I thinking of expanding my stable of alts today but does anyone know someone who has the most alt accounts JUST for tf2 idling? I started copying my tf2 alt folders to my secondary hard drive totaling at 64 soon.

I'd like to get an idea of how I compare in number of alts with others.

Best response in 5 hours gets either a spare key or spare backpack expander I have depending on the response.

Note: I have no idea what steampipe is.

Most of the people I have met who idle only have a few accounts, so compared to I think you have a good amount. I think I heard of somebody with 100-200 accounts or something like that, let me see what I can find.

I have 70 accounts, I run 10 of them per night. I'm surprised you're using a secondary hard drive for yours, are you symbolic linking? Those 70 accounts I have only take up 30.2 gb in space, since I just link to my primary account's Steamapps folder.

Something strange happened this week though, every one of my accounts needed to be reverified with Steamguard, so that was a bit annoying. I'm not sure if thats linked to the steam client update that happened earlier. I've heard of people with well over 150 accounts, some people use dedicated rigs just to idle 24/7. With 32 GB of fast RAM, I'm sure you could probably easily idle 20 accounts at a time, so 40 accounts per day, 280 accounts per week just on one PC? The only limit is how dedicated you are to it I guess. It earns me a decent amount of extra cash each week to fund my Steam spending habits so I'm happy enough with 70 while still being able to use my rig when I need it.

I tried 18 accounts with 8Gb Ram without any problem, with 32 Gb you can do a lot more :)

I'm sure, I haven't set up a dedicated server for my accounts to connect to, so each one takes up considerably more RAM as a result. Perhaps one day if I feel like expanding the number of alts I have, I'll consider changing everything over, especially with the Steampipe update, but right now I can't be bothered to optimize my 70 accounts lol

Well don't know your setup but you just need 1 account as server (add +sv_password 1234) and the other as clients (add +password 1234 +connect your ip) If sometime you want to change it :)

Is it really so profitable/worth it? What numbers are we talking about (1/5/10/100$ per week)? You probably had to spend 5$ to be able to trade the items. Sorry if this sounds wierd, I'm just curious.

For each account, I add $5 of Steam Wallet. I buy an in-game item worth 99 cents that I sell on the community market for roughly 80-83 cents after fees. I'm left with $4.01 steam wallet on that alt account, which I use if theres a game or DLC on sale that I want that's less than $4.01. Alternatively, I can also transfer the money back to my main account by selling myself a Dota2 or a useless crate. Yes, I invest $5 into each account, but I retain roughly $4.80 in usable Steam Wallet after making that account premium, so I like to think of it as each account only costing me 20 cents to make premium since it's not like I've suddenly ran out of stuff to buy on Steam. You get 8-12 drops per week, with a chance at rarer items that are worth more. Even if I never get rare drops (hats/miscs/paints/tags/salvaged crates) I make back that 20 cents with 1 weeks worth of idling.

My desktop PC is on all night regardless of whether I idle or not. Yes, it consumes more power since it's uses up more system resources than if I weren't running 10 TF2's but not by that much LOL

Thats not fair with idling on multiple accounts, you should feel bad.
Not mentioning idling is also not fair, you should play the game and get items for it.

«Your account has been flagged for circumventing the item distribution system. We have removed the items that were illegally obtained. Future violations will result in the loss of all your items». This is the description of a TF2 item, and it seems related to this kind of exploiting.

I heard of people using near 250 alts. There shouldn't be that many who do so though, considering all the logistics behind idling 11h per week for each account.

Setup sandbox premium with tf2idle gui program. Run dedictated tf2 server, have 32 or 16 accounts join that server, giving you 199-204mb ram per accounts. +connect ip:29000 -port20. Have over 112 premium + 16 f2p accounts, I usually idle 32 or 16 account per day with 16gb ram. On sandbox setting just set all accounts to 1 alt steam folder with tf2 folder, that all you need, gotta love steampipe.

Since the SteamPipe update you don't need to copy dirs, just use the same in sandboxie for every account.

Well I have 2 folders, one for my main account and the other with a steamapps symlinked that I use in sandboxie, so I don't have to enter my main account details everytime after idling. I learned that the hard way too :p

You still need separate steam folders to run simultaneously. Copy everything in the steam folder except steamapps. Use a sym link for that.

Holy... I have three alts, but rarely run more than two at a time. These days, I don't even bother with one though. I should, but I feel like I have better things to do with my processing power (and I always feel like I shouldn't run other games while idling and I hate having that feeling, whether I'm actually going to run anything else or not.)

Wait, does steam allow several instances of itself running at the same time? Or do you use some external software?

To be honest this is exploiting imho and I hope that steam will make a definite statement to either allow it or forbid it, hopefully forbid it. (They might have done that already but to me it seemed like they had not)

Is idling a PC all night worth the items you get? I mean, the power cost and component wear on the machine must outweigh the near-worthless drops in TF2 right?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most people don't think long term consequences of doing something. I mean, if you don't play any games at all on a PC, it will survive longer right? So why play resource intensive games at all?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But this isn't playing games, this is idling for items/profit. What I'm saying is that the resources used to make the profit may cause you to break even.

Playing games is different, that is entertainment so it has a different value.

Running the game in textmode doesn't require much power to be honest, yeah sure if you have 10 up at once that might be something, but I doubt it's as "power-hungry" as a new AAA release maxed out on some seriously stupidly high resolution

I use this with 4ish accounts, works great, and integrates with Sandboxie somewhat. Cuts down on file size too.

How does this work though? You have to buy the game or pay at least $9 in micropurchases before cards drop. Surely you're not going to make $9+ from 4 cards?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Who said anything about cards? It's item drops you want, as in weapons or hats or whatever, and then you turn that into metal, and then you turn metal into keys, and then you can buy stuff with those keys, or sell them for money, or do whatever floats your boat.

well I have only 8 alt accounts. 5 accounts are premium and 3 accounts are free to play (because most of the salvage crates drop on f2p accounts). well I suggest you all upgrade to premium your accounts using QIWI (only for russian users), because buying the upgrade to premium from valve store or from any trading site is costly.
