Hello everyone hope you are having a good day 🍎 I'm dealing with screen flickering problem on my laptop.

I'm not quite sure if it's the display cable or the screen itself that's causing the issue,

so I'm turning to you all wonderful peep on steam gift for some guidance. Your help is much appreciated! πŸ‰

Screen Flickering

Hardware Info

  • Laptop: Acer Aspire VN7-591G
  • Display: LG LP156WF6-SPB1
  • OS: Windows 10 LTSC 2021
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4720HQ
  • Chipset: Intel HM86 (Lynx Point)
  • Integrated Graphics: Intel Haswell-MB GT2 (Intel HD Graphics 4600)
  • Dedicated Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
  • Display Settings: Default at 60Hz, as per the model specs
    More information added
  • Mboard: Hades HBS 14206-1
  • Display eDP cable: WISTRON Hades HBS EDP Cable 860 450.02W02.0001

What I've gather so far

  • External Display Works ⭐ I've tested with an external display connected via HDMI, and it works just fine. So, it seems like the laptop's GPU is in the clear.
  • Cold Temperature made it worse β›„ This screen flickering has been a problem for years now but it got worse recently. Usually when the room gets cold it will starts with a slow flicker then goes faster and can last for about 5 - 10 minutes. The workaround I found is to cranking up the screen brightness to the max and set the background pure white and clear or minimize any darker color icons/element helped reduce the flickering and stabilize the display after a minute or so.
  • Battery ded πŸ”‹ My laptop battery is toast it won't hold any charge so I always plugged in when used. That might be playing a part as well.
  • Cable and Physical Condition πŸ€” I opened up the case and checked the cable connecting the main board to the screen; it seems secure on both ends. No drops or spills near the laptop, so there's no physical damage or cracks from the outside.

Looking for more Information

I'm curious if anyone knows where I can find compatible display datasheets for this laptop. I'd like to check out the prices for possible replacement and see if there are cheaper or possible upgrade out there. Any recommendations for forums or websites where I can ask these kind of questions would be super helpful. Thanks you all in advance and don't forget to ♻️ your garbage.

https://www.panelook.com/index.php (For checking display panel information and compatibility [Not sure if it 100%])

Following Troubleshooting step:

  1. Tried connect with HDMI port to external display (Properly mean the graphic card should still work πŸ€”)
  2. Remove battery completely doesn't seem to fixed and luckily the laptop still open with np~
  3. Try to talk with Acer customer service again ...I don't want to talk about it 😀
  4. Unplug and reconnect the cable from Mainboard to the laptop panel display not working but

I have measured the voltage on both ends of the eDP cable. The mainboard end shows 19V on all four power pins as well as two 3.3 V LCDVDD pin, but the other end has one of suppose power pin are without 19V but other 3 does and no 3.3V LCDVDD at all. So it might really be the cable gonna wait till this weekend before I disassemble the screen to check the inverter one more time

Upnext
1 Check inverter fuse and cable to the display itself. Diagnose this gonna be nightmare. I want to check to be sure that I don't misunderstand something

I have been using Acer Aspire V15 for 6 years with just minor screen problem which store solved be replacing screen for free in varranty time.
If you are looking for a replacement again in laptops, I may recomend Acer Nitro series, I replaced mine by one of these and I am satisfied. Price was slightly lower than was my Aspire in time I got it.

Edit: My old Aspire laptop is still working in its best quality, just battery doesn't last long, so it is permanently plugged when use.

Thanks for sharing and glad to hear you having a good experience with them~

I got a soft spot for mine Aspire V Nitro as well, even though it's not running at 100% most of the times.
I had replace the wi-fi component upgrade the ram and ssd, this baby has been by my side for nearly 8 years now.

so I'm looking to get it fixed if possible as long as the price isn't too steep XD
Unfortunately, the warranty long since expired when I try to get them to fix the wifi problem ;p

Have a happy and healthy day ahead~ 🍏

No idea if this will have any affect, but have you tried removing the battery and then turning it on with just the power cord? I think most laptops will run with the battery removed if you keep the power connected to the wall. Maybe it draws power through the battery and just charges while you have it plugged in and there is something wrong with the battery. Removing the battery would guarantee that you get power directly from the wall.

Oh, I didn't think about having to open the computer to remove the battery. I haven't used a laptop in a while and I remember the ones where you just push a button and the battery comes right off from the outside. Now that I think about it, I did have to replace the hinges and the plastic cover that the screen mounts to on someone's laptop and that had an internal battery. Hopefully you can just remove the back plastic cover and get it out without having to disassemble too much.

