I find myself spending way too much money, more than I have / should spend on steam sales.

I'm so OCD I feel like I have to get everything once its in bundles or on low enough sale because one day I "might" want to play it.

Also steam achievements and trading cards add to the OCD factor.

How do you guys resist your gamers instinct collectors OCD?

How do you decide which games are in and which games are out? No matter the sale?

This is especially true due to the upcoming winter sale.

TL;DR - Spending too much money I don't have on games I don't play and gifts because they're on sale. How do I stop?

You could apply to work at Valve, they get all the present and future Steam content in their accounts. That way, you'd never even have to bother about the sales.

It was easy during this "sale." Lackluster discounts are quite easy on the wallet. Other than dishonored, which was a glitch, there wasn't much to write home about.

Well Dark Souls was at a new low. It's such a great game! Most games aren't worth non-sale purchase, but that one was!

That's actually a good call. My mind passed over it since I had already sunk a few hundred hours into it on ps3, but that's definitely a steal for arguably the best game of last generation.

Couple of methods I use are pretty simple:
-Make use of the shopping cart. Don't purchase items one at a time because you'll find yourself thinking "oh this is ONLY 2 bucks!" "and THIS is only 6 bucks!" ... couple purchases later you've spent 50 dollars. Unless the deal's going to end in literally minutes, put it into your shopping cart and keep shopping. Then go and look at the total. It'll give you a much clearer look at what you're about to spend.

-Ask yourself if you're going to play the game RIGHT NOW. If the answer is no, then don't buy it. More often than not we have games that we're already working on or games we intended to play just waiting. The new purchase will be thrown right onto that pile and before you know it the next sale has come and that games is even cheaper! And you STILL haven't played it.

-Slightly related to the above: keep in mind sales events that you KNOW are coming up. Like you KNOW tons of services will offer christmas sales. If you don't need the game right now then hold out to the next sale (rinse and repeat if you continuously find yourself saying you don't need the game right now). You will probably find a better deal since most games depreciate in value over time (not really applicable to sales that are this close together but I'm talking more like if you wait on games for a year or so).

In the end there's nothing for it but self control.

Great advice there.

Previously one of the best pieces of advice given was to always buy as inventory gift, that way if you don't end up playing it, you can at least trade towards something you will. Done that a couple of times with games I thought I 'must have' only to trade for keys with which to trade for a game I actually end up playing.

Good advice. And yes I do my best to keep in mind sales repeat themselves. But its like my logic fails me after so many days and I give in

Empty wallet and red eyes from crying because I can't get them. Then I eat some ice cream to ease the pain.

There's nothing worse than wanting to play a game that has been 75% off, but currently isn't.

Im sure someone would have a spare copy they are willing to trade for something, I was kicking myself for missing the Mount and Blade sale but I was able to trade 3 Tf2 keys for the complete collection today :P

For bundle deals, backlog. For steam sales, not enough discount. (Obviously more flexible for game I really really want.)
On the other hand, I'm a sucker for PC sales. I'm on the edge right now for 500$ for a new custom tower. And with that much of a purchase, I expect to get 100$ worth of bonus free stuff.

Just dont buy anything... that's what I do. If I see a game I want to play, I buy it, otherwise I obviously dont buy it... (0 games bought this sale)

How would playing games prevent me from buying more games?

I believe his point was if you're compulsively buying games on Steam you're absolutely going to have a rather large number of games you've never played, and by forcing yourself to actually play every game you purchase you stop buying games you won't play.

I usually go like this:
1) Is it at least 75% off?
2) Is it less than 5-6 bucks?
3) If it's a sequel to something, have I played all the previous games in the series?
4) Do I really really REALLY want it?
5) Have I not bought too many bundles lately?
6) Have I not eaten out at KFC much lately and therefore have extra money from eating cheap frozen pizzas all the time?
7) Do I actually think I'll have time to play it any time "soon"?

If all of those score a "yes" then MAYBE I buy it.
Try it, it works. :P
(Well, with buying stuff for myself at least. Doesn't work so well when it comes to buying gifts. T.T )

Funny that you mention the food part. Since... I had weightloss surgery about 3 months ago.
So now my logic goes "Oh, I'll barely spend any money on food for the rest of my life. This shiny new game costs like the burger I'll never have.. BUY!"

Also, logic (4) always fails me, how do I knowwww?

Oh yes, saying goodbye to my stomach and eating more than 2 bites of food wasn't fun, but I had to do it to cure diabetes. Didn't have much weight to lose so now I can play games with my ABS OF STEEL

If you're really concerned about buying too much games, for number 4, don't go with the hype provided by other people around you. I've seen a lot of people buying games because 'others bought them.' Most of them just leave the game to shine in their library. Just buy something you'll start playing at least in a week.

Is there a chance for it to be in a Humble Bundle?
If so, don't buy.

Try completing every single game you have. It will make you forget about the sales. I spent $150 during summer sales and $1.5 during the current sales. I still haven't been able to complete some of the games I bought during summer :P
Edit: Create a game purchase budget for yourself. For me, after summer, I never let myself buy more than $80. The limit should always be first even when some great game goes on a huge sale.

what you do is...you buy all the things you want in this sale or the next or a combo of both. sooner or later there will be very few things you want...then when the next sale happens you can see all the great deals on things you already have and you will then be able to make a thread proclaiming that the current sale sucks (not cause it actually sucks but because you own everything that is a good deal)

lol first world problems, huh? how many STEAM sales have you been through? because I just sort of stopped having your problem after 3 or 4 STEAM sales.

Also, this is not something I have actually done to address this problem but maybe you could try charging your STEAM wallet with the money you want to waste and be done when the wallet reaches 0? I could see that working for some people.

I used to buy everything I could if the price was low. Coming from consoles, the prices was too good to pass up.

Now that I have way too many games, I've stopped. Before buying anything I say "Will I play this in the next 6 months? What other games do I own that I want to play in the next 6 months?"

If I can't justify it or can't see myself ever playing it in the next 6 months I skip it. It will either be in the next big sale or I miss out on it and it's no big deal. How important could it have been if I can't even see myself loading it up in over half a year's time :)

Try trading your spare bundle keys first for games you want to buy.

Like right now, I really want to get the Super Hexagon deal but I'm checking first if I can trade it with one of my games.
