Easy question for me but I am not really sure if I am allowed to say that. I hope internet is anonymous enough and I won't get beaten:
Skyrim - I loved Oblivion, played Morrowind aswell so when Skyrim came I was really happy.. until I spent my first few hours in it. Totally disapointed by graphics and all that squares and rectangles everywhere (I blame consoles for that), more that terrible inventory managment, skill trees were kinda weird, landscape boring and dungeons even worse. Oblivion - dungeons with atmosphere and interesting ministories. Skyrim - all dungeons looks like copies.
I came back times and gave it 3 more chances but always ended by uninstaling after an hour or so.

I could actually include the entire Elder Scrolls series on my list -- Morrowind and Oblivion at least, I don't know about Skyrim since I've never played it (I figure it's more of what made people love the series).
Oblivion looked great (well, except for the faces...) and had a nice atmosphere, and the first few hours are OK, but it's so hollow and repetitive. It felt like a single player MMORPG. I never bothered to finish the main quest. I tried two more times after that because of those first hours, but I never could get through it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Almost exactly the feelings I had for Skyrim. Oblivion might not be the best game. I probably liked it because it was something new. Looked great, had nice ambient music, interesting dungeon crawling, housing system where you could arrange all the loot (yep, my house full of skulls looked awsome)... single-player MMO at times when I had no internet connection. That's probably the reason. When Skyrim came all these things were not new or interesting anymore and they were not really well implemented.

I found the dungeons to feel a lot more copy-pasted in Oblivion than in any of the other TES games. They seem to have built their dungeons out of larger "chunks" and put less clutter objects than in Skyrim, which made it, to me at least, very obvious when they re-used pieces. Morrowind seem to have had more pieces they built their dungeons from, or at least less distinct pieces, making it less noticeable when something to re-used (probably the later).

I found Skryim to generally have better end-dungeon encounters, although the way they looped back on themselves were a bit too obvious, while in Oblivion everything just felt ctrl+c/ctrl+v, and the enemy scaling, good grief, it was the most obvious in the entire series. Even Daggerfall did enemy scaling better.
Comment has been collapsed.
Enemy scaling - yes, totally agreed on that. Still funny to see such contradicting opinions. All in good manners. I can actually understand that. When I tried Borderlands 2 for the first time I was seriously disapointed... and then few years later I spent hundreds of hours with it :)

Felt exactly like that with Fallout NV, but not Skyrim. Can't figure out why, though. It's like, Fallout New Vegas felt really empty and I can walk for hours without really getting anywhere. In Skyrim though, I can play for hours and I'm always discovering something new to do/find.

