Yo,

I just opened my Twitch-Launcher and... damn, I got atleast 150, most indie, games and I've never touched one of them.
So I checked my Epic-Launcher... and there I have like 20, pretty good looking, games.

That's why I wonder, did any of you ever started one of these games?

Have a good day.

Do you play the free games?

Yeah, but only the one from Twitch.
Yeah, but only the one from Epic.
Yeah, from both.
No.

No, because I have neither an Epic nor a Twitch account.

Didn't know twitch even had a launcher or sold games. I've played a few of the freebies from Epic though, a lot of them are actually damn good games and some are even on my Steam wishlist so I don't need to buy them now. I don't care much about cards or achievements so it's no big deal to me if I play something on Steam, Epic, GoG, or Origin.

I've definitely played the Jackbox that Epic had early on, though not for a while (for example, did they ever fix you don't know jack?) And a number of the Twitch ones like Framed and The Bridge, but those are shorter. I've definitely played a few that I can't name because I deleted them almost immediately because I knew I wouldn't. There are a number on both that were on my wishlist that I just haven't gotten around to yet because I am trying to actually finish a few games on Steam

Couple of games from the Epic Store, that I couldn't play/afford in Steam. Quite enjoyed The Wolf Among Us and Transistor and Edith Finch.

I haven't yet, because I still have games I want to finish first, which are higher on my backlog.

i tell myself that i will, though i never do. there are games i got for free on twitch/epic that i have on my steam wishlist, but in a couple instances, i've ended up buying the steam versions anyway. i think we all know that we just love steam and don't wanna cheat on it.. plus ya know, cloud saves and achievements. same goes with the xbox app. there's gotta be at least 10 games that i really wanna play on there but i keep holding off on laying down that measly $1 for game pass. i do feel kinda better about that though since at least you get achievements and it's tied to my xbox gamertag, even if i haven't owned an xbox for a few years.

No. I have collected them all even though I own 90%+ of them, in the hope that it costs a few cents to Epic. I think someone has since confirmed that they don't pay the devs per copy claimed, but rather a lump sum, so it was a rather fruitless exercise :)

I'm sure there will come a time when the free games are only for those that have spent money on their site, which I have no intention of ever doing.

After when they started to steal games to make exclusives I even deleted my Epic account I created years ago for Unreal Engine. So no.

I claim them all, and then file them into a spreadsheet so I don't trade for them by accident (as I've done twice already). But, to date, I've barely played any of it--just tried out Ruiner since it had been on my steam wishlist for years.

I've played SuperHOT on Epic, and got my brother to play Celeste on it while I was playing it on Steam.

So far, I played subnautica from epic, borrowed the dlc of pillars of eternity from twitch to steam and played banner saga from twitch.
What I need is a working twitch plugin for gog galaxy, and then I'm done.

I played Thimbleweed Park on EGS the day they gave it away and finished it in two sittings as well as Shadow Complex when it was free waaaay back when (IIRC their UT reboot was still in development at that point). I think I have yet to play a game I claimed from Twitch. I don't know why I don't use either client more because I own a bunch of appealing games there (i.e. Axiom Verge, Shadow Tactics, ...), but despite it not being much of a chore, using other clients just feels inconvenient to me.

In terms of percentage of games played vs. owned, at least, I played more on Epic and Twitch than on Steam. :)

Actually I'm currently playing almost only games from Epic recently, I barely open Steam anymore.
Epic is giving away a looot of amazing games, and still I don't get why an amazing game should be better on Steam or Epic or everywhere else.

I personally don't have an issue with Epic or exclusiveness, but yes it does suck if you want the game on your preferred gaming client and it's not the EGS. I so think it's really shitty is putting a game up for sale exclusive on another client after presale already went up on steam. I personally do play on the EGS sometimes, but mainly Dauntless which is free on the EGS or by using it's own client.

I do want to take a moment to address this however.. For those that are on some epic crusade to not support Epic Games or the devs that make their games exclusive or put their games for sale on the EGS, if you get the free game you are failing this crusade. While you may not be purchasing the game, Epic is paying the developers for each free copy. One of Epics biggest goals is to keep growing the amount of people creating Epic accounts as well as using their client, which happens if you get any game regardless of if you buy it or get it for free or if you don't play it. So by getting games, regardless if they are free or not you are failing this crusade and still are supporting them.

I don't think most people would see any point in punishing devs who put their games on EGS in addition to Steam, and since most of the free games are not exclusive to Epic (if any) I don't see any conflict with boycotting purchases through EGS and still claiming the free games. So the developer gets paid, not a bad thing in my book and it comes out of Epic's coffer.

I agree that the goal is to get you on their client, but as long as you aren't buying stuff from the store I don't see how you're really supporting Epic by claiming the free games (unless they're harvesting your data as some have said, which is another can of worms altogether). Also AFAIK for most of the free Epic games you can just add a shortcut in Steam or GOG or whatever and not even have to open their client.

That metric matters to people at Epic games as well as their investors. It's the same for Steam, Uplay and other clients as well.

Despite the freebies, EPIC or any other site don't have a chance of beating Steam unless they actually notice what makes Steam successful.

Steam is still dominating the market because:

1.Its launcher and website have dark background and white text. For any gaming related website or launcher it is pretty much understood.

  1. It sells games and offers discounts in local currencies. Most gamers don't want headache of calculating conversion fees while making a purchase. Discounts and freebies attract the buyers whereas local currencies and regional payment methods make them stay..
3.It has long list of games.
  2. It has option to wishlist and that of adding games into cart.
  3. Online gamers can chat and take snapshot,
  4. CTRL Clicking games launches a new window for the game title, Makes searches easier.
  5. Gamers have profile and reputation..

Your orthodox comment piqued my curiosity and I visited your Steam profile. It's almost amazing that you spend such amount of time on handful of games. Don't be a 'Kupamanduka' (frog in the well). I know boring is good. But exploring is better. Try new things, explore new worlds (or rediscover old ones--it is up to you). Monotony breeds insecurity.

Change is bound to happen. Some company will sooner or later overtake Steam. Maybe Steam and all other launchers will be unified into one. Or the gaming industry as we know it would cease to exist. Who knows? Have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_games

There was a time when we thought that era of Edison's bulb would never end. But now LED bulbs have replaced it .
I was just stating the factors which have so far been in favor of Steam just to see which company performs best if the grounds are leveled.
