I'm looking for an RPG which is similar to the Bioware / Obsidian ones. I played and really liked Mass Effect saga, Dragon Age saga, KotOR saga, Elder Scrolls saga, Fallout saga. Anything in that vein with a good story, interesting characters and i really like being able to develop your character's personality(mainly choosing how you will go about things and dialog choices, if you'll go the nice guy or the asshole way, etc).
Thanks for you suggestions!

How much character development do you have in Shadows of Mordor? The game seems really cool in terms of combat and i love the LotR universe. I just saw it as more combat oriented.
Played the first two Witcher games and they were great, some time around i'll get to buying the third one i hope.

I wouldn't call Mordor a RPG, action adventure yes.

Its like the Batman games. There is a plot line and some lore involved, but it focuses more on the action.

I'd say that Batman has a better story even, since I can't even remember what the story was in SoM, even though I played SoM more recently.

My comparison was talking more about the combat. However, I feel like I remember both stories well enough, and I'd say the plots were both good, although SoM had more lore aspect, although I've only played the first two Batman games so I don't know how much they really get into. A

One of the best in my opinion.

Another good game is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Giggity Goo +1 for Amalur: fun (and sometimes funny), open world, great quests (this one is hard to find!) with total control on how your character evolves and a variety of ways to customize them. I think this is a hidden gem that was glossed over by a lot of RPG fans.

played nwn1 and got bored on the second chapter (the forest), you could just farm xp with summoned enemies from a fountain and level up till you broke the game. -.-
i really liked the second game and the first expansion (mask of the betrayer). :3
also tried storm of zehyr but didn't like the map and missions. and mysteries of westgate bored me after a few hours. -.-

no mods, or mp, or the mmo game.

The first campaign is actually really awful, it was just a way for them to show what the engine can do. If you ever feel like blowing the digital dust off, I recommend Hordes of the Underdark, the third campaign. The second one is sort of a prequel but not necessary to enjoy the third game.

I meant the online PW servers for NWN, not the mmo, just to clarify:) They were full of amazing storytellers and awesome roleplayers for years, and still one of the only truly interactive rp environment in any multiplayer game. It's a shame that no others have tried to pick up the torch. /Grognard grumble concluded:)

I had looked at that game, and was interested because of the magic system, but I wasn't sure if it would have some of the problems like Morrowind (like the terrible hitboxes). Otherwise looks cool, if you don't mind the graphics.

Witcher series, the dark souls series,, dragons dogma, shadows of mordor, mount and blade warband. For some older games fable, and jade empire (made by bioware so you will probably like it) are classics. I've played all these games and I loved them.

I prefer the old version, haven't played the remake. It's hard to say with nostalgia vision but I think it's still probably a great game. I do recommend playing with a controller over a keyboard + mouse though. If you enjoy it, fable two is also pretty cool

If you like character development, you can't go wrong with Arcanum. It has a slight Fallout feel too it because Tim Cain was the project leader on it (same guy that was responsible for Fallout).

Other recommendations (probably repeats of others):
Wasteland 2 (I really enjoyed it)
Divinity: Original Sin (I haven't played it solo yet, I've started twice playing coop with different friends, but my coop partner and I were unable to get our schedules matched and we never went back to finish)
Expeditions: Conquistadors (highly underrated RPG)
Pillars of Eternity

If you like older RPGs:
Planescape Torment
Baldurs Gate 1 & 2
Icewind Dale 1 & 2
Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2
Temple of Elemental Evil

And if you haven't played it yet, the original Deus Ex, the 2nd one get's a bad rep, but it's not that bad, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution is good too.

Ok, Arcanum seems really interesting. Odd that i never heard of it! (Have played and liked Nevewinter Nights and the first Baldurs Gate)
Wasteland 2 I was not really sure how good it was, but i was wondering if it was worth it.
Pillars of Eternity was recommended by a friend, and i'll probably buy it when the next sale comes around =).
As for the Deus Ex, i have HR sitting on my library, might be a good time to boot it up. Do you need to play the first ones to follow the story? How does the original Deus Ex hold up today?

A lot of the people that didn't like Wasteland 2 were thinking they were going to be playing a sequel to Fallout 2. Wasteland may have inspired Fallout, but it's a completely different game. Just don't go in expecting Fallout. Steam says I've played 361 hours of it, and now that the director's cut is out, I want to play it again.

