• Jaysus swords (it adds tons of new weapons to the game)
• SkyUI (revamps the interface, as a PC player you must have it)
• achievethat (adds achievements that give rewards)
• Skyrim scaling stopper (removes the level scaling, it makes the game much harder at the beginning but you can also come across nice loot very early if you're lucky)
• purewaters (make the water much more beautiful)
• Zt followers (adds female followers)
• the dance of death (lets you customize how ofter killmoves occur)

This is graphics mods that does not affect performance in any way,i only got 1 fps drop from instaling them all.If you have more powerfull machine you can try Skyrim HD and some ENB mod,to make it look amasing.
Other mods like armors,wepons,followers,whatever are up to you.

Best look up S.T.E.P. and G.E.M.S.

I only use this for now.

Ive lost more hours chosing, installing, test driving and unninstalling mods then playing skyrim (except when it launched, wich were hours straight).

I somehow got my game stable with 223 mods, one mod can make your game go nanners, make sure to use Loot. I used this for the texture mods, seems to be working real nice, pretty good texture combination mod predone. 99% of my mods are from the Steam Workshop for ease of reinstallation.

Runs at a stable 40fps with no slow down on a 750ti/AMD 945/8gb Ram. Most can be googled by the names here, I really recommend ACE, Falskaar, and most of the spell/weapon/armor mods, also look into top rated quest mods, those are the categories that enchance the game for me, also an AI mod can't hurt. Make sure to use SKSE and SkyUI. Imaginator is also nice if you want to go the non ENB route(personally I prefer Imaginator).

Good luck, if your first go at modding it doesn't go well try again, took me like 4 different times to get everything stable, hours of work, pretty nice now...

Do this also, quick and easy, solves some issues with mods and the main game messing up

PROTIP #1: Don't use the messy Steam Workshop.
PROTIP #2: Use LOOT to sort you load order.
