I got my key straight from the devs, just sign up on the runic games forum and subscribe to the mailing list, got mine within a day.

So, is this a beta or a "beta", like Diablo 3, which was a glorified demo released in batches to drum up hype and had absolutely shit all beta testing going on?

They actually tested something... but that had nothing to do with the game itself. I think they were mostly looking to test their servers and see if they could handle the load.
