Personally I always had better luck with Nvidia and like the drivers better among other things(Updates for games seem to come quicker), I have used AMD in the past, had driver issues and they just didn't feel as stable to me, many people feel the opposite, if you do go Nvidia wait for the 800 series, it should be dropping soon and 300 would get you something rather good, not sure what AMD is up to with releases, maybe someone else here can chime in....
Yes though AMD usually gives you more performance for the money(Not a deal breaker for me, some it is...), besides that its down to preference....They are not called ATI anymore if I recall, AMD bought them and everything is AMD now I think....not totally sure...

No problem, just remember every company makes duds and sometimes it actually comes down to the branding and not AMD vs Nvidia also, like personally I like EVGA best for Nvidia, I am sure some people have issues with cards because of poor fans or bad cooling.
Good luck.

Yes, i was looking at an EVGA gtx 750 ti, and comparing it with a Gigabyte gtx 660. Normally, I would go for the newer one (GTX 750 ti in this case), but the gtx 660 seems much better in almost every aspect. Without considering the money factor: what would you suggest?
Comment has been collapsed.
I thought it was basically even? Am I wrong? Might have misread some benchmarks....idk. Also consumes much less power, think it maxes at 50w, saves on bills a tiny bit. But he has 300, he should wait for a 960 or AMD equivalent...
Comment has been collapsed.
Think they are about the same, gonna guess 750ti will get a tad more support, you should wait for the 950ti or 960 honestly if you can, if you need something now and want Nvidia go with the 760 I say in that budget range....

i use nvidia since i was born :P yes i can confirm ati have better performance but the lifespan is much lower and always take videocards with active cooling like fan or water cooling and if u know what to buy not just about cipsets and price a nvidia 500 can be much better that 600 one if u dont read specs right
Comment has been collapsed.
No matter which one you choose, it should work no problem. I personally like AMD more just because Nvidia has in the past, released drivers that have killed video cards/computers, also because the cost/performance ratio is better.
What ever card you eventually go with from what ever maker you go with, I would suggest go with dual or triple fans because generally they will be quieter and keep your video card cooler.
Pretty much any of the cards here would be good.

Just a note though, AMD is coming out soon with the 300 series of cards, so the prices of the 200 series should drop some once those are out. Not sure when its coming though.

I always considered buying AMD because of the price-performance, but it depends on every card really, I bought 1 year ago the Radeon HD 7950 because for the same price I could get the GTX 660 ti, which wasn't really better, so I decided to go with AMD. Obviously some games are more optimized for one or another brand, but not all.
But you should buy a GPU considered by best for the price, not because it's AMD or Nvidia, basically you don't have to be a fan boy when buying GPUs.

I've had a good experience with both during the years. My last 2 GPUs have been AMD's, mostly because of the price/performance + good performance/power consumption (I didn't need any of the extra features NVidia offered at the time).
If I had to buy a card in the immediate future it would probably be NVidia's (probably the GTX960, assuming it will be a "doubled" 750), thanks to the efficiency of their new architecture.
I like to keep my system cool&quiet (I force a low and constant fan speed), so having good performance with a low power envelope is very important to me. :)
To sum it up:

I bought an hd 7790 from amd just 1 month ago because i found it at 100$ and it can run most games at full hd on high at a decent framerate.
If i had more money or if i had bought the gtx 750 at the moment is the best price/performace and performance/power consumption graphic card out there.
AMD is not better than Nvidia as Nvidia is not better than AMD both of them performe better on different games for EX:Watch Dogs/Metro last light runs better on nvidia cards because the produceres made the game so , alot of people that used amd cards were complaing that they can't run watch dogs even if their cards were very good.
Is your decision on which one you chose
Ps:I never used an Nvidia card but they all seem good and i hope i will get next year the gtx 750 ti
Edit:And always remember to look up for special editions of cards Ex:dual-X oc or GDDR% edition or OC edition etc.

Hate to hijack the thread, but while the subject is open...
Looking for a budget card for a PC. It's only a 3ghz AMD x2 with a 256mb Geforce 8600 graphics card. Not looking for it to be white hot, it actually plays most games, including FC3, at a decent setting. I'm looking for something with a HDMI and I'm torn between these two 'MSI GeForce GT 210 1GB' and 'XFX ATI Radeon HD 5450'.
I'm a fan of Nvidia myself, but the Radeon seems to have better clock speeds. The PC is mostly used for media but, as mentioned, it will run the occasional game. Anyone got any sage advice they can give??
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, not looking to upgrade the PC as it isn't the one used for gaming on a regular basis. I have 3 PCs, two for gaming and one for media. The graphics card I'm looking for just has to have HDMI, but it would be nice to get the best one out of the two.

Gotta agree, I got the king arthur edition ATI radeon 5450, overclocked it to the max it could go, I took out the fan and used it to cool my room, it overheated and completely shut down 6 times over the past years, still works fine even though i out intense damage on it. I installed a heatsink on it after i took out the fan, and the heatsink it now pretty much a goop of plastic because the temps go so high on it. The temp on it when playing games is around 110-130+ deg. Celcuis. So it's a pretty damn extreme card.

I am an AMD user but I'd go with nvidia if I had the money. My HD7870 is stable and runs without issues (well, it microstutters here and there, but Nvidia is no better). The problem is, their drivers eat a lot of cpu power. My cpu is already weak and it makes it even weaker.