Human Revolution is a prequel to the original, so you don't need to play the original first. I haven't played the original in a few years, but I think it still holds up quite well for its age. There are a couple of graphical mods for it, the latest being Deus Ex: Revision. I watched the devs live stream it at release. It does look nice, but having played the original a dozen or so times, I noticed that they rearranged some of the levels and changed some scenes. If you've never played the original, you'll never know, but I'd still recommend experiencing the original game, maybe with with some updated texture packs, high res models and lighting mods before trying the Revision mod.

I played Divinity: Original Sin (621 hours), I really like the co-op feature and really enjoyed it single player as well.

I also played Wasteland 2 (188 hours) and like jimnms says, most people that disliked it were expecting Fallout.

I have a key for the Last Remnant from the HB bundle, would you say its worth it to activate it? I was thinking about wether i should keep it or give it away. I know it has turn-based RPG gameplay, but how does the character development fare?

I didn't like it, combat became tiresome, long and repetitive. Exploration is almost non existing, feels like you're just moving a chess piece on a board until somethink sees you like in Pokemon and go into combat mode where a bunch of units suddenly appear.

True Farcry is definitely different, I was just saying it because he wanted something similar to the Elder Scrolls. Also, I would try the Last Remnant, I have not played it for long but I honestly like it enough to continue playing it because it is way different from any other rpg game that's out there.

Permalink

Yeah that's true, Farcry is pretty much an FPS but I was saying it as "kind of" similar to Skryim and the Elder Scrolls (in the sense of quests and a whole open world). Honestly in my opinion I enjoyed playing The Last Remnant enough to continue playing it because the battle mechanics were definitely something I had never played before and it was just really interesting.

Can you give sone J-RPG a chance, I recommend you start with Persona 3-4 first ! I've spent 400 days of my life into those 2 games !

While not a big fan of JRPGs in general, i have heard lots of good thing on the Persona series so they might be worth it. How do they compare to more traditional JRPGs like FF or ChronoTrigger?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Have to say this, sorry for my English !

First, I recommend you do not try to play Persona 1 and 2. They are good, but theirs graphics are too old, can kill your interest in this franchise. Beside, the story of each Persona have no related with any versions in the series, so feel free to skip Persona 1 and 2 !

Persona 3 and 4, they are a very DARK FANTASY j-rpg disguise themselves as a anime - lovely looking game. Sound weird but I will compare this game with Mass Effect :D Instead playing as a super hero, you play as a high school student. In Mass Effect, I divide quest in 2 kind: quest to build your reputation, and quest to face against Reapers. You will do the same in Persona, replace Reapers with Shadows. Mass Effect have choices and consequences, Persona have too, and It's better ! The combat is the biggest difference between those 2 games, one is real time, one is turn based.

And Persona have something Mass Effect do not have. Remember you are a student ??! It's mean beside save the world, you still have a job of a student: high score tests, joining xyz club... So you need to balance your timetable, which day you go to beat the crap out of those Shadows, which day you have to stay home and prepare for the next test :D

Like a lot of japan games, Persona have a lot of things for you to do, especially Persona 4. Part time job, fishing, dating ... In term of relationship, remember Mass Effect 2, you need to play loyalty missions to gain someone trust ??! Persona have a system like that, but It's much much better. You can't gain someone fully trust just through 1 mission, you need to do their quest, not 1, a lot; give them something; spend time with them; have some requirements (I still remember this one, she need me to have highest score in the next test :D)

That's all I can say, play or not, the choice is yours. I bet It will worth your time !

Edit: For Persona 3, I think you better want to play the PSP version. Persona 4, go with VITA.

I won Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning here recently (thanks again guppy44, if you read this:) and have had a blast.
I'm tempted to recommend the Infinity Engine games but since you mentioned 3rd-person perspective rpgs specifically:

For years I played mods from http://neverwintervault.org/ for Neverwinter Nights, which you can get through gog.com for relatively cheap. It goes on sale often. The base game comes with 3 built-in campaigns, of which the third, Hordes of the Underdark, is best imo.
The sequel Neverwinter Nights 2 was incredibly buggy on release and has a lot less to offer for customization but the story campaigns are good, you can also get that at gog. No longer sold on the steam store, unfortunately.
Gothic 1 and 2 are absolute classics of the genre and you can get those on steam.

Seal of Evil (non-Steam, and I don't even know if they are still being sold or not) is a hidden gem with few people know of its existence. Great background music, complex crafting system, team-based combat (you control a team, instead of single characters), interesting story, but a bit dated, and the English voice acting is not quite good.
