+1 First thing that came to mind for me. F3 & FNV. Specially if you like to mod your games.

davidsparrow, i wouldn't recommend to use mods on Fallout: New Vegas. I lost my save game because of mods.

But Far Cry 2 is a terrible game, especially compared to Far Cry 3.

Not really. I liked it a lot. Aside from the annoying road blocks or patrols, I don't see any problem with it.

It isn't first-person, but Just Cause 2 has a massive playable map and a kickass multiplayer mod.

  • Tomb Raider 2013
  • Wolfenstein 2009
... these are games, not movies =)
  • Just Cause 2
  • Metro series - this one is linear
  • STALKER series - kinda like Metro but more outside and open world (and it's in Chernobyl, not Moscow)
  • Open-space exploration from a top-down 2D view, Space Pirates and Zombies
  • Gothic and Risen series are open world medieval awesomeness, I find the quests and dialogs alot more pleasing than TES ones... but note that Gothic 4 is bit more linear, kinda like Tomb Raider and Wolfenstein.
  • Bioshock series, linear... the first two I have mixed feelings about, I love the 3rd one though.
  • Red Faction: Guerrilla - open world total destruction !!!! XD Kinda like Just Cause 2 on mars but with destructable buildings (and jetpack, no extreme hooks tho :P)
  • Red Faction: Armaggeddon is linear though but it's ok, depends on the taste.
  • Red Faction (the first) is also awesome and has destructable walls and stuff, kinda old but it's fun, I never really played RF2.

Boiling Point: Road to Hell. Great game, extremely buggy at launch, but most bugs have been fixed in later patches. Still has some problems and it doesn't quite have the feel of a AAA title, but then again neither did Sleeping Dogs for example and I didn't hear too many people complaining. I'd say it's definitely worth a try if you're looking for a FarCry/TES experience. Too bad it's not available on Steam. I have the boxed version.

Similar to that you can try also Precursors or Xenus 2. All of them are eastern Europe games with great ideas, low budget and some bugs.

You mean high graphics open world games not confined to a city? Um, not really, those are pretty much the cream of the crop, everything else is older and shows it and annoys you with it.

Stuff is on the way though.
And I guess you could get a kick out of AC4 - Black Flag as well.
