That's a pretty narrow-minded comment. What would you consider a good album cover then?

Probably something without a standard issue boogieman that's on every other metal cover or without a mighty, manly and definitely not gay warrior in leather thongs with shaved chest swinging a plastic axe that looks like batman logo.
Seriously those metalheads must have some templates on how to make their album covers as uniform as possible. It's either the boogieman for heavy metal, a skull or a zombie for death metal, goat/pentagram/forest/pandamen for black metal, gore pics for grind, and then there's variations on the boogieman shit like the not-gay warrior fighting a dragon usually or the not-gay warrior posing with their shaved chests on display, that usually goes for speed metal and power metal and such :D.
It even goes as far as if all those covers were made by a single artist. I suspect those metal bands are demanding that their cover artist only copy the style of some other metal band album cover because any imagination and progress in metal = heresy lol :D

You haven't posted an album cover tho! I do agree with you but when I was 13 I was in a smiliar state thinking everything else than the genre of my preference sucked including album art. (Not saying you are 13, just that I can relate to your opinion) It's stereotypical just like money/almost nude women/drugs/guns on Hip Hop covers.
I do agree on that the power metal and bands like iron maiden had some weird covers, but when you look at it as art on its own you can consider it as not too shabby. It's well made after all and the ridiculousness somehow is what makes them what they are. All the covers of each genre follow a certain theme that's correct but when you are not open enough to consider them as serious you can't see that there are exceptions.
I don't exclusively listen to metal nor do I like to consider myself part of what people would call metallers, because they think they are exclusive just like other people are towards metal, but I added some album covers. Try to look at them as what they are rather than stupid metal covers. Those are really well made and nice to look at. There is some serious skill that went into these.
This one is extremely NSFW and gorey but I like Mark Riddicks style.

here's a couple of cover arts
It's not like they're particularly awesome, imaginative or original, but at least they're not looking like copies of one another

So you think the covers I have posted are unoriginal and bad?

Original Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses ofcourse

It used to be the cover but it was replaced by the current cover because of the controversy it created and several labels didn't want that cover.

Yeah I know right? This was like the only thing ever that caused some controversy, totally doesn't fit the band.

Just a few picks, off the top of my head. Thought I'd throw in a few things that aren't heavy metal.
I like this album's followup better (heresy, I know), but back when I was in middle school, every third guy in the room had this cover on a poster or t-shirt.
I already liked Sorayama's artwork, but combining it with the Marilyn-esque pose made this cover an instant favorite.
I like puns, and the cover of Moving Pictures has several. The men on the cover are literally, physically, moving pictures. The people are reacting to the paintings because they are emotionally moving pictures. And if you've ever seen the back cover, you'll know they filmed the making of this scene... and a movie is a series of moving pictures. Said movie was played on tour so... yeah, moving again. The rightmost painting is the cover of one of their previous albums, and though I've seen that fact mentioned frequently, I've never seen anyone point out that since that picture appears on a lot of Rush's album covers, going from one to another, that makes it another moving picture.
The iconic, Wurlitzer-esque ELO logo/spaceship that appears on many of their albums (for better or worse) makes for some interesting covers.
The cover is great, but I love pretty much all the artwork associated with this album, including the disc itself.
Yeah, I'm an old man.

I was curious, what is your favorite album cover? It can be a band you don't like, as long you like the cover.
Mine is Dio's Master of the moon.
