Thanks. No, it's just one of a few mandatory exams (alongside with foreign language and specialty exam) which is needed to complete PhD for ANY specialty. I see the point of your question and partly agree that it seems useless. Though I think people who specialize in philosophy go later for teachers or scientists in that field. Or (if talking about more practical cases) political scientists, sociological consultants or other similar experts.

I wouldn't have gone as far as to say "useless" since even the most mundane of acts eventually have some purpose in the long run.
My two cents worth of oddball philosophy right there. JK.
I'm not sure, if available here as a compulsory subject, I would have wanted to do it, given the high amounts of work and studying I had to do for my chosen modules, but it is an intriguing proposition if nothing else.

Don't remind me about an essay :) We needed to make an abstract. I was very lazy about it, in the end just translated something from wickipedia plus from sources mentioned there. Got 4/5 for it, but it doesn't really influence the final mark much. I think it would be much better if I picked virtual reality theme (becuase hype :D), but it got reserved right before me, so I picked Einstein's world view.
