To many games, not enough money D:
Odysseyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Co-op play is super fun, definitely adds another dimension.

Well, different people have different opinions, I guess. I found the game boring as a whole, especially as a second player. I mean it's a cool and different idea, but I was expecting some parts to be challenging, I guess. Though I got bored after close to 300 moons and the fest fight with Bowser... (Especially after BotW, moons just felt like easier to find Korok seeds...)
I personally haven't gotten much play time out of Mario Kart either, though, since I don't play it by myself, and played a lot of the Switch version before, but the new battle mode is crazy fun, imo.
I really love Sniperclips, there are some fun puzzles, co-op is great, super cute style, and fun modes for when you want to go against each other or just take a break from puzzles.
There's quite a few nice indie games on the eShop for much cheaper, too. Party Golf is one example that my family loves, though it is more fun with more people.

and player 2 would be very bored.
I found the co-op in Galaxy fun enough (much more than single player, at that), and that was just you being able to collect things for Mario and give him a second jump boost. (Odyssey is an expansion of the same system, but provides the secondary player with more interaction options.) Of course, since the primary player didn't have as much to focus on, play moved faster than in single-player, so you got to experience the game more smoothly- so that likely contributed to it feeling a more agreeable experience than the single player.
For support-role co-op, an important thing to realize is that you get to immerse yourself in the gameplay just as much as the primary player [rather like everyone clustering around one player playing a horror game]. Of course, if the primary player isn't responsive to your input on progression (ie, ignoring your observations and suggestions), or if you hate watching games or games with simple mechanics, it may not be an appreciable experience.
A simple way to think of it may be, "Do I like playing a medic in games?"; If either of you is fine with that kind of role, you're functioning pretty similarly in other support-role games (ie, following around the primary player and assisting them), so other games with such gameplay should appeal (or not) in a similar fashion.

Personally, I enjoy such [medic-style] roles a lot- it gives me more time to focus on and share in what my partner is doing, thus making the co-op a lot more personal, and allowing us to banter throughout the experience with more ease (as we're both equally aware of what's going on in any part of the game).
I mean, any single-screen co-op game offers a degree of shared focus, and puzzle co-op games (such as Trine or Ibb & Obb) force a mutual focus by making you work together to solve puzzles- but more generally co-op modes tend to be a bit more hands off in how much you directly contribute to a teammate's gameplay experience (Take Dead Space 3: In that, my partner and I split up all the time and did fine, and even when we were fighting off waves or running from bosses, our contributions to one another mostly involved reviving a downed partner. Good, fun co-op game, but the co-op itself detracted from socialization rather than contributing to it).
With a game like Mario, you end up hitting all three boxes- you've got a "medic" role, you've got a single screen, and you've got puzzle elements to enjoy figuring out together.
In short, even if it DOES end up being a bit lackluster in mechanics (and from what I've seen, you actually can do plenty as cappy), you should be able to easily compensate for that with the increase in the elements that contribute to making it a more social gameplay experience.

The most fun part I had in co-op was capturing people right before they went to do a jump or something to mess with them, although it may have just been who I was playing with...

I'll say one thing about Odyssey: it may be a collectathon platformer, but until you beat the game, play it like one of the linear installments (like 3D Land and 3D World). If you start off trying to explore the entirety of the levels for 100% completion, you'll just be frustrated at how certain moons seem impossible to find, then you'll be disappointed when the game goes "hey, we added a bunch more moons to the levels that weren't there before. Hooray for reused content!"
I haven't played Mario Kart 8, though, so I can't say anything about that game.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not really a fan of collectathon's which is another reason we haven't bought it already. I enjoy my Mario games more for the platforming then collecting. I think it'll be fun regardless though. If we buy it, we'll make sure to go through it linear first.

Definitely why I was turned off by Mario 64, after a while of playing it. Galaxy had much smoother and interesting stage progression than 64 (imo), and the co-op added even more to it, to the point where I was finally able to really appreciate a 3D Mario game. Odyssey seems to advance on both the gameplay and co-op concepts rather appealingly. As annoying as collectathons are, being able to puzzle out how to get out collectibles with a partner isn't sucky, especially if both of you aren't obsessively completionistic about it [thus detracting from core gameplay flow].
I think this co-op play video does a good job of showing the kind of silly yet constructive conversation you can have while playing.

Yeah, I've been wanting to find a game like Super Mario Sunshine on Gamecube. You do have to collect in the game but it has pretty difficult platforming and boss battles throughout that adds a challenge and feels rewarding.I was worried Odyssey would just be collecting without that challenge. I'll check out the video, thanks!

Co-op seems a bit underdeveloped so far, as well- with just that one linked, rather basic wave-survival mode existing. As such, you'd theoretically still mostly be playing it for the online team pvp.

Go with Mario Kart 8 for the local and online multiplayer.
Plus you already have a single player focused game in Breath of the Wild.

I have been playing both recently in one of my friends switch
I vote for Odyssey because its pretty fun and I prefer games with a story and platformers
and Mario Kart at the beggining is pretty fun but after a lot of playing it gets a little boring since its always the same and it does not have any story
Also I think Odyssey is a must play and Mario Kart is just as all the previous Mario Kart games

And they're bringing Hyrule Warriors to Switch. :3

I played Splatoon 2 at a gaming event and it was a lot of fun. Don't be put off by the child like graphics. I was bouncing around my seat with how much fun it was!
I have been debating whether or not to get a graphics card or a switch. Been paid more than I think those month!