Deponia: Illogical puzzles, and I disliked the main character. "Might" give it another shot at some point, but for now, nope.
The Legend of Zelda. Ocarina of time: Early 3D cameras + me = frustration. I did beat the game, and it had its strong sides, but overall, I found the bad to outweigh the good.
Eador: genesis. I kept hearing people say that this was a great strategy game, but it's just too darn slow.
Command & Conquer: Generals. A lot of people say that this is one of their favourite RTS games. Personally I found the super weapons to be too powerful, the factions to be boring to play and the story in the campaign to be more stupid than campy/goofy (which is how I would describe the storylines in the other C&C games, in particular the RA series)
King's Quest 1-3. Dead ends, annoying puzzles, lack of logic, random events that have to trigger for you to be able to progress, gnomes stealing your important items making it impossible for you to progress and a stupid bridge you can only pass over 3 times. I don't just dislike KQ, I hate it.
Civilization 3: I like every Civ game I've played. Every civ game except for 3.
Counter Strike, any of them: These games are just not for me. They're too "realistic" to work for me when I'm having an itch for a dumb shooter, and not realistic enough for them to work for me when I have an itch for a smart shooter.
TES: Oblivion: The only TES game I've got so bored with that I just stopped playing. Usually I stop playing because I either reach some goal I've set for myself, or because I get frustrated with the amount of bugs, but Oblivion was just boring.
A lot of this comes down to the main story just being especially bland, and very poorly made for an open world game (they always keep telling you how important it is that you hurry to the next spot. But you're never in a hurry), the amount of obviously re-used areas (they seem to have made very few pieces for dungeon construction, which creates a lot of repetition, and which made them the least "immersive" as I just went "hey, that was the piece from that dungeon, and that was the piece from that dungeon" when I played. Morrowind & Skyrim was far better at masking this, and with Daggerfall you were distracted by all the bugs) and a more noticeable level scaling (all main TES games level-scale, Oblivion just did it in the most obvious and bad way).
Oh, and the voice acting. let's not forget the voice acting. It would have been better to NOT have any voice acting and instead re-use that terrible dialogue system from Morrowind.
X-com: Enemy Unknown/UFO: The first X-com. I did not like it. Nor did I like Terror from the Deep, and I found Apocalypse to be alright not but not great. Here it came down to squad size. For games where you've got that amount of controls over your troopers, I prefer smaller squads (think Jagged Alliance 2), otherwise I tend to end up getting a bit bored when moving my troops, and towards the end of my turn I just end up shoving my guys forward. Basically, X-com just hits a bad spot for me.
Comment has been collapsed.
Have you ever played the modern XCOM: Enemy Unknown? I had a hard time getting into the original because it's just too old school now (a problem I have with more of the "classic games" I never got to play when they were actually classics), but the "remake" I liked just fine.
Comment has been collapsed.
I have a hard time nailing down exactly what's wrong with Civ 3. I guess it's just a lot of smaller things adding up. Building cities felt less enjoyable, the tech tree did not feel as rewarding, that sort of stuff.
Civ 2 needs a specific video codec to run, that used to come with older versions of Windows, but nowadays needs to be downloaded separately.

I'm sure there are lots more but, from memory:

I don't get the need of:
SIMS. Seriously, tried to play it but got bored after a few hours. If I wanted to manage the ordinary life of someone, I would start for living mine. I don't understand why people loves this kind of games.
Every PES or FIFA. Same as before, if I would want to play football, I would rather go outside and do it myself, better graphics and gameplay, and best of all, no bugs or glitchs, also good for your health.

Witcher 3: Never liked the fight mechanic and the story never really pulled me in like the Elder Scrolls series do.
DOTA 2: Just to elitist and very unfriendly and toxic for new players, also not a big fan of MOBA's as a whole other than HotS.

Mario - I honestly don't know a single Mario game title, so I'm just saying it like that. Any game that has featured Mario has been terrible.
Pokémon - Which one you ask and I answer "the entire franchise." That sort of combat isn't my thing, and all the games just seem to have the same uninteresting reused plot only with different creatures. Doesn't help that they always release two versions of the same game, practically forcing you to buy two games if you want to collect all the pokémon.
Undertale - Sure there were some funny moments in there and the idea was interesting, but it wasn't as great as everyone kept insisting it was. In some points it tried way too hard to be quirky, which just made it cringeworthy.
X-COM - Snoozefest, I can't even begin to imagine putting tens of hours into this one.

Mario's been in a lot of games, I'm not sure it's humanly possible to dismiss all of them. If you don't like Yoshi's Island for any other reason than "the art style isn't my thing", I can't help you, you have no soul. (Super Mario World is also great though.)