Yeaa I really miss the day where you can easily change the battery both on mobile and laptop it so much easier 😀

I have open the case before I think I broke bunch of plastic hinge inside and almost rip off the keyboard accidentally 😹

Just to change basic hard drive, andI have like all thumbs for hands so will take my time tmr, πŸ‰

Actually I might move on from laptop and seriously build a gaming PC one of these day πŸ€”

My guess it's the screen. You can try to do the software things in link 1, else replace the screen. Link 2 is just some quick info I looked up on the topic that I thought is relevant to some degree.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/monitor-flashing-on-and-off-when-computer-is-cold/3e0df9bd-b139-4a90-aad3-f5af091b9fd3

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/mkfnbz/from_time_to_time_this_happens_when_starting_my/

Found this website for compatible displays but it seems to show a lot of options, maybe I'm not using it right, or missing some numbers from the end of the model number of the laptop.

https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/section/Articles/1245191276/Locating+your+laptop+model+number/ if you search your model number here you'll see a lot of similar results, except they all have additional numbers at the end, so maybe check the back of your laptop for some, or maybe just go for "series" ?

https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Acer/ASPIRE~VN7-591G~SERIES/

Around $60 seems to be the price.

Wow thank you very much for taking your time and gather all the links and information you provided, Will check it out one by one πŸ“

Link 1: Tried reinstall driver from the manufacture driver page and update it again doesn't seem to work but worth a try again 🍊
Link 2: Interesting read about the humidity and cold solder joint on the board will have a look when I open up the case tmr πŸ‡
Link 3 & 4: Certainly the site would be useful for price comparison and bargaining with the repair shop, if I can't fix this myself 🍌

Have a blessed and beautiful day ahead 🌞

+1
😁<What I was going to say was already written

I am looking at MP4 and this is what it looks like to me....
1.When the refresh rate is wrong around the driver.
2.Hardware failure around the display backlight.
3.Similar to the behavior when the power supply is unstable.
πŸ€”β€¦

I think it would be easiest to output to another monitor to see what kind of rendering you get.
If the troublesome method does not cure the problem after trying to restore the system (recovery), it is probably not a problem with the software, OS, or drivers, but with the battery or the monitor itself.
If there is a warranty period, it would be best to contact the manufacturer.
If the warranty period has expired, you might consider trying to output to another monitor to see if it renders correctly, and then try changing the refresh rate to see if it improves.

As you say, it is difficult to isolate the cause because it could be a wiring problem, or it could be cured by simply unplugging and plugging.【Thinking】( Β΄ο½₯Ο‰ο½₯)Β΄ο½₯Ο‰)(Ο‰ο½₯(ο½₯Θο½₯ )

Humu I have try to boot both from Medicat and Ubuntu usb drive I have lying around sadly it doesn't seem to work.

The HDMI port extension to another display seem to work 😺 So this might cut out the software or drivers issues I think πŸ€”

My dads laptop had a similar looking issue. In his case it was the cable connecting to the screen. It didn't appear to have any damage, but
rearranging it a bit seemd to make the issue better. I ended up replacing the cable and it's been working fine since.

^ This. ^

Have you unplugged the cable at both ends and replugged it in. It is a surprising fix... sometimes.

If cable replacement is an option, then that's the most likely resolution, and most economical repair.

LCD screen wiring is haywire which can damage your board if leave it without maintenance. Because cold temperature countries when using electronic will create vapors without you knowing too when starting or let the system running in longtime.

Laptop battery also play a part here when spoiled or faulty battery that doesn't charge or work well might cause internal system temperature to increase that might create vapors or even worse a short circuit that might cause fire when it melt.

Below is the part price in ebay, but i recommend you compare prices and check your country IT shop price first.

Also if possible get new battery replacement too. I always encourage laptop users to remove their battery when plugin cable for long period of work/gaming as the battery memory kept charging will decrease the lifespan. Only certain laptops models are able to remove battery and most of it is not. The explanation is because voltage overflow into system will cook up parts from motherboard which most stuff is built in.

Thank you for comprehensive guide 🐡

Humidity seem to be highly probable consider where I am πŸ™ˆ

Luckily battery on my model is removable so I have remove the battery for now, πŸ™‰

and will be replacing it after the display is fixed the price seem to comparable to my country actually πŸ™Š

Sorry a bit curious on decrease lifespan part do you mean other component other than the battery itself? 🐡

Wish you a fantastic and productive day! 🍌

Electronic parts have a limited lifespan due to a few factors as in "wear and tear" on internal, exposure to environmental factors such as heat and humidity(Especially like my country near equator and living near the sea), also advanced technology which make older devices obsolete too. A good example like batteries on phones, vehicles or computer will eventually lose their own ability to hold charge, that is why products all have their expiration dates.

I hope these explained your curiosity on decrease lifespan on products (n_n) /

Thank you for the thorough explanation, It has indeed satisfied my curiosity!

Didn't think that moving in and out from hot and humid environments to air-con room over time could lead to the accumulation vapor and might short something.

Also it seem like your suggestion is pretty spot on the wiring of the eDP cable seem to be damage. Consider the power didn't complete connection to the LCD display.

