I recently stumbled across Cry of Fear which is an FPS/mystery/horror mod. You might try checking that one out.
[Edited to correct the name. I blame trying to respond while only half awake. P )

Tried that mod a few weeks ago with friends. The tears were still streaming my eyes with laugher. One person managed to lock themselves in a room, I charged a big wickerman with a nightstick yelling "For the EMPEROR!" and then there was the flying beds; oh gods the beds! :p
Though been poked with Underhell mod that apparently has a great single player, with supposedly decent voice acting that is meant to be a FPS mystery horror game.

Heroine's Quest is really awesome: http://store.steampowered.com/app/283880/ It's a mixture of Point and Click Adventure and classic RPG.

It is a spiritual successor to Quest for Glory/Hero's Quest, basically.

I played it a lot, but stopped some time after they heavily nerfed the tesla gun.
and there's only so much replay value when you're playing the same few levels over and over again.
strange, it says the game is in my library, but the achievement page says I don't own the game. I just hope my hard earned achievements aren't gone :P

might have been my bad.
when I went to the Achievement page it still says " You do not own this game"
http://steamcommunity.com/stats/AlienSwarm/achievements
but my stats / achievements (via the "View your stats" link on the store page) are still recorded and accessible

"and there's only so much replay value when you're playing the same few levels over and over again."
You just described the main failing of nearly every single MOBA and competitive game!

Expendabros, Super Crate Box. Still have to start Heroine's Quest but heard good word of mouth from that.
I've got a gripe against the Steam store now: none of those show up if you look for free games.

Well if you noticed those games are officially tagged with "free to play" on Steam. The majority of the games I have listed are not listed as free to play at all despite essentially being so!

So this a necro bump (necro not Necrons, that would be HERESY!) turns out pretty much every Half Life 2 Mod is now a Standalone F2P game.
Therefore mods like Exterminatus, Resistance and Liberation, Underhell, Zombie Panic, Insurgency Modern Infantry Combat, Age of Chivalry etc, they are all free games. They only need Source SDK to play.

A long time ago in a build far, far earlier, Steam was promoting mods for several of their core games heavily; even to go as far as give them their own store pages. This was the Golden age of Steam, where the HERESY of Origin were but a whisper and even the evils of Uplay had not yet revealed their ugly head. Team Fortress 2 was yet to go Free 2 Play and become a Hat Simulator. It was good times for all, and Source Engine mods were popular. Sadly these mods slowly vanished from the news feeds and disappeared from knowledge.
These games only require Source SDK to run. They will typically download them automatically. List below of so far games I've checked that work.
Requires Source SDK
Empires
Eternal Silence
Pirates, Knights and Vikings II
Exterminatus
Resistance and Liberation
Age of Chivalry
Insurgency Modern Infantry Combat
Underhell
Standalone:
Neotokyo
Fistful of Frags
Lambda Wars
Others I haven't checked out but apparently they all will work with Source SDK.
