Why do people give their gifts here? Do they get reimbursed?

No. Simple friendliness and charity. We don't need them, so we'll give them on to someone out of the kindness of our hearts. There's no reward in it whatsoever but the feeling of making someone's day, and that's no bad thing.

Yea you get $100 for every 5 games you give away. You didn't know that?

Is this $100 thingy true? I looked at the stickied threads and didn't see anything about it. If it's true i could really give away some stuff.

Just because you are Fluttershy, I cannot continue this line anymore. Nope, that was a joke all the way. You get nothing from such charity action, except some kind feeling that you made someone happy.

I have always liked the grand old oak of steamgifts. I heard squirrels steal boxed copies of steam games from kids and hide them in the oak, or so the legends say.

If some charity happens to win your giveaway, it might be even tax-deductible.

Comment has been collapsed.

'Coz it's like " you gave me a chance to win something which I did, now let me do the same for you".
It's simple. You have bought some game(s) cheap (due to discount or it came to you from some bundle, where you already got some of those games), then you give everypony else, who was late to buy for cheap, chance to win it. So do they later.
So if it's all perfect, it's just legit way to abuse Steam discounts.

Fuck the friendship report

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There are two reasons for this

1.) Charity, selfishness, at some rate the giving of the gift is the aim here.

2.) By giving out gifts (generally by buying in bulk or cheaply), one can understandable end up in one of the private giveaway groups. If getting games is the goal, you can easily recieve more gifts than you give out. In theory, I've never actually seen this done.

I mainly give out since I don't like feeling like a parasite.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Indeed (about parasite line). I sure will giveaway a game or two later as well, when my money situation gonna be fixed, despite I win something or not. Not like 5 copies of Skyrim, but there are a lot of other great games to make someone play it over and over for satisfaction and happiness.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think giving away gifts to get into private groups is just like buying all the steam games for holiday objectives so you can try to win Skyrim or something, really cost-inefficient and for the most part just leads to disappointment (since like you said they are the people buying bulk $1 games while they are on sale to boost their giveaway status.)

Guess I can't really talk at all though since I have yet to do a giveaway, on this site anyways.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

not really, i know many people who give away cheap games, but win many expensive games.

This site is full of people like that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Never forget, that no matter how many ppl with 8724 games won and 0 personal giveaways we have here, we as well got ppl with over nine thousands giveaways and almost no winnings if none at all. Doesn't mean you must be a parasite, because there are always some good ones to share for free, the point is, that for 100501 giveaways it'll be exactly 100501 wins - steamgifts cannot work the other way.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't play a ton of high-profile games, but I really like introducing people to the games that I do like.

Games like Recettear and Crayon Physics Deluxe, for example.

Sometimes I even find it more satisfying to give a game that I like to someone else than to get a game that I've wishlisted.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Since everyone has stated the obvious charity and kindness points...
A person might give away a game they feel it good but it is under the radar in order for it to get more attention. Speaking of which I think we've had a publisher or two (or at least I think they were) create a giveaway with mass copies of their games for that exact purpose.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The magic of friendship it is! Such publishers sure will be welcome by Princess Celestia and by us, brony. And of course it's just great, even if done for attention purpose.

Well, the Faerie Solitare guy gave away well over 100 copies of his game. The Rochard guy gave out a bunch as well. Dunno about anyone else though but I don't check public giveaways enough to really know.

Yeah, guys, I'm a brony as well, have been for a long time, but can you tone it down a little? A little joke here and there is fine, using everypony is fine, but you two are pushing it a little too far among people who don't give a wank, and that's what's giving us a bad rep.

For the love of gaming! \o/

Some day, in several years time, when I'm (Hopefully) uber rich, I'm going to be single, and with the oodles of cash that I have saved from not having a partner, I'm going to make a giveaway with like 1000 copies of the currently most popular game. When the time comes, most will think it's a scam (Who in their right mind would give away $50000 worth of games... ?), but I can tell you now - It's going to be AWESOME :D
