I don't think it's a bad way to promote yourself, because in fact they giveaway games. So people are happy with that. Also it's hard to be promote in another way. But their's some exception like the one promoting bullshit unminded games are boring youtube channel. You need to have something enteresting or people even if you give a game will just not follow

Prolly you could monetize that video and get rich. Anyways, nothing's bad with self promoting. Of course, a good wine needs no advertisement, but a good wine needs to be advertised about to let the people know about it. That's Shakespeare, AYLI, Rosalind's speech at Epilogue. When videogame companies first start, they start with absolutely nothing, no nothing, no popularity. But when they make a game, they put up a beautiful teaser. The game becomes awesome and the company goes viral. That's self promotion. You are nothing unless you are self promoted or sponsored by some other company.

Depends on what form it takes and how it's approached.
Don't mind:
Promotions within giveaway descriptions by anyone for any purpose
Gaming related promotion by Steamgifts regulars on the forum
Not so keen on:
Non-gaming promotion on the forum
Gaming-related promotion by someone who only signed up to promote themselves on the forum

I usually click on the threads to see if they have a giveaway, if not then I will just ignore it, but if they do I might check the stuff out. It is kinda annoying, though, trying to find puzzles and interesting threads and I just see "COME WATCH MY VIDEOS AT xXMINECRAFTLORD69Xx ON YOUUUUTUBE.". I am fine with the kickstarters though, at least they are somewhat interesting sometimes.

I usually don't mind if there's a decent (aka not bundle games) giveaway that doesn't require you to do something like subscribing or voting. Something like "here's a giveaway, also if you have some time, please check out our game on Greenlight" is okay with me. In my mind it's somewhat like paying for an advertisement.

i don't mind because they are just people trying to obtain their dream of making games and getting rich and famous. The free giveaways make it all the better though, i don't lose anything by supporting them, i only gain, so it's worth it.

Honestly I don't mind self promotion. There are so many ways to promote yourself so why not give something away that will make people truly happy. Even if it is shameless self promotion I don't really mind because I know that they are just trying to get noticed just like any other advertisement.

I really don't mind them. I'll occasionally check out some of the promotions because there will be some interesting things to see, otherwise, I'll just be like, "Oh, that exists" and carry on whatever I was doing. Though I have to agree with you about the "We will give keys to whoever votes for us on Greenlight" because I don't think the Steam store should have trashy Greenlit games that were only voted for because people wanted free keys. Thinking about it on the other end though, how else would they advertise their things? Self-promotion is easy and free.

I don't like self promotion, because I don't like anything similar to advertisement or spam. Even though I don't lose anything from supporting them, I feel that they haven't really done anything to win over my support. Maybe I'm just lazy.

I am kind of mixed it kind of depends on why they are doing it how they are doing it who it is and such

It depends on the context, and the way in which they promote themselves, but as far as SteamGifts goes, I don't mind people promoting stuff in their giveaways. It's a nonintrusive form of advertising, and the rules of SG force them to give away the game to the winner, regardless of whether or not the winner has voted/viewed/supported what they asked for (last I checked, anyway), which seems fair enough to me.

I don't mind the giveaways/threads where a dev tries to promote their game a bit. I've discovered some interesting games that way.
The ones with 'no strings attached' giveaways are nice. It increases the chances people will look at their game, but doesn't force people to 'like', 'upvote', 'tweet', 'share', etc... A lot of people would upvote whatever just for the chance at a free game. It seems really dishonest to fake the statistics that way. If I like something, I'll tell my friends about it. I don't want to be 'forced' to do it.

i do not mind them advertising depending on what it is. if it is a game that they are trying to get greenlit then something along those lines is fine though i will not rate up whatever it is if i dislike the content. if it is a gaming YouTube channel that does lets play then i feel a small amount of dislike before shifting back to i don't really care mode. it is really situational, but most of the time it does not bother me unless its a strings attached or implied force promotion. also do not ask how i am if you don't want my life story! /crys in corner. whelp off to bed.

I dislike those who don't regularly participate in the forum but still advertise themselves. Most of these people are newbies who simply spam forums hoping to be the next pewdiepie. If you're a regular forum user and make a giveaway to go with your self promotion, then I don't have any issues.
In general, I find self promotion to be quite sad. Your name should be passed along by others instead of you. Building your popularity based on spam is not a strong foundation.

Self promotion for anything is good as long as it what people want and if it will be good when the item is good as well.

I think it should be seperate from the main stuff. A second forum. I don't mind it, generally, and never do with a giveaway, but I think it should be put somewhere else because they can get annoying.
HOWEVER! What does bug me is that you're about to get a lot of youtube views and I didn't think of this before you. You evil genius!

Self promoting, well yes I kinda dislike it a little , but lets say.. if its something good, for example a game in greenlight , maybe a good visual novel or something , it doesn't have much attention and votes are low , then creating GAs to get people's attention on the game is pretty much okay with me.
well that's the only case I would be totally okay with. Other than that ... meh I try not to care much.

Well there is a belief that 'as long as the given game is an AAA title its ok to do anything' like advertisement, making special for steam group etc.I see that thing as an opportunity for some developers to promote their product a bit cheaper than other methods and it seems like theyre the most generous developers in the World. No,they actually just spend money to spread the word except a few ones who later make big developer giveaways as a thanks to steamgifts users.I am neutral about this situation but sometimes it can be annoying(Long descriptions with multiple links and/or yt channels contest etc.)Since there is no rule in the FAQ(or is there?) this things will continue...

Well, I am fine with self advertising as long as it doesn't spam or forcibly asked to like the page or support something. If wanna do it, promote sincerely. That's my thoughts

Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).
How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)
People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.
Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)
Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.
If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)
Giveaways here!
Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.
