I tried to launch Thief, there was an error and after i restarted steam to try and launch it again.
The weird thing is instead of having the button "play" i have the "install" one instead, i went to check my steam folder and the game is still there (thief folder is 24GB) but i just can't launch the game, an other game has this problem Payday2, the game is still installed on my computer but i have the "install" button instead of the "play" one as well.

I thought my HDD was dead but i can still use other files on it (music), i launched an other game (Besiege) from steam that's installed on the same HDD and it works fine.....

I can't delete the games from Steam as well since he believes they're not installed, so if I have to uninstall the game i would have to do it manually....

Do you guys already ran into this problem? What might've caused it? How to solve it? (worst case scenario, how to i manually delete the games safely? Do they have an uninstall file or i just delete the files?) And if i have to maually delete the files where are my games save (I wouldn't want to delete these after spending so much time on these games especially payday2???

Thanks.

What's your OS? I think in windows you can uninstall the game using the control panel..

Windows yes, but if i uninstall this way wouldn't it delete the save files as well? I usually use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall program, but it's so good at cleaning that i'm worried about the saves.....

I think your progress is your save? Since you can restart it in the options. Not 100% sure tho.

Usually uninstalling games will not remove game settings nor save games. Better to back them up to be sure though.

Most games are automatically back up their saved games to the steam cloud these days, letting you play a game om ,multiple devices if you like. and ensuring if you have to re-install you should have your saved games.

Uninstalling through the control panel just sends a request to Steam, to delete the game and clean the registry (so the game doesn't stay in "control panel"), so I would assume that it wouldn't do anything, because Steam thinks that games is already uninstalled (or will just clear the registry, so it isn't listed on remove program list).

what options does it give you if you right click the game, in properties can you check game cashe? or try launching the game via the .exe in the install folder.

Everything is greyed on properties. But after i tried launching Thief the first time the error appeared and before restarting Steam I verified the game file, they all validated succesfully, but once i restarted Steam i could only install it.

If i try to launch the .exe files from both games it opens the steam window to install games....

The weird thing being it happens to both games on the same day.... Today Payday update wasn't updating, i didn't pay much attention to it, being payday2.

Okay, i tried uninstalling from the Control Panel on Windows, it says it uninstall the games, the disapeared from my list of programs but when checking the files on my HDD (comp > E> program files > Steamlibrary > Steamapps > Common) they're both still here. Also payday 2 is like 84GB O_O

Check the payday 2 folder, it shouldn't be that large (it should be something around 17GB).

You could try deleting everything from your steamfolder except for the steam.exe and Steamapps, that forces it to refresh stuff, but your case sounds pretty screwed up, so I have no idea if this will help...

EDIT: Oh, you are currently playing thief, so it seems you managed to fix it...

Yeah, i cleared enough space on the HD to relaunch the install ( i didn't delete anything), it started like usual allocating space for the game, but after a short while it was " Recovering Thief files on computer", after 5 mins it finished and i was able to launch the game again..... Pretty weird actually, now i hope i won't have to make 80GB available just for being able to launch the recovery process for Payday :S

Just backup the saves(just in case), if there are any, steam sometimes "forgets" you have the game installed, and the game files are still on the folder, if you hit install, it should detect the files and skip the files you already have.

Yep that's what i did, just "installed" the game and everything was fine. It's just weird that it happens on 2 games in one day.

Same thing happened with me for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon..
I uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times.. Still that game won't start up.

Did the game start up before? My problem was steam didn't recognize my games were installed.
If that's the same problem, hit install when it's already installed and he'll recognize the files i guess.
But if the games never started on your comp, maybe it's something with the computer? Make sure you have the minimum requirements, once it's installed, try to validate the local files, update your drivers, check if your antivirus isn't blocking the game or something.

Did you tried just installing game without deleting anything? If files are fine steam should just check them and mark game as installed. Also, save files for Payday 2 are kept in: "C:\Users\'Your username'\AppData\Local\Payday 2\saves", to the Thief I won't help You, just because I don't have it installed, nor I had been playing it.

Thanks after reading your 2 messages i just re-install Payday2 now. I backed-up the save since i know where to find it now.
Also you're right the file isn't that big, it's 18 sth GB. I don't know which file property i was looking at when i tried to see the space taken by Payday, probably the all steam folder?
Thanks a lot :)

It happened to me before, with 10 games at once, turns out they were updating and I powered off the computer without properly closing Steam, so it couldn't write to the corresponding app_manifest[app_ID].acf, leaving it corrupted (0 bytes), reinstalling the game fixes this because Steam discover the files and speeds up the process by doing so, you will notice that every "vanished" game will need an update.

So far that's the 2 only games i found out about and payday needs a 11.4GB update now -_-'

That might be the reason, i had a payday update this morning that wasn't downloading, so i just restarted steam once and the computer. Usually the computer restart after closing all programs, so it should've close steam before restarting but knows....