If you want my opinion, the Switch has been a worthy investment so far. The graphics look great, you can take it on the go, and it's especially fun if you have someone to play it with. I've only played Breath of the Wild so far but it is as good as the reviews say. Plus I think it compliments the PC well. For some reason it's just really fun to play PC games and then move on to the Switch after :)
I didn't know much about Splatoon until robilar5500 mentioned it to me. It looks like a lot of fun but it sounds like we won't be able to play it locally :(

You're convincing me to get it. Even just to take it in bed at night would be great after PC gaming like you said. I travel almost daily so it would be great on trains also. I'm really considering it!
Oh Dawn! I didn't know that. Well another one was Fire Emblem Warriors! Man that game was so much fun. I felt so badass hacking and slashing through enemies. It is a Japanese game so I don't know how you feel about that. Seems like a marmite thing now a days :(

But Hyrule Warriors is coming to Switch, too, so I think if you are a bigger fan of Zelda then Fire Emblem you might be better with that.

Happy Cakeday!
I'll start off by saying my three most played games on Switch so far, Disgaea 5 (Though I don't own it, but my library has it), BotW, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (another library one). My sister got Odyssey for her birthday (she chose that over ARMS) and has played for a grand total of an hour or so, when she played ARMS from the library at least that long, lol. I've played about 10 or so hours of Odyssey and I personally don't get what the hype is about, as I've said earlier, it feels to me like an easier Korok Seed search except without the reward...
Anyways, The games I actually own for Switch are BotW, Odyssey, Mario Kart, Super Bomberman R, 1-2-Switch, Party Golf, and Just Dance 2018. If you want any more info on those just ask.

Super Bomberman is very... Different. I haven't played the N64 version, but my favorite one has been the DS version, since that, I've been a little disappointed in the ones I've played, none have had anywhere near the variety of options and maps.
In this one, you can unlock different characters through the story and buy them with coins you earn, and each character has a different perk thing they can use, one of the free ones has a bomb line ability, and my favorite one has the ability to teleport and switch places with another character in a line, so you can do a mean trick where you trap yourself and then swap places, lol.
There is a co-op story for two people, too, but it's harder than single player because of a shared life pool and friendly fire.
Anyways, it's pretty fun with a few people, but probably not worth full price. :/

I feel like Mario Kart is a must-have when getting a new Nintendo console, since it's one of those always-agreeable-to-play games that does well in either single- or multi-player, and scratches a rather distinct itch that other games do not. Odyssey should be an enjoyable progression-based co-op game, but on the other hand: a Nintendo console without a Super Smash Bros or Mario Kart game? I dunno, that doesn't seem right at all. ;P
Still, if you've played Mario Kart before (and know how enjoyable it is), and are hesitating on it anyway, then that "itch" probably doesn't need to be scratched for you quite yet.

Well, prices drop over time. When deciding between two elements within a purchase of note, I feel it should always be the "must-have" rather than the "gamble"- that way, no matter what happens, you have the safe bet in hand, and also more time to think over the gamble. And, of course, if and when you get the gamble later on, it'll be for a lower price, meaning it's that much less of a gamble.
I mean, as I noted in other comments, I really think Odyssey is going to be great for co-op. I'm just not much of a gambler in general. :)

I wish ARMS would go on sale, that one is fun and frequently updated, but I've not seen it go on sale yet...

bump , sorry , I don't have NS.
So , can't suggest from myself.
But I think these two are very different , If you should choose one from these , you can choose according to your habits
BTW , when I watch twitch , most of player play Splatoon 2 , I think this one maybe is an new suggest.

I would say you will end up with more replay time on the Kart game if you have a couple people to play with. As long as you have the players you can jump in and race and even going over the same track is fun. You don't suffer from near as much fading enjoyment from playing already.

Has-Been Heroes is fun, and if I remember right, it's cheaper than other games. It is a rogue-like though, so it comes with a steep learning curve and stupid amounts of bullshit.
Cave Story also got a physical release, if you haven't played it yet.
If price is an actual issue, check out the eshop. Most games on there are cheap, except the ones with physical releases. I'd suggest Steamworld Dig 2, Shovel Knight, and Oceanhorn but it really depends on what type of games you like.

They're porting a bunch of games to the switch, so if you prefer handheld for some games...
I don't think it was mentioned, but if you want to play Mario Kart with people you might want to invest in a second controller which costs 40-60$ I think. Too lazy to google.

We are aiming for Co-op so we'll try Odyssey on co-op and if it's boring for player 2 then we'll try it single-player.
The last Mario Kart I played was one of the old wii ones so I'm sure a lot has changed. Dual boxes do sound a little annoying though. I added snipperclips to my "must get" list since a couple people have recommended that one :)
oooo I'm excited for Bayonetta. Thanks for the heads up!

Hey everyone. My boyfriend and I bought a Nintendo Switch with Breath of the Wild, and it's been incredibly fun. The games are very expensive though (60 dollars each) so it's hard to decide on which games to buy.
For what game to buy next, we are specifically looking at Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I've heard only good things about Super Mario Odyssey, but the co-op doesn't sound very immersive. Meanwhile, Mario Kart is great for Multiplayer and always fun, but its usually the same and doesn't have a story like Odyssey.
Please only vote in the poll if you've played one or two of the games. OR suggest us some other Switch games that are also great!
