DARK SOULS II
Divinity: Original Sin (Classic)

As someone who maxed out Dark Souls 2 I'd say that's it. What I've liked the most is the challenge I guess.

Didn't play Divinity, I don't like turn-based RPG's.

Doesn't that make you a non-expert, then? Your opinion shouldn't matter, here, because you have no idea if Divinity might be better for someone who likes both but prefers one.

Yes, you are right. Sorry for non relevant view. (no sarcasm, my opinion is kinda pointless)

Aw no, that's not what I meant! Your opinion on Dark Souls II is perfectly valid! It's a great game, from what I understand. I'm sorry. I was being excessively harsh in my previous comment.

Also Divinity isn't turn-based.

Divinity: Original Sin is, or is at least close enough.

Each character in battle take turns in order to move/attack, and have action points to spend.... tell me what its called if not turn-based?

Now that you've heard of it, you're going to look it up, right?

I did. But I'd rather play Pillars of Eternity or Dragon Ages.

Played both, here are my thoughts

Divinity: Original Sin (around 130 hours after finishing pretty much everything):

  • great story even though it starts a bit slow
  • great lore
  • not much replay value in my opinion; finished the story and loved it but I don't plan on starting again
  • gameplay is great if you like TBS (I do and it played very well); combat is very cool as every element on the battlefield can change the tide
  • can play co-op if you're into it
  • dialogue can be hilarious at times
Recommended if you enjoyed games like Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, anything related to Dungeons and Dragons mostly

Dark Souls II (around 160 hours in it and still playing from time to time):

  • great lore
  • story is so-so but I didn't pay much attention to it anyway
  • can replay almost endlessly if you're into it
  • gameplay is glorious
  • memorable boss fights
  • PvP is loads of fun and the community is very active
  • 3 DLCs that rock your world (might be better than the base game actually)
Recommended if you enjoyed getting mauled by a bear and ragequitting every now and then

Both are amazing games. I'm a Dark Souls fan but Divinity was awesome as well.

Before Original Sin, the Divinity series was pretty obscure, and has since garnered a cult following.

not much to compare, as these are both very different games. It's like asking "which is better - Tomb Raider or CS:GO" based on both having character shooting firearms ;p

DS2 is great action-packed gameplay, very challenging, unforgiving yet rewarding. It also has awesome graphics, ability to play against other people and great lore idea. On the other hand Divinity, while looking Oldish and not having great graphics, has wonderful artstyle, rich world for exploration, absolutelly awesome story, lots of dialogue, additional lore texts, Impressive number of different skills, character progression and great sense of humour. But these are two totally different games.

If you prefer oldschool RPGs with shitloads of text, puzzles, figuring out stuff etc - go for Divinity, as it is one of the best modern ones in the genre. Beaten maybe only by Pillars of Eternity.

If you prefer skillful action-RPGs go for DS2.

Almost all comments are in favor of Dark Souls II but Divinity wins the vote :D
Both of the games have their pros and cons like stated above.
I like Divinity more cause it's more story based game. Dark souls also has story but its not that shoved in your face so its like optional and I lake games with good story.

Haven't played Divinity yet. Not planning to either.

But I have a 100 hours in DS2. And it was my first Souls game I've ever played.

PROS
+Freedom in exploration without any handholding

  • Large world map
  • Interesting lore
  • Lot's of boss encounters

CONS

  • Recycled boss fights
  • Some boss fights were way too easy
  • Hitboxes and damage registration are sometimes off

Two very different games.

For me Dark Souls 2, despite my love for the entire mood that game breathes is a no go. It's a reflex game, a game that requires a good hand-eye coordination. I don't have those anymore (due to circumstances). I'm not into MP games, either and having other people barging in my game is not an option. Nevertheless, DS2 is a great game. in other circumstances i would have picked it up without second thoughts. Zelghadis enumerated all its strong points.

Divinity: Original Sin was my choice as it suits me better. It's old school, quite big, solid story, fun to play. Requires a lot of attention, a lot of reading (which if you have a good imagination makes things even better), has quite a few puzzles, a party of characters, each with his/her agenda and great music.

People said no one heard about Divinity until the D:OS. I disagree with that affirmation. I picked the first one on disc and i know plenty of people that did the same, despite the use of the infamous StarForce protection (removed later with a patch). The original was quite something, but it did not had a lot of marketing going on for it. Beyond Divinity was pushed more towards a Diablo 2 clone and despite being a solid game, it was a far cry from the original. And then it came Divinity 2 with its expansion (now both the base game and the expansion are merged into Director's Cut). Divinity 2 has a great story, with unexpected turning points, but the gameplay...Thanks, but no thanks. D:OS was a return to the roots, to the gameplay style of the original, with a party as a bonus.

So, no Divinity wasn't a great unknown. It was well-known amongst the hardcore fans of the RPG's genre. And it was loved and loathed, but never ignored.

So, in conclusion: pick the game that fits your gameplay style - you want fast action? Get the DS2. You want to think your every move, your every action? Pick D:OS.

The lack of blocking in Divinity 2 meant that combat mostly became about bunny hopping around, which gets really annoying. That game would've been much better if I could've just blocked!
