Hello again,

I just bought a Panasonic RP-HX350 today. It is comfortable enough and bass is good compared to my old Phillips SHP1900. The problem is sound clearness.

Sound was crystal clear even on my old budget headphones. But Panasonic one is either hoarse or dull. In-game sounds are also bad like this. Done some tests before opening this topic, here is a list:

  • Checked out the jack if it is inserted correctly to laptop (it was plugged in properly)
  • Used AIMP2 and AIMP3, played with and without equalizer and tried pre-defined EQ presets. Tried all of combinations with same uncompressed songs. (conclusion: i couldn't find an optimum setting)
  • Just in case, i used old headphones and new ones to compare. Same song, same settings. (Old one is clear and my ears are in good condition)
  • My ears are wide, you might know. So, tried to simulate if the earshells (earcups) wouldn't cover and put pressure on ears too much for noise isolation feature. Especially it feels like my ears are grumbling while i'm not listening anything. Kind of seashell effect? (conclusion: slightly improved clearness, probably the problem is this)
  • Found a software named "SRS Premium HD" which came with sound card drivers and pre-installed itself. I made some adjustment, even disabled it. (conclusion: with this software, sound is better)
  • Tried to listen same song on my Xperia M, with Walkman application (ClearAudio+ and ClearBass is off). Singer's sound was better than PC, sound isn't hoarse anymore. Hmmm...

Can you help me about this situation? I might be skipping some details about it.

Btw, here is your giveaway.

Try a clean test, without any EQ turned on or other additional sound distortion. Try the same earphones on different devices and see if they perform the same way. Compare your previous earphones with your new ones on the same songs, quality and player. Also double check your jack is plugged in all the way down, I know it might sound like a retarded advice, but sometimes a little more push or different positioning of the cable is needed and at neglected at first.

If your headphones perform really bad in the same conditions your previous ones performed much better, you might have a defective pair. Try contacting customer service of the shop you bought them from or Panasonic directly and see what they'll tell you.

Edit: And thanks for the giveaway.

Edit 2: Consider your earphones might need some burning in to sound as they should. Or, just the sound quality of that particular model is bad. Unless they sound really awful and unlistenable, in which case proceed with contacting customer service to claim you have a defective pair.

It seems like i forgot to mention some of your recommendations as well. I already did turn off the EQ and tried the old one on the same song just in case. I'll add them to original post. Jack is also OK.

Actually i'm not sure if the pair is defective or is it kind of "oh, new headphones; that make me feel much more different" situation. It's not that bad but sound isn't so clean neither. I mean, the sound make me feel like getting lost in bass. Or, the main reason is earcups put pressure on my ears a lot; so, it make an effect like you put a seashell on your ear.

Burning in, right? Hmm... i'll consider this method as well but later.

I'll try this on other devices such as Nintendo 3DS and my Android phone. This is another good idea.

Thank you for your time.

I always manage to fuck up the cable near the USB port so I don't invest too much in headphones. I probably need wireless...

No idea, if sounds really bad and you think would be sound better conntact with the RMA department in the store you bought it and try luck. Maybe its factory problem.

Not really bad but it is kind of... seashell effect maybe. Or kind of "i bought a new pairs of glasses but it is weird".

Check the jack of the new headphones and the old ones'. It may have a different number of "lines" (different number of channels), that may be your problem. I have a pair of headphones from a Nokia 5800XM which don't work well (they have that sort of a seashell echo effect) with other devices due to a different layout of the channels.

i suggest exchanging them. might be the headset you bought was defective. if the 2nd pair sound just as bad, then return it altogether & get a better pair of headphones. personally, id save some money & get some headphones that are good for gaming. you can usually purchase some really great headphones for $79 or more depending on what you buy.

i listened to HyperX at PAX & i thought the sound was pretty good for $59 there. they had it on sale from being regular $79 at amazon. sounded great with music & games. i own a more expensive pair of headphones but i was looking for some cheap headphones for my cousin, who has a very limited budget.

This one looks good i guess. I don't know yet but the earcups seems wide as well. Only cons. is i can't dare to order something from outside, since my two cargos are still missing (7 months have passed) from United Kingdom and Hong Kong.

