and animals in the rainforest destroyed and killed by men.

Its not really as black and white as you try to perceive it
People dont get sad about houses destroyed in natural disasters and wars neither.
When people die in tragedy near us, everyones sad and care about that, because just as with Notre Dame, its right here, beside us.
Never forget the natural arrogance of modern human - "if its not in my backyard, its not my problem"
So in general people in EU and USA for example dont care about people dying in wars just as they dont care about infrastructure being destroyed by wars.
I get your point and I dont advocate such arrogance towards life, but dont mix all this in one bucket.

Its always tragic when humanity looses monument of historic significance. Never been much for religion or spiritual meaning in churches and cathedrals myself but I have always enjoyed visiting them for cultural heritage and architectural history.
I was surfing facebook and people where already getting into religion wars on "gods wrath" and about ISIS and even so far as blaming green vests.. It just seems facebook gets accessed by more and more low intelligence people everyday.
But what seriously left me baffled was one conspiracy page that was already strapping themselves into tinfoil hats and saying their "theory" is that when gargoyles where removed they stopped protecting the cathedral and thats why it caught fire. And people should "stay put on updates to their theory" ...
At that point I just closed facebook realizing Ive had my share of idiocracy for a month at least..

Didnt knew that one was being rebooted, but had watched the original when growing up.
But why do you suggest me to watch it ? Regarding spirituality ?

It's Easter time and the second biggest church in Paris, the Saint Sulpice church, was vandalized. It's main door was burned on March 17th. Between the beginning of February and the end of March, 10 churches were vandalized. Do you think it's a coincidence? It's obvious that someone attacked these churches.

But all these comments at this point are just hate mongering (on FB). up to this point I only saw one comment that actually mentioned Easter coming up and noticing coincidences. Everyone else is just shitposting
If its proven and it burned due to malicious intent by hand of certain organization or group of people, by any means - say all the bad things you want about them and spread the arrogance of them and try to get them to answer for the crime.
Personally ? No I dont think its a coincidence and I wouldnt be shocked at all if it actually was sabotage. But its just my thoughts, without any proof at this point

The website is in French only to the best of my knowledge, but donating is straightforward enough, I guess they weren't expecting much interest from foreign visitors up until now.
P.S.: Those who pay their taxes in France can get big tax deductions.

Last time I read on SG forum that something bad was happening in my country, it was november 13 attacks in Paris. At least this time nobody died, stones can be rebuilt.

When I heard the news, I felt like a part of me was excised and put in a jar right in front of my eyes. As a historian, this is something you never want to hear about.
But we should remember that the cathedral was bombed and sustained a lot of damage during WWII when the Nazis bombed Paris and they managed to repair it. Then again, I don't think the famous, beloved Rose windows were affected by the bombing.
Surely they have the schematics for them and can refashion a replica so that people can still enjoy the immense beauty in the future. It won't be the same as the original, but copies and replicas are a sad fact I've come to terms with as necessary. The existence of something is sometimes more important than its authenticity as an "original", which is why we have copies of famous statues like The Kiss all over the world.

I am actually training to be a public historian. Medieval architecture isn't my forte. I stupidly took a Twitter post, which mistakenly identified the bombed out Rheims Cathedral of WWI to be the Notre Dame of WWII, at face value. I made a mistake, but thanks for reminding me that I'm just playing at being a functioning human being and the fact that I make mistakes at all in an area of life I'm insanely passionate about is further proof I'm worthless.

Defiantly a tragic event for sure but, why the hubbub on collecting donations to rebuild. I mean didn't they have insurance on it considering the national monument it was.

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in on fire, with Parisians taking to social media to share devastating photographs of the historic building engulfed in flames.
Smoke and fire can be seen billowing from the top of the iconic cathedral. The fire appears to be substantial.

Not much else to tell atm, most likely no human casualties.
[EDIT] The roof and spire collapsed.
[EDIT2] The general fireman says at 22h50 that the north tower and the structure seems to be saved. Lot of objects had been saved from the fire. https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/TTLWiBW
[EDIT3] No human casualties, except 2 police men and a fireman lightly wounded.
