So I finally decided to go for Max Payne 3. Bought it on Amazon, when I realized ...

...that I bought a standalone "PC Download" instead of "PC Download - Steam DRM".

Any chance of redeeming my copy on Steam? (I guess not, just making sure)
If not, does this "retail" version have Steam achievements? (I found different posts on teh internetz regarding my question and contradicting each other)

EDIT: Contacting their support with the request to exchange the stuff. Thanks for the tips.
Also hope they will not dig too deep to find out about my little secret (not being a US citizen :) )

FINAL EDIT: They apologized for not being able to exchange the product, they could only refund it - funny moment.
So problem is solved, thanks again. I wouldn't think of contacting the support by myself.

Just contact Amazon support and they should swap it for you if you haven't used it.

I started downloading, but haven't finished yet, serial key was not used either. I'll try the support then. Thanks for the tip.

I'll do that. Hope they will not be xenophobic (about me not being an US citizen :) )

Retail version can't be activated to Steam, and does not have Steam features, including achievements. But it has its own achievements system though (Rockstar Social Club).

If you haven't used the serial key and finished the download (I think Amazon can tell) then you can probably contact Amazon support (they're really good at what they do) and try to exchange. It's the same price, correct? Should be simple to exchange one for the other.

Yep, same prize. I stopped the download so I don't make things even worse.

Simple - sure. But possible - ?
Return/exchange of digital goods is not officially supported according to their site. I'll try and see.

At least they refunded it so you can buy it again.

If it were Steam support they will probably tell you to go F yourself like it happened to me.

Sure. That "funny moment" was irony, hope it was not confusing :)

Later I figured two scenarios where refunding would not be satisfactory solution of the problem:

  • if I had exactly $30 on my debit card, I would receive the refund long after the 50% sale was over
  • if it were a gift paid by somebody else, refunding would be an awkward solution at best
