Source and how to prevent

And if it's about to force your "upgrade", folow these steps

This is utter BS tho, lots of my games don't even support W10.

Looks to be pretty unethical update by MS.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/3042155/microsoft-windows/windows-patch-kb-3139929-when-a-security-update-is-not-a-security-update.html

So potentially I may lose Media centre regardless of wether I want to keep it or not. I wonder if I keep the updates turned off for a few more months the free upgrade will expire and MS won't bug me about updating anymore...

I believe I've always been set to "Check for updates but let me choose what/when to install" or something of that nature. I better check again next time I'm at my computer. I really don't want Windows 10. Thank you for the update. :)

And this is why I turned off windows 7 auto update features and why I hate that there are issues turning off the windows 10 auto update.

I NEVER let any of my software auto update if I can help it. In fact I wish steam would stop doing the auto updates to stuff. Let me decide when/if I want to update something cause your new update might cause lots of issues with my system and I want to know that before I update.

+1 I am with you on the Steam thing,i should decide when i want to update games,Steam client itself i can see but at least let me chose a time that is good for me,since i have a cap but a free zone with unlimited download with no cap.

Online games needing an update to play i get,but single play what does it matter which version i want to play?Even ones with online, they could just check which version and tell me i have to update before i can go online.

And i also agree i wish it was easier to deal with Windows 10 updates, but to be honest i am just happy i can schedule on my own terms, and i can kind of see why they make it hard to fully turn off updates.Seeing how a lot attacks on pc come from exploits because windows has not been updated to patch and so on.

In the end i guess there is no happy medium, same with Steam,if people would quit being stupid and getting scammed and scummy people would not use Steam to pawn off stolen goods we would not have all these trad delays and so forth,I sometimes wish they would just do away with trading all together and ditch this stupid mobile crap and so on.

As i recall last time there was a big deal about them forcing updates it turned out to not be true,i think people just look for reasons to complain and hate on Microsoft the same way they do for Ubi and EA.

Speaking of which i remember when there was a big deal about sniffing out your files for pirated software and then disabling said stuff based on bad info and people where running around claiming they where scanning all your files and so on.As it turns out it was only going to be for Microsoft products which they have every right tot take take steps to protect.

Also this was claimed to have been done before,so if they where doing it before, why did that stop just to start over again?

Look i am not saying i am for Microsoft but i also do not get my tin foil hat on every time one little thing pops up about Windows and how evil it is.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3029613/microsoft-windows/new-details-emerge-about-forced-windows-10-upgrade-and-how-to-block-it.html

It seems to me from that and other articles i have read that they are just pushing more to upgrade but not forcing anyone, again like i said earlier if they really wanted to force you why offer the option to roll back to older Windows with the free upgrade?Kind of counter productive do you not think? Also last time this was brought up,windows 10 was install on your pc but was never upgraded for you,it was to be ready for when or if you wanted to upgrade. And was to help seed to others who where downloading the upgrade, and that being on by default i found was a bit of a shady move.

I hate that i have to use Windows to play most of my games.I do love games and i would glad switch full on to Linux if more games where supported and well video cards had better support for that matte.I just deal with it.I think Windows 10 is the best version since 7 when it comes to function and use and it is faster to boot and takes up less resources so more ram and such for my games.

My old computer was rated as not upgradable. Ran the tool and it said that my Win7 PC was not capable of running 10... then 3 hours later it was suddenly on the greenlist and begging me to reserve my copy. Don't get too comfortable with not getting the clearance, as they may just be hiding from you while it's being background downloaded.

I think you had to ensure certain system updates were installed before it would offer to perform the upgrade. Two specific ones, and then an actual installer update. When in doubt, manually check for pending / outstanding updates. I think the Win10 one comes under the 'optional' section, along with driver updates for your graphics card (at least, it does that with Nvidia)

You're a lifesaver, OP. I don't have autoupdates, but I tend to just hit "install" doing very little research in advance out of years of habit. GWX Control Panel installed, 10 blocked, OP whitelisted.

