Why are games which were free once completely banned from SG? I get that that would mess up the CV - but why can't we just give them away for "free", meaning 0P? Obviously they already get special treatment somewhere in the code, so why not make this special treatment to set the value for these games to zero instead of banning them?
I mainly give away bundle games that I already own or have no interest in, so there are quite some keys which either rot somewhere in my library or for which I have to go the extra mile to give them away otherwise.

+1. In addition, no one wants their GA list spammed up with shitty 0p games that the devs give away because they can't sell them ;)

That's exactly what the blacklist is for. Especially as there are mostly only 1-2 games at the same time that are given away for free - just blacklist them and nobody "spams your GA list"

Or they could just spare everyone the hassle and not allow them at all, like they do now. ;)

Oh hey, look how that works!

Not that good apparently, if this matter is brought up constantly by different users and we need several huge threads maintained by users to work around this issue.

Not that good apparently

In your opinion (and others as well). However, there are obviously those that think it works fine (like me). Constantly is a relative term -- I've seen two threads about it, yours being the second. I see a lot more threads where people complain about not getting their "due CV."

This site was built/designed around gifting paid games (otherwise 0 CV games would already be allowed, no?), not games people leeched for free. Why add any additional server load -- CG is always looking for ways to reduce it (check Announcements) -- for games that are given out for free?

Also -- we get enough threads complaining about "why don't I get CV for blah blah blah" as it is. Adding 0 CV games to the GA list would only add to those threads and increase the number of support tickets (which people complain about a LOT more than 0 CV games).

Sorry, but I see absolutely no benefit to adding this "feature" and only pitfalls if it is added. The key drop threads aren't necessarily a way to "circumvent" the current system (as you claim) -- because as I've stated, the system (and site) was designed only for paid games.

I was mainly refering to the statements others made in this thread, that this issue has already been discussed numerous times.
Using the search function, you can find some threads with the exact same suggestions, mostly using the same arguments on both sides than we are currently.
Also, there are many threads like "Why can't I give away x".

I see a lot more threads where people complain about not getting their "due CV."

I think most of them are either about bundled games or about CV drops when the steam price drops, so not really corresponding to this topic. If the CV for free games would be 0P, there would be no doubt what you'll get for this game - nothing.

This site was built/designed around gifting paid games not games people leeched for free.

That is exactly my point - the games people bought, in bundles or even for the full price, which then can't be given away, because they were somewhere sometime given away for free. And those are not always the crappy ones, there are some great games out there which are banned because of this (like Deponia, The Ship,...).
And if some idiots see some sense in grabbing free keys to throw them on SG without getting CV, I say let them - I still think this would be way less than with any bundle or 95% off game,

Sorry, but I see absolutely no benefit to adding this "feature" and only pitfalls if it is added.

I guess we can aggree to disagree ;-)

That is purely speculative. I don't think this would happen. The servers can handle enough, they don't break down when a new bundle drops, why should they when a new free game drops? If the games are 0P there is no need for people that just want to grab a quick CV boost to create a GA., so I don't think that there were more or even as much as GAs with these games opposed to the hours/days after a new bundle is released..

New bundles generate a couple hundred usually, but sometimes less. Free key drops tend to be in the tens of thousands, and even 10% would be a larger load than any bundle.
I like your idea and wouldn't mind an implementation, but as long as the site won't move to commercial servers (in which case i'd cost a metric fuckton of money to operate it), I don't think it will happen.
Well, unless the price of a dual-CPU mobo that support Xeons and the price of high-density memory chips drop sharply. :)

I drop 'em in the Steam forums for that particular game. At least there chances are better you'll get someone who actually wants to play the game and not just +1 their collection count.

"but really there are not that many ungiftable games that come up in bundles"

I had 3 this month. I'm not sure how many bundles I bought in this time, but it was not that much, maybe five. And I have the feeling it's getting more. Actually, it's pretty obvious for bundle creatos to include these games - the creators/publisher/whatever seem to open for deals like this.

" If there are, drop them in the Orphan Key thread Sighery mentioned, or join a group and ask if anyone wants it on Steam."

That's exactly what I mean by "going the extra mile". We have a great system here to share games with other people but still need to work around it to actually give something away.

I don't know how many times this discussion has been created, but the poll always leans on the "no" side, people discuss how good/bad they think this idea would be, and not a single thing changes at all.

Apparently this pool is pretty close to 50:50, with "Yes" leading at the moment.

Like I already said, I know there are ways to "get rid" of these keys, I just don't think it is rational to ban them from being given away via SG.

An addition to the other con-arguments: The more GAs you give the more slots you get. Would be unfair to those who paid. And why always a new thread about this instead of posting in the numerous other ones?

That is actually a the first con-argument which is valid in my opinion. You would need to exclude 0P games from the calculation of GA slots, which means some extra development effort.

About the new thread: I did'nt think about that, sorry. I had a quick look at the suggestions section and didn't find an thread for this topic, so I created one without really searching.

Probably been mentioned, but you may be forgetting how most people don't like seeing a giveaway for the same game 1000 times in a row on the homepage.
Then there's how many times the site has had issue in recent history due to handling the records of every giveaway ever done.
This would add a lot of burden to the system.

Giveaways aren't free. They cost server resources. Ability to create infinite gibs is bad. Not gonna happen.

Better solution is to keep games on list with explanation why they can't be given away.

Suggestion: Search before posting

- extra load for server
- people spamming them just to up their GA count
- people spamming them to get more slots
- people spamming them to look awesome, even if they don't get cv
- people creating multiple accounts on facebook/steam just to grab as many free keys as possible, then drop them here

as mentioned above, there are at least 2 dedicated threads to drop free keys.
there's also gleam.io, you can create a competition and post it here.

I don't see why this should be done, since it does not anything of value to this site and it's simply easier to drop them in a thread instead of going all the way through creating a giveaway for it, waiting until it's finished, send out the key and hope for it to be marked as received.

This has seen before, can we just ban also post about 0 cv for free games? Not personal, just this kind of post are here one or two at month, maybe more.
