Well they are the only ones who are able to check why you have been banned and inform you accordingly. So I guess you're out of luck. Note that they won't lift the VAC ban however as seen in the following article:

Steam will not tell you why you were banned or what game you have been banned from. Nor will they overturn it.
What I can say for sure is that you did not get VAC banned for idling, that isn't how VAC works, it's an automated system that scans the files on your PC for known signatures of software used to cheat,. even if the software isn't running.
Firstly I'd try to locate the source of the ban, otherwise you'll get banned from other VAC enabled games when you try to play them.

I've heard Steam support is rather notoriously staunch about refusing to explain their reasoning for things. There was a high-profile case a while back of a fella being banned from Steam altogether (not just VAC banned - couldn't even play his games at all), and even after he was reinstated, support refused to explain what the heck that was about.

I find it hard to imagine that was the reason. It may have just plain been a mistake of some kind. But, I'm at a loss to provide any real educated guesses. Sorry that they're putting you through this.
Edit: Whoops, and I see below that you have probably figured out what the deal is, so that's something at least!

Exactly. VAC would have to be moved entirely on Steam Network, and even then it would still need to ask for relevant data from steam client, so if you run ASF only it'd not be possible because ASF doesn't have logic for that request built-in.
It's not possible to get VAC from ASF, I'm more likely to believe in classical ban or trade ban, but not VAC.

Did you use your phone number on any other accounts?
VAC and Game bans apply to all accounts on a phone number
If an account that has a phone number registered to it receives a VAC or Game ban, all other accounts that used the same phone number at the time of the infraction will also receive a ban. If the other accounts do not own the game they will still receive the ban and be unable to purchase the title on that account. The phone number on an account that receives a ban will be suspended for three months and cannot be applied to another account during that time. The cooldown duration for applying a phone number after a ban will increase each time a cooldown is applied.
This feature is not enabled for all games and will be used at the discretion of the developer.

no, you don't. i gave them my number a long time ago. no sms spam, no calls, nothing.

wth? why would u use a public phone number and risking it? lol, no way they're going to remove the ban but good luck

You clearly should not have used a public number for your account, as Valve will most likely not lift the ban :(
Also, I've never received any SMS or calls.

it won't be ;) Valve will simply tell you you should not have used public phine number. After all you can be an alt account of the original cheater (in their eyes) simply trying to lift ban from your alt account saying you used public phone number ;)

VAC can't be done for idling, unless you're running a VAC protected game while idling with a program.
Also, keep in mind that VAC bans are delayed, and usually result from something happening a few months ago.
If you know for sure you didn't cheat (which everyone claims, lol) then check:
Is your phone number shared with someone who's VAC banned? VAC bans apply to all accounts using the same phone number.
Did you family share with someone who's VAC banned?
If you don't know what game it's for, check Steam or ask Steam Support.

ASF can't trigger VAC, because VAC is triggered by playing (only), while steam client hooks VAC features to the game process.
It can be triggered by Idle Master, as it uses the same steam client and dll libraries for interacting with it, it can't be triggered by ASF as it's using it's own steam client that doesn't even have those features built-in (so even if ASF client receives VAC request from steam network, it's simply ignored). Valve would need to completely rewrite how VAC works, and even then ASF would keep working and being VAC-free, unless they moved VAC logic entirely to steam network (but it couldn't work as steam network needs your PC data, and steam client is providing that, so still...).
You found out the reason yourself already. Steam uses shared policy for VACs, meaning that if different account playing your shared library triggers VAC, you get VAC too, and it works also with e-mails and phone numbers - all of that is considered shared so VAC on account A will affect all other accounts having same e-mail or phone number.
