There is not enough games where you play as a dragon

As the title says.

Its disappointing this is true, i mean there is some but its often done in a weird way.

Closest games are the ones where you play as a reptilian race, like the Elder Scrolls games.

Just not enough where you play as either a large dragon in an engaging story or an anthromorphic dragon whos fighting to figure out who he is or something

There is also a lack of ones as a companion beside you.

I wish theyd release games like Spyro (the original and all the releases before skylanders) onto steam or even origin because even though its meant for kids, it still gives me a good laugh :)

there was a mmo for pc that let you have a dragon char if u were subbed there were a lot of characters and one of them was pretty big dragon compared to the size of the elfs, humans and other races but i cant remember its name :)
it was 3d client based thou its very old ... a new game like that with better graphics and newer tech would be great

I strongly recommend Drakan: Order of the Flame. It is a PC game from 99 and I wish that steam carried it. You play as both the Dragon and his companion Rhynn. There is plenty of good action and humor mixed in the adventure and puzzles of this game.

Divinity II lets you play as a dragon with a pretty cool skill-set as well. It's too bad the Dragon form doesn't feel more powerful, but it's still fun to fly around and burn things :P