I really don't know but... I have an amd and it was very good quality/price but this time i want to go for an nvidia because... physics thing, it's amazxing the things they made with this in borderlands 2 for example and enven tought there are little games with that i think is worth it , amd has alaso things like this but come on... tressfx... a hair simulator XD XD ... and most of the amd features are not locked to amd cards and come on ... mantle every where and the nvidia did a new dx11 driver for their cards and the perfomance was better than mantle :P

For $300, get an R9 280x.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125490
All the fanboyisms set aside, yes, AMD generally has a better price:performance. It's especially true with the uber-high-end stuff for a drastic showing, as the new Titan Z card which barely better performance is $3k, versus the R9 295x2 being within 5% of the performance (and better in some areas) for $1500.
Driver issues plague both sides at intervals, so really, anyone saying either side is worse than the other most of the time is suffering from various cognitive biases (namely confirmation bias as they say it, and then seek out the proof that supports it without paying attention to that which contradicts them - we all do it).
So, just go with the best thing you can in your price range. And right now there's no question, stat for stat and by benchmarks, that the R9 280 and 280x are the leaders in the $250-350 range. You can get into a GTX770 2GB version at the same price point as the best of the R9 280x 3GB versions, but it won't perform as well.

To be honmest it all bpils down to the AAA games you want to play, most performance issues specific to 1 brand comes with this games, indies or other games generally perform the same, unless there is one specific issue but generally is fixed. On the other hand AAA publishers seems to "conveniently" forget to fix one of the brands (the engine which Rage and the new wolfestein runs performs like ccrap with AMD and i know there are similar cases with other games on Nvidia). So the question is, what do you want to play in the AAA range and look for the publisher history with each brand, because in reality both GPU makers are apparently incompetent to develop drivers and no raw power can fix it. Or their are not incompetent are they do it on purpose to share the market, or they put money to the game developers to create issues, you name it, the fact is, choose your shiny gimmick and prepare to be screwed.

If you don't care about things like power consumption and heat generation, go for AMD. Absolutely better price/performance ratio.
As others have posted, with that budget I'd get a 280x.

Nvidia, i had always use nvidia, but now i have my first ati and it is giving me sooooo much problems...

$300?
If you don't want to wait get a GTX 770.
Performs better than a 280X at 1080p, while the 280X has the upper hand at bigger resolutions due to it's VRAM.
AMD's drivers have been fine for a long time, there's nothing wrong with them anymore.
I'd wait until the Nvidia announces their 900 series though for the price drops.

Generalizations like this really are crappy. I have no problem with flash apps, never had. And it really really isn't up to the drivers to interact with flash apps.

I am (was) in the same boat as you. My GTX 660, in my opinion, is not cutting it anymore. I had a 300 dollar cap like you do now, and I wanted to TRULY upgrade to a new card, not just bump up the the resolution a bit for games. With that in mind, I knew I couldnt go for a GTX 770, GTX 780, GTX 780ti card, unless maybe I was willing to sell off my GTX 660 first before I made the purchase, but that small/huge gap without a card which would force me to not game for that amount of time was not an option. My interests then shifted to AMD where its very true that price/performance does fair better on the other side. For $260 (plus 6 dollars shipping) I found a Gigabyte R9 290 Windforce and I couldnt have been happier. It rivals and sometimes beats the GTX 780 in performance while only being half the cost! The only complaint about the R9 290 is that it gets ridiculously hot and we all know that heat kills electronics faster. This, however, really only affects the reference card, thats why I went with 3rd party manufacture known for excellent cooling. This is my story and I hope you can pick up a few answers to help your own questions. 3 tips you should look for: 1. Is your current power supply capable of running the card, or will you have to upgrade to a more powerful one. 2. What is the original card you are upgrading from, which should help you determine how much of a graphical boost you would want/need at a good value, when comparing AMD and Nvidia cards. 3 AMD cards run hotter than Nvidia cards so if you end up choosing an AMD card, will you be comfortable buying a non reference card for alittle more money, or buying a cheaper reference stock card and probably using a bit more cash for an after market cooler to help keep temperatures low while the card is on load. The world is yours, friend! I hope this information helps you enjoy it just a bit more =D

I hate € prices :/, I'd pay about 430 dollar for same card here.

I like the AMD Radeon R9 280 I put in my PC a couple of weeks back but I do notice a lot of games that are looking for Nvidia's PhysX hardware and it's a little frustrating being without it. Also, Nvidia's control panel is easier to figure out. AMD's is a bit fiddly.

I would go with AMD. Not cuz I'm fanboy or anything - you just can get better performance for lower price when it comes to graphics cards. Also - driver problems for AMD cards is a long gone problem. nVidia has bigger problems nowadays (for example, driver that overclocks your GPU automatically and it just burns from the heat). I have HD6670 myself (which is mid class card) and I've never had any problems with drivers. While one of my friends with GTX460 had problems with doing anything after certain driver update. I think the card didn't want to work with his i7 CPU (at that time there wasn't much better in graphics cards when he bought that one). So yeah - I would go with AMD.

This. Once in the past, I was an nvidia "fan", but now, I guess that ATI cards have a better cost/performance ratio. I'm planning to upgrade soon, so, what do you recommend? I have around u$s300 to spend in a graphics card. I've been doing my research, but I still haven't decided, so I wanted to hear your opinion. What would you recommend, and why? Which graphics card would you buy?
