So it's the end of October and November is near, so that means the end of 2023 is (finally) upon us.

So, since there's very few new games coming out now (and it's on my mind now), I thought I'd see what your best games you played this year were.

Now keep in mind, these games do NOT have to have been released in 2023 nor do they have to have been even purchased or won in 2023.

Mine have to be-
Elden Ring
My Time at Sandrock (FINALLY leaving EA on November 2!)
Salt and Sanctuary
Coromon
Edit- I forgot to add in A Jugglers Tale. What a short yet beautiful game that was.
I know it's a hair early and I promise to add in a GA after I get home from work. But please, have at it.

Turns out I mostly played Indies this year. These are the ones that stood out the most:

Beacon Pines
Return of the Obra Dinn
TOEM
Little Nightmares
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Hyper Light Drifter
She Remembered Caterpillars
Octahedron: Transfixed Edition
Detective Grimoire
Elephantasy

I'll go with games I've beaten 100% this year that I've really enjoyed, regardless of when they came out. Some of these I've been playing for years.

Deathloop
Horizon Zero Dawn
Shadow of the tomb raider
The wild at heart
Hitman 3
Metal Gear Solid V
UnMetal
Stray
Lost in Play

And also honourable mention to Pikmin 4 which was a lot of fun.

modded RPG Valheim on server with a ton of players, i think vanilla would be kinda boring tbh.
V rising with friends was a decent games as is.
SHIRIME: The Curse of Butt-Eye, it was a gift from a friend that demanded i stream it for everyone.
the wandering village was a nice short city builder specially that i havent played any in sooo many years, so it wasnt overwhelming and fun to play.
BPM: BULLETS PER MINUTE was probably the game that made me understand why people like roguelikes, but then i tried a different one and went back to not liking them lol.
titanfall 2 was actually a very fun game, it felt like you're playing so many different games even though the game is very short.
cat quest, webbed and i am ashamed to include BOK-BOK: A Chicken Dating Sim with them, but they were nice cute 3 little games that i tried at the beginning of the year.

This is so far the best games I've played in the order from best to worst by experience.

  1. A Plague Tale: Requiem - Loved the prequel, actually am a big fan of the franchise. The sequel delivered on an incredible story and visuals. I highly recommend them. (My score - Excellent aka 9/10)
  2. Yakuza 0 - Super fun game, deep and mature main story, excellent side quests, lots of minigames. (My Score - Masterpiece aka 10/10)
  3. Ori and the Will of the Wisps - Loved the first one a bit more than this one, yet still I think Ori is an incredible metrovenian platformer. (My score - Excellent aka 9/10)
  4. The Evil Within - Did not expect to have this game so high up as I'm not a horror type of player, but man the visuals and presentation of this game is spectacular. (My Score - Masterpiece aka 10/10)
  5. Black Mesa - Never played Half-Life, so I decided to play the fan remake. I highly recommend it if you're turned off by the graphics. (My Score - Masterpiece aka 10/10)
  6. INSIDE - Unexpectedly amazing experience from beginning to end. I enjoyed this game very very much. (My Score - Masterpiece aka 10/10)
  7. Arise: A Simple Story - Like inside, a very easy platformer, but beautiful visuals, with a nice gimmick. (My score - Excellent aka 9/10)
  8. Hogwarts Legacy - Not a fan of Harry Potter, but loved the world and the experience. It was not the strongest in the story department, but fun game. (My Score - Very Good aka 8/10)
  9. Outer Wilds - Very immersive adventure game, with an unique experience. I'm still in the process of completing this game. The rest on this list are all 100% completed. (My Score - Masterpiece aka 10/10)
  10. Cuphead - Hardest game I've played this year. I loved the art, boss fights and style of the game, although I can't recommend this to casual players. It's a masterpiece for those who dare to beat/complete it. (My Score - Masterpiece aka 10/10)

Honorable Mentions:

  1. Diablo IV - Didn't go through the entire campaign, but loved the combat of the game. (My Score - Very Good aka 8/10)
  2. Trepang2 - Very cool game to play, but weak on the story side. (My Score - Good aka 7/10)
  3. Bastion - Loved the story, but the visuals weren't my cup of tea. Gameplay was alright in my opinion. (My Score - Good aka 7/10)
  4. GRIS - Liked the visuals and the story, although it didn't made me sad or cry as some people claimed. (My Score - Good aka 7/10)
  5. 11-11 Memories Retold - Interesting story, but the visuals made collecting stuff a chore more than anything. (My Score - Good aka 7/10)

I also played GRIS, Outer Wilds, INSIDE, Black Mesa and Ori (the first one) this year and I'm seconding all your opinions. Except INSIDE — I think it's a bit overrated, so personally I'd put it next to GRIS.

Edit: Wait, you 100%'d Black Mesa? That's badass.

I thought the same for INSIDE, but the game just clicked better for me than GRIS ever did. Idk why, but I just enjoyed the journey more. The ending was so weird, yet, I just found it so interesting. I wanted the same experience with GRIS, but the ending didn't move me.

I lost my mom to cancer last year, so the story should have hit right home. It didn't for no reason. I did found the music spectacular. I did cry watching someone else cry as a reaction video on YT and that made me emotional. I thought I'm broken, but hey, I love these types of games that try to move you.

Edit: Wait, you 100%'d Black Mesa? That's badass.

Not easy. But much more tolerable than Cuphead was in difficulty. That game is a lot harder from beginning to end.

Haven't played much games in the first half of the year, but oh boy... the 2nd half with BG3 and Cyberpunk was fantastic.
I even enjoyed Starfield a lot, but thats probably not the common opinion here :D

I haven't finished all of these but they've been a blast so far! I will probably add more as I address the backlog:

2023 releases:
Cassette Beasts
Ooblets
Scarlet Maiden
20 Minutes Before Dawn and Boneraiser Minions (tied as really good VS-type games)
Etrian Odyssey 1-3 remasters (very biased but I loved the extra challenges present in these older games)

Pre-2023 games I just played this year:
Coromon
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
Disco Elysium
Stardew Valley
Needy Streamer Overload
Loren the Amazon Princess
Dicey Dungeons (absolutely scratches that StS itch)