Uninstalling the specific "Win 10-pushing" updates and putting the update settings to "Search for updates but let me choose when/if to download and install them" [It might not say exactly that in english, i just quickly translated what it says in swedish], and also hiding the culprit updates seems to have fixed it, i don't even get the "GWX"-thingie in the "activity bar".

Now just to wait and see if this was enough, or if i will have to use third-party software and/or manual registry edits to stop MS from pushing W10 on me....oh, and to check what the hell each update actually does before installing them.

This "Google/Apple-esque" agenda that MS have started doing [semi-]recently is completely uneeded (as i would assume those who want W10 would find out pretty quickly if they are applicable for a free upgrade, or would have upgraded the first time the "GWX" thing showed up, while i would assume that most people who want to countinue to use their Win7/8.1 OS [i'm perfectly fine with Win 8.1], or for some other reason don't want to upgrade are more likely to just get frustrated rather than being "bullied" into installing Windows 10).

Unless they want to access extra information about their users and/or force people to use some future[?] system where one, for example, could only run software approved by MS (or even only FROM MS) or some other monetary shenanigans, i can't find or come up with any single reason to use the tricks and tactics they are employing in their quest to force people who do not want/need to upgrade to do so.

This is BS'ery you'd expect from the NSA (or similar), possibly from Google (or maybe even Apple), but not from MS. This is a new low.
Let me keep my perfectly satisfactory Windows 8.1 OS, on a computer i bought about a year or so ago (i mean, upgrade to a new OS already, dafuq?), and don't friggin' try to force me to install a new OS, i will eventually have to do that anyway (probably), because of software compabilities and whatnot, but when that time comes, hopefully most early-day quirks and "old" software problems will be solved, or at least more so.

TL:DR: MS is either going full big brother (info gathering, control of usage a.s.o.), or they are deliberately trying to look bad, because i don't really think they are stupid enough to push such an uneeded and vile agenda for no reason at all.

Ask people who are viable for a free upgrade if they want to, but don't nag about it or try to force it if the user ever realizes their answer is "no".
I would guess most people would upgrade eventually anyway (software compabilities and such), at least when/if the newer OS being aviable is a good product that is worth the hassle.

PS. Son of a....witch, while i am not a "MS fanboi", i've always defended them as being one of the lesser evils, and i usually don't get THIS worked up about things (at least not often enough to write a wall of text about it), but this is just...bloody 'ell!

Per this MS support article, Windows 7 Mainstream Support ended on 2015.01.13. Extended Support for Windows 7 SP1, which includes all security updates, will continue until 2020.01.14. Hotfixes for non security issues are now fee-based.

Windows 8.1 support is not ending soon. As per the Windows Lifecycle Fact Sheet, Mainstream support and updates will continue until 2018.01.09, and following that, free Extended Support will continue five more years until 2023.01.10.

The updates that allow the "automatic update" to Windows 10 have been around for months. They are only installed automatically if you're not in the habit of looking up Windows updates and reading what they do before installing them. If you're not, you should be.

I updated to W10 last december. Had lots of problems. My computer would freeze every single day and take like an hour just to open anything. Had to force restart several times until it worked normally. I hated W10 because of this BS. Used it for like 2 weeks and installed W7 back. Will be really mad if they force W10 on me. It's my choice and I don't f**king want it. Everybody that had W10 update forced on them should sue Microsoft!

Haha... What? I mean, I have W 8.1 and it keeps on ASKING me to do it, so I've been pushing it aside. I honestly just don't like the rumours(truths?) that they can go into your computer whenever and screw with your computer, and used "piracy" as a front for it. Yeah, fuck you. That's simply putting your nose into another's business. Ah, well. Maybe I can scare them off by constantly playing midget porn in the background or something.

EDIT: This is the window I get on every startup :