Also, i just poured 100 bucks into this, i guess i have to talk with store if i can change this one or with the Panasonic (i couldn't find the model on their support site though).

edit: btw, you might want to delete that reference part in your amazon link. Probably that's not your fault but you know, any kind of ref link isn't allowed in SG.

thanks for the heads up. i didnt even realize that they had reference links on Amazon or that my link that i passed onto you was a reference link. appreciate it. hope you are able to fix your set or at least find one that works. cheers!

the ear cups on the HyperX are wide.

i personally have a pair of V-moda LP2s & love them. they are attractive, well built, music & gaming sounds excellent, but they are expensive. i switched out the ear cups in mine (since they started wearing out due to my bolts for plugs, rubbing on them too much over time), for their XL ear cups that you can pop out & replace & had to purchase their mic on the side for mine. but i liked that they have a detachable jack. cause i tend to wear my cord out & hate purchasing a new set of earphones, just for that reason. they also have a lifetime warranty after their 1 or 2 year warranty are up (depending on which headset you purchase). if your headset becomes overused or damaged/broken, you get 50% for your next pair of V-modas.

Maybe, according to this review, it seems that it's how they work: http://www.head-fi.org/t/691569/new-headphones-sighted-from-panasonic-hx250-hx350-and-hx550

"(...)Definitely for music lovers who like high beats (pop, dance, hip-hop, techno) and rock musics, but not for singer-minded listeners. For audiophile headfi, stay way.(...)"

If he is right about this comment, i have to change this one. Especially a singer's voice is really bad compared to my old headphones. But, the instrumental ones has a dullness as well. I don't know, there is a problem here for sure.

Don't know the model. Searched a bit but found no problem.
To be sure if it's a problem with the model or with (specifically) your's, I would make a test with two headphones of the same model.
Am I suggesting that you should buy another one, when you're not even sure it's a good model?? Hell, no!!!
Take a mp3-player to an electronics store (they must sell this model, of course) and ask to test this model.
So you can check one source of sound in two (exact model) headphones. So you should have an idea if your model came broke.
Hope it helps.

That's also a good idea. I don't need to search for another place since there is a unboxed version of my model in that store. Thank you, definitely, i'll try that tomorrow.

Sound Engineer here,

First of all test the frequency transmission of your headphone. The range of your model is 9Hz to 25 Khz, so just search "9Hz test" and "25Khz test" on youtube and check if you can hear a thing. If not then your headphone is faulty and you should take it back to the store.

Also your HF has quite a bit of impedance (33 Ohm). In some rare cases your HF just simply doesn't get enough "juice". I'm talking about a power hungry system with onboard audio interface drawing power from the main power supply. I use an external audio interface with its own PSU so I never had such a problem.

I would also check the quality of the sound source, the problem might be simply a crappy sound quality which wasn't that much noticeable when using a crappy(er) headphone.

I wouldn't tinker with the EQ settings if you don't know what you're doing, 99% of daily use sounds are already properly mixed and they don't need any enhancements, also throw the SRS HD outta window, it's a ridiculously bad software.

I thought a normal man could hear sounds from about 16Hz to 20KHz. How is he supposed to hear sounds that aren't in the normal human ear range?

I heard 9Hz one. But 25kHz wasn't there ^^

I heard 9Hz one. I couldn't hear 25 kHz but i don't know if it exceeded my hearing limit or not.

There is nothing bad about sound quality. I just used same FLAC files on Xperia M; sound was great with a custom EQ; bass was ok, singer's sound was OK. Probably that SRS thingy and sound drivers causes this (i'll install another driver from Toshiba's website).

I'm not sure if EQ is a serious business that much. I mean, i know how a sound works and i have a musical ear as well, so... It shouldn't be perfect on values and ratios imho. Time by time, even an average person can say the difference what sounds right or not, right?

I'm pretty sure it is about my laptop since Xperia M experience was great. Software or hardware kind of problem... I hope it is software (i mean driver) related or else, i have to buy the old one again and let the Panasonic rot in the dusty shelf (since my ear lobes couldn't like this one so much too especially because of the seashell effect).

Thank you for your info. Please share more opinions if you consider it necessary.

Your Panasonic is probably not defective, it just does not have very strong mids, which is why ClearAudio+ (which boosts the mids) on the phone makes it sound a lot nicer. You can set the equaliser on your laptop with stronger mids and turn off the SRS, since it is known to make higher quality headphones sound worse.

BTW I have the Xperia SP with the Walkman app and I have turned off the Clear Bass, equaliser and ClearAudio+. Sounds way better that way for me, but as I said, it's different for you.

Actually i turned off ClearAudio+ to reach that clearness. ClearBass is on 0 as well.

I already got rid of SRS and installed new drivers but i still didn't try them yet.
