Its a shame, guess we'll try to see it next time.

I'm going to check the weather, see if I can see it at sunrise.

Ironically, the next day was perfect weather for me. I shouldn't stare at the sun too long.

Hmm need the appropriate glasses, whatever they are called :3
Edit : Actually just checked and it's going to be quite difficult to see from here. It will be quite low in the sky and a bit after the sunrise. I'll have to settle with the stream as well ;<

if you want to see it, you will indeed need the appropriate glasses.
or when there are enough clouds in front of the sun you look directly in to the sun
(this advice is at your own risk, writer can not be accountable for any damages that may occur) :)

There are methods for watching it that don't require glasses or filters; you just can't look at it directly. Check out http://venustransit.nasa.gov/2012/transit/viewing.php and see if you can use any of the projection methods.

Thank you, I'll check it out in case I can't find them :)

Sorry, didn't realize the URL didn't become a link, because it did for me (could be a browser add-on). You might want to see if there's an organized event somewhere near your area, because they'd probably have the appropriate glasses and/or provide other means to safely view the transit. The event closest to me, and I attended, did.

Unfortunately, as I mentioned on my edit above it will be quite difficult to spot since it will take place close to sunrise which will make it be quite low on the sky, thus quite hard to watch from here unless I can travel outside the city. Thank you for the info though!

Looks like I'm going to miss it as it's forecasted to be cloudy (nothing new) at 5am when it comes visible here. I saw the 2004 transit so I wont' be too disappointed in missing it. :-)

b this is the LAST ONE. in our or maybe our kids lifetimes

Yes, given the span of 105 of 121 years between Venus transits and an average lifespan of what, about 80 years?, there's a good probability that one generation will miss this event completely. For people seeing it now, their children probably won't, but their grandchildren probably will.
Unfortunately for me, I don't remember the 2004 one. I think I was too busy finishing my PhD to worry about much else at the time. It's nice to see this one, but it would have been better if I didn't have to use video feeds to do so.

live feed is boring so far, gonna go see if i can see from my yard
Edit: dam, the sun is setting behind all the trees, and tehres some clouds around it. :(
can you see venus with the naked eye?

Right now while it's crossing the Sun, no, don't look at it without proper protection. You need protection to view the Sun. But in general, yes -- if Venus is up in the night sky, it should look like a bright star in the sky. You can probably check any sort of app or web site that shows you what's up in the night sky on a certain day and time, and know if Venus is visible. If it is, go out and take a look.

Yeah, i was asking if its visible on a general day.
this live stream is pretty boring though. i thought it would look more like a solar eclipse but doesnt look like it will

Here's a close up view of the start of the transit :-)

No, it won't, though the basic alignment and such is the same for transits and eclipses. Venus is far too small (in apparent size) to cover the entire Sun the way that the Moon does in a solar eclipse. You'll see basically a small dark dot move across the face of the Sun in this transit. But it's kind of luck that the Moon covers the Sun. There's no real reason that the apparent size of the Moon should be the same as the apparent size of the Sun. We're fortunate that solar eclipses appear the way they do.

Yeah, New Zealand is covered in fucking cloud. Would have been nice to see it, but I'm more concerned as to whether my house is going to float away right now.

Clouds suck. Would've been a great day w/o clouds.

Awesome, next door neighbour's tree came down and thwacked the roof of my office, breaking off the top of the tree and smendling my gutter. Roof seems ok, but damn that was a massive bang.