Ok I'll go with it..
Most hated high scoring games.. piano tile.. If there's a scale it should be measured in respect of me.. because of my tiny hands/fingers.. don't count trump
You went with high scoring not high rated... I loved limbo.. but Inside not so much

BRAID IS HORRIBLE THANK YOU
It isn't fun, in the slightest. The platforming is a terrible. I don't care how unique or clever people consider it, I can't enjoy a platformer if the platforming itself is complete garbage.
Comment has been collapsed.
I know the puzzles are the point, but the gaming is on a platform system that is mechanically actually godawful. I know the game gets better, but at no point could I enjoy it, because I found the basic movement miserable.
Comment has been collapsed.
We should start a Braid hater fanclub, because we're in full agreement. "But it's really a puzzle game" just leaves me screaming "THEN DON'T PUT IN SHITTY PLATFORMING". Or, you know, some pretentious story that has squat to do with the game because having nothing to do with the game is deep.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's the classic "progress in the game so you get your story reward" setup. Except I didn't find it to be much of a reward at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm not suggesting the game should be reworked. I'm suggesting that what it is just doesn't work. Yes, it's an inseparable part -- so much the worse for the whole.
Comment has been collapsed.
Which brings us back to my comment, which is that I hate it because the platforming is awful. So yes, if the platforming is an inseparable part of the puzzle design, then the fact that its a "puzzle" game doesn't even remotely start to make the bad platforming irrelevant.

I only agree with the last sentence. It's true that To the Moon really only works as well as it does because of the framing, but it still got me.
Comment has been collapsed.
One of the worst ways to go into any game is expecting it to be good because everyone told you so, though. I've put off playing some games for years (or even indefinitely) because of that, since about the only way it can end is disappointment.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree that To The Moon was overrated, but from kinda different reasons.
The story wasn't that bad, but the narration was absolutely rubbish (why after every scene main characters had to explain exactly what had just happened? I SAW WITH MY VERY EYES WHAT HAD JUST HAPPENED, STOP TREATING ME LIKE A MORON), the "humoristic" bits were painfully unfunny, the art direction did not exist, and the gameplay was just trash. I think that the game was not a very good medium to tell that story, it would work better as a novel, a film, or even as a goddamn podcast
Comment has been collapsed.
Can't believe I forgot this one from my own list. To the Moon wasn't moving in the slightest, it only managed to annoy me because the old man's actions made no sense.

+1 for Alien: Isolation. I am a HUGE fan of the Aliens the movie. I forced myself to finish this boring tedious walking simulator. It was a different type of horror (complete un-fun time wasting) than I was expecting.

Batman related stuff
OK, since the Arkham series is one of my personal favorites (though I really wish Knight had ended it better), I'm going to have to ask you to elaborate. Do you just hate Batman as a character so it doesn't matter what the game is?
Comment has been collapsed.
Was wondering if I should actually put it on the list but since I really dislike everything Batman-related I just couldn't resist :D. But to be completely honest I just tried Batman AA and Batman AC a bit but couldn't enjoy it because I can't seem to be entertained with the Batman universe (or anything DC and Marvel related) so the games might be good, just not for me...
So, long story short, yeah it's Batmans fault :D.

If it had been re-skinned as something else I would have enjoyed it ;). Journey to Silius from SunSoft however was pretty awesome!

Yes! The music is absolutely fantastic :)! I remember how tough this game was, and the final boss was sadly really not that memorable (so much that I even had to look him up). Now that you've mentioned it, he really does look like the terminator :D.

That's fine. I would have honestly been more surprised if you did like Batman but not the games for some reason, which is why I asked.

I might give them a crack someday, when I run out of games to play :S.

That's a cute way of saying "never" for people who own 5,748 games...

I guess...I should have probably said "when I run out of games I WANT to play", because that would probably narrow the games count to less than 100 ^^.

Although Origins had a lot of faults (conceptually and literally, in the form of some godawful bugs), I've found it better in retrospect now that Knight has come and gone and failed to be the ultimate finale. If nothing else, I wouldn't want to miss the Deathstroke and Shiva fights (especially the latter in Initiation), for all the bitching and moaning people do about how hard Deathstroke is.
You can say AO and AK shouldn't have existed, but there would have definitely been room for a follow-up game so it would be a proper trilogy. Knight wasn't quite there.

