The videogame is set in the same universe as the comics; the TV series is a different interpreation of the comic's storyline.
I would recommend reading the comics instead, I like them way more than the TV series; not because of the plot or anything, it's just that the series feels very amateur and cheap.

Stargate is still after 16 years my favourite series, though Game of Thrones is very serious competition.
Other than that: Breaking Bad, Continuum, Downton Abbey (Superb series), Doctor Who (The 2005 reboot), Falling Skies, Person of Interest, Elementary, Sherlock
And I'm sure I could give you more names, but these are the best I've seen.

If you're into "older stuff," try the "I Love Lucy Show" for comedy.

Battlestar Galactica, but don't blame me when you end up missing work/school because of it.
Edit: Oh, and my gf has got me into the BBC Sherlock Holmes-- definitely worth checking out!
