Here's a non-action non-zombie end of the world kinda movie. I remember it quite haunting in atmosphere but then again it's been a long time since I watched it: The Day After (1983)

The premiere of this television movie was a major media event. No sponsors bought commercial time after the nuclear war broke out, so the last half was aired without commercials.
I guess it was haunting not just for me then!

Maybe include also Terminator? Is about avoiding the end of the world(using time travel contraditions, so skynet can't interpret illogical timelines and break down), so I guess it counts :P

The Day After Tomorrow, 2004
After climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is largely ignored by U.N. officials when presenting his environmental concerns, his research proves true when an enormous "superstorm" develops, setting off catastrophic natural disasters throughout the world. Panic in the Year Zero - classic 50s nuclear annihilation paranoia. Pretty sure it was the first.
The Last Wave - signs and portents, bizarre, trippy and surreal.
Night of the Comet - pure 80s schlock - valley girls battle zombies and evil scientists, good stupid fun.
Threads - British TV drama about the aftermath of nuclear war. Dire, approach with caution.

Stalker - the original Andrei Tarkovsky 1979 version, and then the 2017 remaster.
Helps if you understand Russian, fluently, but both versions can usually be found with English and other language localization subtitles.

Don't know about movies because they always seem way too short to describe the crisis.
Shows on the other hand extend it waaaay too much.
Well i just finished "12 Monkeys" the show and i can tell you it was great!

It's a Disaster 2012
APOCOLYPSE BRUNCH MOVIE <3
End of the world comedy starring David Cross and Julia Stiles. The movie has realistic characters, an awkward but lovable dynamic between them, and a genuine understanding of comedy, nailing both subtle and in your face comedy. Not your typical zombie; it captures some friends natural reactions to a situation outside of their control. All star cast (in my opinion) and an easy watch. Make a mimosa and laugh as you watch a brunch fall apart while the world around it does the same.

For zombie apocalypse movies, 2004's Dawn of the Dead is my favorite, although Cockneys vs. Zombies is SUCH a hoot, if you're looking for a funny one. Don't believe me? Click me! I also had a blast with Detention of the Dead, but perhaps more so because I know the movie Breakfast Club so well ;D
My SiL LOVES The Day After Tomorrow I don't think you could accurately count the dozens of times she's watched it!

Sir, you have earned a blue heart and a +1,000,000,000,000 for Cockneys vs Zombies. I love, love, love, love, LOVE that movie!
And the 2004 Dawn of the Dead was good, but I can ONLY watch the directors cut. I seem to know the missing parts and the part where they break into the mall should have been in the regular cut.

These Final Hours (2013)
watched it because it starred Sarah Snook, who caught my eyes in Predestination (another fine mindbending movie, just not apocalypse-themed)

They are out there. We watch them. We love to hate them. They are the end of the world or disaster movie genre. And I'm surprised that nobody has brought up this movie subject before. Least of all me. I LOVE these kinds of movies. Movies like zombie apocalypse, asteroid strikes, alien invasion, weather events or volcanic or even plague movies. All fit under that type.
EG- Dante's Peak and The Day After Tomorrow are two of my favorites. 12 Monkeys will always stand out as a classic of that genre as well.
And yes, I do count in The Worlds End Simon Pegg movie. I loved that too.
So, do any of you people out there like these movies too? And if so, recommend some titles to the community that you think should stand out.
