'ello forums ^.^ I've pursued since long ago, a game that has at least these traits:

  • Sandbox environment, or a very large map.
  • Survival aspects.
  • RPG-ish elements.
  • Decent, three dimensional graphics.
  • Ability to build, create, edit or place structures.

Minecraft won't do. It's just too... blocky. Sheesh. Having played it for long enough I grew bored. So, I've searched for a game where you have to survive in a random environment, where you can have your own sort of... house/base (being able to fully build or create one would be above the expected), where there's at least a few RPG elements, and, that has DECENT graphics (Three dimensional space can be traversed. XYZ?)

If any of you knew anything similar available for Steam... it'd be... amazing >:D

Sounds like you pretty much described Don't Starve (well except for the 3 dimensional thing, but honestly, I'd say it isn't anywhere near important for a survival game). While you can't "build a house" in the sense of it, you pretty much have to settle somewhere and make a base to have any chance. It's map is decently big, you're likely to get killed before you manage to explore it entirely unless you're really good. :P

The Mount and Blade games. It is sandboxgames, You have to survive and you are following i story kind of like RPG. You have your own character, which you can upgrade. 3 dimensional graphics, but not that good. You can edit your own buildings.

Since when can you design your own buildings in Mount & Blade?

Hey again!
I didn't say that you can design your own buildings, but you can conquer Castles, cities and towns, which you can customize a little. :) Mount and Blade Warband is funnier though, in which the following things is changed:
Desert landscape
Extra faction based on Arabic Culture
Marriage
Improved Dialogue
Modified Combat system to make battle more deadly
Changed the map to look slightly more realistic
compared to the original Mount and Blade.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. So, in the first game you can't modify your guns without mods but since Clear Sky these options are up. Open world, artifacts, rare ammunition, factions at war. And surviving in the Zone - that's the fundament of gameplay

Its a good game but doesnt have a real survival aspect to it there is no food or needs, no place to set up a place called home and its very scripted, still waiting for a stalker or metro 2033 (not last light) real survival, food water base ammo ect.

Autumn Aurora 2 mod for Shadow of Chernobyl
Misery 2.1 mod for Call of Pripyat

Both of these add survival elements (eat, sleep, etc) to the game.
Currently replaying Shadow of Chernobyl with AA2 and its a pretty damn awesome mod.

Cube World maybe? You can't build for now - it's alpha - but you will be able to.

Space Engineers - there will be survival mode in the future, you can get resources and build working space stations, spaceships and battle. There will be multiplayer too.

Kenshi, but it's still in development and I don't know how many of your requirements is true to it, since I only briefly tried it when it wasn't on Steam yet. Decent graphics is there though. Kinda looks like Mount & Blade with a samurai/feudal Japan setting.

The Sims ofcourse

  • Sandbox environment, or a very large map. Check!(maps are large enough to irritate you when you run from one side to the other)
  • Survival aspects. Check!(Try not to kill your sim :p )
  • RPG-ish elements. Check! (Many "classes" to choose from, buy items in stores, steal them, or create them, level up your skills, kill stuff(mainly mummies))
  • Decent, three dimensional graphics. Check! (At least compared to Minecraft and stuff)
  • Ability to build, create, edit or place structures. Check!

There are plenty of mods to make things even better.
Imho The Sims would've been the best game ever if it had like random dungeons and quests that made you kill stuff.

I think with the 3D requirement you're really limiting yourself. Under the Ocean looks really cool, though I've yet to play it, but that's a sidescroller and Terraria is supposed to be really good too. Don't Starve is supposed to be really fun too, but that's top-down graphics. ALl of those games still have nice graphics though. Vox looks pretty cool too and that one is 3D.

Terraria is AMAZING and if OP is willing to try a non-3D I really think they would like it (:

Dead Island pretty much matches your needs.

It has a pretty big map with several different areas (jungle, city etc.)
It is a survival game.
Although not sufficient, it has rpg elements (character backgrounds, unique abilities, leveling up etc.)
Decent graphics definitely.
Although you can't build places, you can still craft weapons and bullets.

You should give it a try. Co-op mode is especially fun to play ;)

Why, thank you!

I just did not bother to read all the other posts and just decided to throw my 2 cents in whether or not someone else had mentioned the awesomeness that is Wasteland 2.

Another option is the game "Roller Coaster Tycoon 3" It has:

  • Okay 3d graphics in terms of the release date in 2004.
  • Open sandbox environment,
  • You can build your own structures, roller coasters and roads ex.

Minecraft fits what you want exactly. Get over the "blocky" feel. There are SOOOO many mods and texture packs that change the game IMMENSELY.

Other than that, if you can get past the 3D requirement and can deal with 2D, I suggest Terraria and Starbound.
