there should be a key verifer so you know the key you got in a trade is not a dup or invalid and it's not tied into your steam account

I think that's impossible to create. If it would be, people would use it for key generators and that kind of crap.

There is no way to check the validity of a key without activating it.

Like the others said, Steam has no way to verify a key outside of activating it.

The only way to verify a key is to activate it on an account, rendering it useless for anyone else.

I got so many keys from trades that turn out to be invalid or dup but couldn't check them without adding it to my library

You should talk about it with your trader.

You know afterwards so either tell them and have them reimburse you or report them and do not trade with them again. It is quite easy to avoid dead keys in trades, or at least get something else worthwhile instead

Well if you already have the game in your account and you enter the key it will not use up the key, so that is one way to verify if the key is used.

But regardless key is used or not you'll get the message that this game is already on your account.

I think it was determined that the product already owned message takes precedent over the duplicate code one, likely for this very reason. You can usually use thise to determine what a key is but not its validity.

Trying a key for a game already owned on the account can only test if the key is a valid key for the game, not if the key has already been used.

What are priorities of these messages? If the key is invalid it would say straight away, apparently. I'm not sure about duplicates though - If it shows "you already own the game" before "duplicate code" or the other way round.

edit: nevermind, question already answered.
