Don't trade with them again (unless they never explicitly agreed to the trade in the first place). Also, if possible, try to buy those said things at the last moment, after the person in question agreed to trade and is waiting for your offer.

It was effectively the last moment. We freaking agreed to trade, then I bought the keys off SCM and waited a week for them to be tradable. Today he informs me that he traded it away. IN FEBRUARY.

Ah, I see. You can try to avoid it happening again by buying keys from traders. It might be slightly more expensive though (or not, depends). You ask them to have the key/gift/whatever ready and wait few mins, then trade for keys.

Well I think you would be right to leave a - rep ... you didn't get to trade but you did initiate the trade when he got you to buy the items.
BUT .. buying keys that are locked 7 days and to expect the trade to stay in the air for a week is really taking a chance.

I had similar problems: people ask me to reserve a gift for them until their keys become tradable, I wait a whole week (while refusing all the other offers on this gift) only to discover that they already bought the game from another trader, because they couldn't wait several hours for me to get online. Usually they don't even bother to explain me this, until I ask if they still want to trade. Sometimes they just unfriend me silently. So now I explicitly say that I have no guarantees the gift will be available later or that the price will stay the same. The reservation is only possible when they agree to pay part of the price immediately or leave some other collateral.
So I don't think that your case is worthy of -rep. You didn't lose anything, you can use the keys you bought later with another trader or another gift.
