you know, like the best books out there.

Starcraft made me play 40 hours on a weekend. Startopia is my go-to game right now, again! I reached the end of baldur´s gate only to restart before the last dungeon just for fun... 2 times

Last week i played Guild Wars 2 up until 6 AM... becouse i was saying all the time "Just one more event." "Let's just 100% this map" and stuff like that. Also this happens every time i play a Single Player game with an interesting story. Last 2 SP games i played were Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Darksiders 1 and on both i had instances that i played for like 10 - 12 hours on weekends, but i haven't completed them becouse i'm a crazy completionist and can't progress in the game without doing everything. XD

I would agree, but there's no end to Mount and Blade so this answer is invalid

In the last year, i think only Bastion and Cave Story really made me play "nonstop".
Oh yeah, Portal 2, but that was only 3-4 Hours.

I played a ton of Oblivion and Assassins Creed 2 + Brotherhood and a few other games almost exactly one year ago, when i had no internet for 4 months, but that was mostly because i had no other choice :D
I enjoyed them, but i wouldn't have played them thaaaat much in that short amount of time.

Mass Effect 1 made me play 20 hours until near the end, then i lost my savegame, didn't touch it since.
(If i can pick up ME3 at some point, i'll play through the entire series in one week i think :D)
If i go back further than 1 year, i had to type for ages, so yeah. Not gonna do that.

Guess: because single player is short

Besides, there's no shame in that. They are fun.

Hmm.. There is plenty of games that really hooked me up - Mafia (1), Bioshock (1), Warcraft 3, Age of empires II (I used to play that as a child all the time).. and more. I also have thousands of hours played in WoW (played until Cataclysm came). And some more recent catchy games - Sleeping dogs (great atmosphere), To the moon (unforgivable story).

I've played many games that way but the first one coming to my mind and the one i'm proud to mention only too is Halo 2.

Bought it on day of release here in my country, later tonight on the sameday did an all nighter with that game, beat it without sleeping then had a terrible day at school (8 a.m. -> 5p.m. in classes with no sleep, no coffee). Then 2 days later i beat the game again since i had free time to do it. I've played this game nonstop for 2 years... no xbox live at the time, rarelly bought games. All i used to do was explore maps, every freaking corner in a map probably got explored by me, find skulls for epic randomness, do matches between various factions in the game (while in campaign). I even got to beat the campaign with all skulls on and legendary difficulty, something that i will never bother to do again since it's frustrating as hell.

All in all that was probably the game i played the most in my life along with half life, 2 years non stop playing, like everyday i played 2-4 hours after school and after watching dragonball z and saint seiya on TV. I rarelly used computer back then. I don't even know how i managed to not get bored of it...

Devil May Cry 4 and 3. It's just something about them that makes me wanna play it more and try to beat it on the higher difficulties. It get a bit TOO hard on the highest difficulty though. ^_^
Bullet Hell games have the same effect on me, but the difficulty (usually) becomes unbearable too fast.
