You don't have to use it, particularly for this game. Most of the games I own on Desura I can download the DRM-Free installers directly.
(Note: I do agree the actual client sucks, not in the least because it crashes on me all the time)

Just to note. This is included on the Not On Steam sale page and listed as having a Steam key included if it is Greenlit. It also makes note of being on there, on Desura and on Steam (Where the developer even confirmed it). Just an added bonus.