The damage might be a result from me opening and closing the super tightly hinge over 8 long years and I occasionally opening the case to clean out dust as well.

Wish you have a wonderful day~! (οΌΎβ–½οΌΎ)/ 🍌

Its on cable only and temp doesnt matter.
also was thinking about screen swap

Does Acer not have proper support for this? They might say hey send it over, we will look at it and replace stuff.

In my opinion this sort of stuff usually looks bad, hardware related and since it's a laptop not easy to fix.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

....I might have been a little short-tempered when talking with their support staffs πŸ˜….

They kept insisting on making me reinstalling all the drivers again and again, and

then they even suggested to reformatting and installing Windows 11.

The thing is, for my model ACER driver page doesn't even have support for Windows 11.

So, we went back and forth for almost a week by now. I've pretty much given up on talking to them. 😹

So I decided to figure it out on my own for now, gathering information about the prices of various components as much as possible.

My plan is to visit a local IT workshop for repairs later if I can't seem to fix it myself and

just to make sure I'm not blindsided by up scaling too much of the price. πŸ™€

Sorry for long rant lol Wish you a wonderful day ahead Lugum~ πŸ“

Did windows update your graphics driver? I'd uninstall all graphics drivers then reinstall the newest ones from nvidia.

Nope I install Windows 10 LTSC version so it doesn't force me to update,

and I did try to reinstall all the driver once from the ACER driver page itself

As well as try the newest version for my intel and nvidia doesn't seem to be the cause sadly 😹

Thanks for your input though, wish you a blessed and beautiful day ahead 🍎

I think you can rule out software & driver related issues by just checking if the problem exists when you are in the BIOS menu. Shut down your laptop, then turn it back on and press the appropriate key to enter setup (often ESC, DEL, F2, F10, or other F buttons; use the external monitor to see the startup message). If the monitor doesn't work in the BIOS then go with the above suggestions of reconnecting the monitor cable at both ends.

Also related to your difficulties with Acer support call them again and for any troubleshooting steps you aren't willing to do, say you already did it based on a directions from your previous calls to support. If they want to remotely connect to the PC to verify, say it doesn't have internet access and you had to transfer drivers and other files to it from another machine with USB. They have a script they have to follow before they can escalate the call to someone who can actually help you, so just play along and don't get frustrated.

Thanks for suggestion didn't think of that I guess just checking into BIOS is already enough tell huh.
Sadly it didn't work so it pretty much rules out software at the moment : )

I kinda understand them following script consider I work in call center for a time.
l guess getting old kinda wear down my patience a bit these day XD
Thanks you for comment I will try it again tomorrow, and wish you a wonderful day πŸ“

It seems to me as an issue with the LCD matrix power supply. Considering the temperature correlation it could be dying capacitors in the PSU. Anyway I'd bring it to a repair service, it's hard to troubleshoot such things without equipment.

My laptop had a similar issue last year.
Contrary to your situation, Flickering of my screen only appears when brightness is over 20%, a slight heat will exacerbate the problem. After visiting a local repair service, it was the fuse for LCD power supply. That fuse burnt out, causing both the value of resistance and the partial voltage increased, resulting in insufficient LCD power supply voltage and screen flickering. During the repair, I saw that the multimeter showed a resistance value of 50Ξ© (the normal value should be 0Ξ©)
Based on your description(external display works and temperature related), I feel it may also be a screen power supply issue.

Thank you for sharing your experience very informative. It give me idea to borrow a multimeter from a co-worker and investigate the issue myself. It does indeed appear to be a power supply problem. As you suggest I started by testing the eDP cable in the motherboard end it supplying the correct voltage. However at the display inverter end, one power pin seems to be missing 19V. So thank you for suggestion it help me to the right track. this weekend I'll try to check on the rest of the component on the inverter for further potential damage.

Wish you a best of day going onward 🍎

i had this issue before , the piece of hardware that cause this is the cable that link to motherboard to the screen lcd due to opening the laptop and closing it over the years that cable start losing it shape . so before trying anything you should start with changing this one

edit : the break happen in the middle of that cable where it cross over with that fold part of the laptop and you dont notice it by eye cause that cable is covered

Comment has been collapsed.

Dang that could be the root of the issue, the hinges are tighten pretty well and stiff that might explain it. The cable could indeed be damaged, consider one power pin not making a complete connection to the laptop display inverter. However, I'll need to inspect for any additional damage before making a final decision. Thanks for sharing and a good day to you sir πŸ₯

I had this issue with my old macbook pro. Had 16GB RAM in it. 8+8. Anyway, turns out, it was one of the RAM slots that was the issue. I took one out at a time to see which one. It still runs perfectly on 8GB in one slot and I still use it for my old design software, even if I have a new machine now.

It could be any number of things of course. Just putting that out there.
