I have not brought a game at release for that ridiculous $100 ( I live in NZ ) price tag in quite some time. The last game i can remember paying 100 bucks for was World in Conflict which came out in 2007 and i almost regretted paying so much for it immediately.

So do you buy games on release or wait for their price to plummet?

With my huge backlog? Why the hell would I do that? I have to think twice and play the game right away if I spend more than $10.

Not really, my first game was GTA 4 and I did regret it to some extent, because I had paid 60 SGD (singapore dollars, around 1.35 SGD is equivalent to 1 USD currently) for it and my laptop at that time was rather weak. Not to mention, the freaking frustration GFWL brought me with the unsave-able game, bugging me constantly like a pest saying I needed to connect online when I already was. And I only got to enjoy the game considerably was when I got my gaming PC, which is like only in 2013, so that's about 3-4 years after I bought the game. (GTA 4 was like ~20 USD on steam at that time)

Depends on how badly I want te game. And sometimes it's just a good therapy to buy a game when you're having a bad day. Also, uhm... I would pay 100 bucks for a special edition of the games I love, like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc.

If i really want a game, i may even pre-purchase it, it just depends on which game, my regretted purchase is Rekoil.

Depends on the game. Last game I bought on release was Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, but usually I just pre-order them, like Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD REMIX and Dark Souls 2.

Usually I wait for a sale after release. The only moment I consider pre-ordering or purchasing at full price is to support indie developers.

Sometimes, when the game is really "must have" (Fallout 4 or Half-Life 3 for example)

Almost never. I bought Bioshock Infinite when they gave 3 games with the game and 17$ cash back. That deal was just too good to turn down. No regrets.

It depends on the game.

  • If it has preorder bonus that is genuinely interesting and/or unavaliable after release.

  • If it has DLC and is a likely contender for Game of the Year.

  • The system it is for.

PC games usually are put on my wait list for 75% off or better. Console/portable games are usually snapped up at release if they're main franchises as they never get price dropped at a relatively sane rate.

I wait until half-price, at least. If DLC comes out for the game, then I wait for half-price on the "gold" version.
