It's a really old inside meme from when hidden giveaways started. By hidden I mean someone would make a forum post about something random and it somehow would get you to a giveaway. People started to say "Thanks for Skyrim" to set people on wild witch hunts on all the threads.

It is successful because enough people find it witty enough to use it over and over. Asking WHY is it successful is just a pointless question that more often than not cannot be answered. I hope that's not too hard to understand.

Some people don't get that it's not funny (nor has it ever been). It's like an Steamgifts-styled arrow to the knee joke. Somehow Skyrim is likely to produce memes that are not funny at all...

I suppose because Skyrim was perceived as a let down by many people and substandard and shallow. It looked promising and turned out to be a hallow husk with little content and depth to it.

Of course, i am not entirely in agreement with that, but at least thats the major complaint you hear about Skyrim and why people that dislike it, dislike it (if they liked Oblivion or Morrowwind)

Why Skyrim? Why not GTA IV Complete Edition? Because of it's origins ;) And because it's pricey still so it's a valuable game. I imagine we won't be seeing the Skyrim thing a year from now when it's worth only 15$ but I could be wrong.

I think because it started on a puzzle giveaway, where the game was not Skyrim, but the OP asked everyone who made it to say "Thanks for Skyrim." That's what I remember hearing anyway. I missed the origin of it.

It's like the person who feels compelled to let everyone know his comment is first by typing "First" as his comment. It's not so much a meme as much as it is people just being retarded and unoriginal/not funny.

Pretty much because Skyrim is such a pricey game that it would be very rare for it to be given away, and that when it first came out everyone and their mom knew about it.
