We've all seen the Steamgifts Steam groups started with the best intentions turn into zombie villages quickly. Instead of a lively community with discussions, activities and making friends, the only element left was the occasional giveaway.

This is not least because Steam and Steam chat aren't necessarily the platforms to keep in touch and get to know each other.

I'm starting the SG Slacker experiment now to see if Slack is better suitable for a group focusing on the community aspects such as getting to know each other and having fun together with group events etc.

Slack bills itself as a messaging app for teams that is on a mission to make their working life simpler, more pleasant, and more productive. We'll abuse that for our Steamgifts requirements by structuring the group around our needs. There's even a mobile app to stay in touch with the group while on the run.

The SG Slacker community will start with channels around

  • #intro - this is the place to get to know each other as persons
  • #gotd - Game of the Day, share your stories about that game
  • #letsplay - hook up with friends to play something
  • #giveaways - random private GAs and key drops

We can develop this further with more channels, bots, anything really!

We're startig the ALPHA testing phase now with a small group of about 20 people who are experienced community members on Steamgifts, and ideally with experience in Slack. Tell me why you want to be part of this experiment and what you would contribute, and message me on Steam or to my email <nickname>@gmail.com to get an invite. Post below in the comments if you'd like to be considered for the BETA or release later, and enter the obligatory GA. After all the aim is to get rid of PUGs and to hang out with friends :)

TL;DR: Post below in the comments if you'd like to be considered for the BETA or release later, and enter the obligatory GA.

The last time I tried Slack I didn't really like it, but it seems like everyone else is using it nowadays. O:

I've never heard about it before either. I just watched the video on their website that "explains" what it's supposed to be about, but either they suck at explaining or I am stupid.

I did use Slack for work in the past, BUT I don't think it would be such a great idea for SG.

First of all - Slack as well as other plaqtforms like this works perfect for communities or projects that don't have any other good means for organized communication - but on SG we have those. Not to mention the chat, which ok - is hit and miss, sometimes you're lucky to enter nice conversation and sometimes it's either zombie-fest or spam-fest, but we have massive forums that is easilly accessible to any member of the community.
Secondly - it's unnecessary fragmenting the community. The more platforms avaiable there are the more time, effort and attention it does take to cover them all. As it is now any active member is already supposed to visit forums regularly, visit chat if he likes chatting, follow his active Steam groups. Each new platform requires more time, takes this time from attending already existing platforms meaning less content appearing at these platforms as well, because if people need time for other platform and they only have this much free time. And then imagine what's next - should we make official FB page for SG? Even better - let's also make official FB group. And then official Twitter page. And then make our own Subreddit.... What's the point really, if the same content can be shared right here at the page itself, making it easier to spot and participate in for whole userbase.

Thanks for sharing zelgh, appreciate it! Regarding...

Point is that the forum here and the discusions & chat in Steam aren't perfect, and Slack might just scratch the itch that some folks have who are interested in a more community oriented group instead of just the GAs, and the never-ending noise of the forum and S.Gifts chat channel.

I don't know if it'll work, that's why it's an experiment in alpha stage and not full fledged thing! Let me know if you're interested in trying to make it work...

sing me up for beta phase ;) but again - while we cannot change steam itself, we can propose solutions to make forums better and I personally believe that should be the course of action - no outside tool will never have as much exposure among userbase as forums which are already incorporated to the site itself ;) So maybe instead of reinventing the wheel we should try to make the wheel we already have just be more round? ;p For example I believe that a simple sorting topics in forums by not only date posted by also date created (to easy spot newer but less popular threads) would work wonders ;p