I think you're right, I'll have to edit my post to note that I dislike newer Batman games, since I played the NES one and it wasn't bad, quite fun actually...and I developed a dislike for Batman in the recent 15 years or so...
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh how true this is, and honestly the whole vibe of the game was so depressing really....and missions were a chore, you didn't want to do. I remember the good old days of GTA III and Vice City...
Still waiting to get my hands on GTA V, been holding off for now since 4 and it's expansions were so disappointing. Plus I've had more fun with the Saints Row and Just Cause franchise.

undertale - it's just not my style. don't like the artwork, the chars, the music, the humor...
any moba - can't feel it.
fallout 4 - super boring
kane and lynch games... boring
mafia 2 - the open world feels so empty, it's a mess
rage - good game but then the end was so abrupt
Comment has been collapsed.
maybe. solo was a nightmare. but i loved the look of it. felt like a casper noé movie
Comment has been collapsed.
Rage was majorly disappointing because of the ending.
I don't mind a game with very little plot, like most of Id's other games. But Rage dropped the ball about 2/3 the way through in terms of the story.
Also I don't remember Kane and Lynch being critically acclaimed.

+1 for Mafia 2. I had to stop playing this terrible waste of time. "Let's make a GTA knockoff, but instead of making it fun like Saints Row, let's make it boring, repetitive, and horribly bad."

The binding of Isaac is the most ugly, boring game I have ever seen.
Gone Home was the biggest disappointment, not the worst game. It should have been right up my alley as in every possible list of games I like, it is highly recommended, at least in the top 5. I did not hate it but I definitely did not like it either.
Comment has been collapsed.
Amnesia (the horror game, not the VN, I loved that one). I absolutely hate the gameplay. I don't mind having to run from enemies instead of killing them but the hide-and-seek sequences were absolutely awful, and the whole matchbox thing brings absolutely nothing but tedium to the game. It didn't help that I found that game about as scary as a basket full of puppies.
Assassin's Creed 2. Couldn't stand Ezio. Boring gameplay (which is weird since I liked it in the first game, and it's basically the same in the second one).
Oblivion. Terrible level design, basically no plot, bad writing all over the place, and characters worthy of uncanny valley awards around every corner.
Most FPS, RTS, MOBAs, competitive stuff in general. Just not my kind of thing.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, it's weird that you like AC1 but not AC2. I played both but definitely enjoyed AC2 more. It's more of the same, but better executed and with more variation. Also, can't go wrong with Renaissance Italy as a setting.
Also, CURSE THE CHRISTIAN KING AND HIS ARMY OF INFIDELS!

Fallout 4, Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, every freaking game from Bethesda - super boring, empty worlds, crapload of bugs, literally every time I start Bethesda title I immediately regret it. It's important to keep in mind that I'm talking only about titles that Bethesda actually developed, not published, because Doom is perfect.

Party Hard is tedious as hell. After you use all the special objects you still have several dozens of people to kill one-by-one with a knife, waiting for the police to arrive and go.
.... I think I have to agree. I don't know what I expected from the game, but it repeatedly ended up as a "stab someone, let them find the body, don't get suspicious, repeat" loop for like 10 minutes to finish a lavel.

I didn't know that Rock of Ages was popular, but agree with you that it shouldn't have been. Couldn't find much anything to like about it.

i know BF3 is good, its just that the lightning effects, tough great, they screw up clarity on the game, at least for me, i had to blink a couple of times everytime i look trough the scope cause i was blinded for a sec. And getting used to more arcade type shooters doesnt help, cant hit a damm moving target with a sniper rifle. You know....... physics lol.
Good game, just not for me.

Have there ever been games that are loved by the public at large (reviewed highly and praised by both critics and users) that you just didn't like at all? If so, why?
I'll start us off...
So, any jewels in the crown of gaming you didn't like? Remember, it's not just bitching about games you don't like, but games that are widely seen as great that you don't like.
