Well, sorry if it's in the wrong category or if there's already a thread, I didn't spot it.

But I saw an announcement in a Russian Steam group I am a part of (am not russian tho), but even in my region, and on steamdb, as far as I checked (for Crysis and Spore, in GBP, prices have risen), and in my personal case, Crysis was 9,99 euros and now it's 19,99.

So, like, wtf? Greedy much? Does anyone even care?

its interesting for sure, not sure what the strategy is since i doubt those games see much in the way of sales... but either way, EA have a long way to go before they match bethesda or capcom for greed.

Cpcom is not greed at all..and they made fans happy releasing old resident evil games remastered and they go on sale often..to me capcom is far form bad company like Beth bioware and EA ..or the lazy Ubi

Meanwhile the same Capcom put advertisements on fighter's CLOTHES in Street Fighter 5, not to mention the abysmal state of the game with minimal roster and recurring problems. They are outstandingly incompetent and greedy regarding some of their games, while yeah, they do really good job with others.

Fighting games are horrible when it comes to DLC. If you want to see how bad it could get, look at Dead or Alive 6

Dead or alive 6 is not really a fighting game it's more of a jiggle physics engine

If they raise the regular price, then the price during a sale ($5) will look like a bigger percent discount...

And also to increase the "value" of Origin Access

I had the same thought. If they aren't seeing many sales of these games except at discount, might as well make the discount look more impressive.

(I went to a going out of business sale at a Kmart once. Nothing was less than 30% off tag price, yet somehow the prices mostly didn't seem that good. Then I noticed that new price tags had been placed over old ones: they'd increased the sticker price to keep the sale price the same despite the discount.)

I went to a going-out-of-business sale at a record store (Wherehouse Music) and they had changed the prices on all CDs to $19.99 and then had a "25% off liquidation" making them $15 each, but most of the CDs were cheaper than that normally before the "sale".

Wow. That's audacity.

The nice thing about these sorts of sale is that then you don't feel bad the place is going out of business.

I can't speak for stlpaul, but in the case of Kmart they really closed. Sold their carts, shelves and everything.

Same at the sale where I went. Selling all of the cash registers, display cases, lights and anything in the walls of the store.

JC Penney is notorious for discounts. They'll have a table marked $150, 50% off 11 months out of the year.

But, interestingly, a few years ago they got a new CEO, who tried a different strategy - always low prices. That same table was now marked $75. Sales dropped significantly and he was fired within a year.

The simple fact is, 'sales' work, and people would much rather buy an item for half off $150 than the same item for $75.
We gamers are more likely to buy a game at 75% off of $60, than at full price for $15. Which is why the same games go on sale for the same discounts all the time. Look at older games like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. It goes for $5 every sale (winter, spring, summer, thanksgiving, chinese new year, regular new year, jedi new year, whatever), which is its true price. Nobody buys the game the rest of the year, when it's priced at $20, which is its marketing price

I used to work for a retailer that had to close all its stores. None of their competitors bought their inventory, so they had to sell all their stuff to a liquidator.

The liquidator then priced everything like this: they took the highest regular price each item had ever been, then applied the discount to that. The result was like you described: appealing discounts, but not very good prices. And since people could see the old prices under the new stickers, they felt like the store was being shady. The catch is: though the store name remains until the closing deadline, the original store is no longer in charge at all: it's the liquidator's fault, who is often not mentioned, and much less named.

They might be trying to sell more monthly subscriptions. Why buy crysis for 9.99 if you can play all the crysis games for a month for 4.99 (or whatever price it's in your region)

Oh Turkey had the same treatment. Now it's even more expensive than US pricing. I saw similar treatment from Bethesda and Ubisoft before too but a +300% increase is a first for me.

Indeed ... according the SteamDB they increased the regular price for Mass Effect from €9.99 to €19.99 for Europe, while it's €7.99 on Origin. More interesting will be the comparison of the sale prices, though.

I did check the EU price for them and the new raise brought them to 20€

Looks like they uniformed prices in most regions to USA ones, without giving a second though to things such as regional pricing, buying power, exchange rates...
Basically the typical "USA first, you peasants in the rest of the world can f off. but pls don't forget to buy our stuff. thx".

Highly likely this was what they had intended prices to be in the first place, but they only just remembered they had some of their stuff on Steam as well.

As MikulT said, it seems like the price hike is to bring it up to US-level prices. Honestly it should have been brought down in US regions simply to match the rest of the globe simply due to how old the games are. No one is going to spend $20 off sale for a poorly aged +13 year old game

I'd say that they adjusted prices in foreign currencies, because there is a lot of fluctuation happening over the years.
The Russian ruble is only worth 1/3 of what it was worth in 2008, for example. Companies usually adjust a lot faster to such changes, only in the games industry prices remain fixed for ages, no matter what.

But EA isn't the first company to adjust prices in foreign currencies, Paradox Interactive did it some few years ago. And it makes sense not to take losses endlessly, caused by weak currencies.

Some of the poorest regions on steam have become the most expensive regions thanks to this change.
We are talking about a ~380$ min wage here for Turkey, good luck selling their old games for these prices.

For the poll: I gues the intent is greed but the result is stupidity. They raised the prices by +300% for most of their games for Turkey. I mean who would pay that amount of money for a 10 year old game.
