While playing a game, normally the tunes I love the most are the saddest ones, so I'd like to hear your favorite ones under this category. Also an explanation of what happens in the game that makes it so depressing would be appreciated.

SPOILER ALERT, please write the name of the game first to avoid spoiling it, as sure most of them will involve character's deaths.

Mines are:

-Final Fantasy XIII: Dust to dust. Two members of your party have been dormant for centuries in a distant world. When they finally get back to their home, they find a devastated town and its population turned into monsters.

-Final Fantasy XIII-2: Noel's theme/The last travel. This character lives in the future, when almost all mankind has disappeared and only three people are left. His friend and mentor leaves his world to find a way to save his other friend, a little girl victim of a curse that dies shortly after his departure, leaving him all alone in that devastated world.

-Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater: Debriefing. You are forced to kill your mentor, a national hero that has betrayed you and your country and allied with the enemy. After you finally kill her, you find out that everything was just a set up made by the goverment to steal a huge amount of money from the enemy faking the defection of your mentor. When something unexpected puts the plan in danger, she is forced to sacrifice herself in order to keep your country's name clean, while she will be remembered as a monster. Hearing this tune with the ending speech brings tears to my eyes.

TL.DR: just post the damn songs.

358/2 is my single favorite KH game. All of the Nobodies are very sad characters. :'(

Yeah. I still think Roxas should be his own person rather than a figment of Sora.

I was gonna add Mussique pour la tristesse de Xion, but I didn't want to make the thread longer, and yes, he's my favorite character, I hope they bring him back in Kingdom Hearts 3. If you played Dream Drop Distance you can see that what you say could happen.

He's definitely unique enough that that would be very.. interesting, but still, aren't they technically the same person, besides the fact that Roxas is/was a Nobody?

I think it's better how it is right now (I didn't play 3Ds or BBS).

Well, for most of the time it was unclear if Roxas did or didn't had a heart, being Sora as unique as he is, lots of people started thinking that Roxas might have his own heart, as he was capable of showing emotions despite of being a nobody (and not faking them like the others did), but iirc I think Nomura said that he didn't have a heart. Anyway, when you play those games you'll learn much more about it.

I think it's ok that he's just a nobody, but he's my favourite character, so I hope they somehow bring him back. After all, he and Sora existed at the same time for a complete year.

Dangan Ronpa. All of the execution BGM is surprisingly catchy, but if you watch the executions, they're quite... brutal.

EDIT: Also the end song for Bastion. Augh gdo it gives me the chills.

Well, I remember one from inFAMOUS 2.

inFAMOUS 2: "Fade Away"

Both of the 2 endings of the game were pretty sad (one more than the other) and then came the credits with this song and it just made me wanna cry. It was so sad and so "beautiful" at the same time...

Farewell Hyrule King:
The king of Hyrule gets to the conclusion his time is ended, and decides to leave the future of the world in the hands of the two youngs. They cannot understand his feelings, because they're young and full of hope, wich the king hasn't anymore.

Room of Angel:
Well it's the game intro, it's depressing and I really like it, I don't need anything else to explain :D .

Max Payne 2 Theme:
No need to explain it, the whole game is depressing.

Find Your Way (piano version)
I remember walking in that labyrinth where you find the minotaur G.F.

Also, I totally agree with the OP for Debriefing.

Already mentioned sadface:
KH: 358/2 days - Vector to the Heavens

NieR - Emil sacrifice
This game is clearly underrated.

Persona 3 - Memories of the City
It really felt like a goodbye, after this song began to play on the last days of the game.
I really felt like I need to go and say goodbye to every character. q-q

Bastion - Setting Sail, Coming Home
Hands down, this is the most epic Indie game, made by human.
Great story, great artstyle, great music.
What makes this song really sad, is that it contains parts of nearly every other song in the game, plus you knowing that the story will probably repeat itself. Dunno what happened in the other ending, but I remember that both were of the bitter-sweet sort.

All Kingdom Hearts flavours - Dearly Beloved
Just leave this, as it is. So many memories.~

There are many, many more, I can't think of at the moment.
However, I won't try to remember now, so other people can also post something. :P

Dearly Beloved, I wouldn't call it depressing, it makes me smile every time I hear it, specially the 3D version. I remember getting that game for my last birthday, seeing the title screen appear, that familiar tune playing once again, and then that more upbeat part starts. I was so fucking happy that I almost felt a bit embarrased in front of my girlfriend, with a big smile like a little child just by hearing that, no game makes me feel as happy as Kingdom Hearts when I play it.

Nah, I would'nt call it depressing either. :P
But it has a bit sad feeling to it for me, maybe it's just the nostalgia that fools me, because I now automatically connect it to this song.
I can say, this game series is really a part of my childhood and youth(that is still ongoing).
It may sound awkward, but I have a good, long year friend I've made thanks to this game, just because we noticed that each other likes the game and started a conversation over it. :D
Looking forward to the 3rd main game, which was announced on E3, even if I won't play it.
(Not going to buy a console just for 1-2 games, haha, maybe when PS5 is out x) )

The whole Neotokyo soundtrack by Ed Harrison. Though not solely depressing, it has a very grim, chilly feel to the entire thing. I cannot sing the praises of this soundtrack highly enough. It sounds strange to begin with, but it fits the theme of the game/setting perfectly, and very quickly grows on you once you get past its quirkiness. The game is inspired by (and based in) the same world as Ghost In The Shell, a future echo of the east where large corporations dominate the political landscape and cybertech has advanced substantially.

Though the soundtrack doesn't feature into the game itself, as more of an external component in the same way that the Homestuck soundtracks only really have limited place in the actual strip, it still left a pretty big impact on me.
