The anime is actually a fairly abridged version of the game, so it's not really necessary. On the other hand, the game is a visual novel, so it's more reading than anything else.

As a compromise, there's Steins;Gate Elite, which replaces the static backgrounds with scenes from the anime to make it more like you're 'playing the anime'; this version added some scenes the anime didn't have (particularly for the alternate endings) and undid some of the anime's more unpopular changes, but it's still cut down from the original game by quite a bit and noticeably reuses scenes as well.
