Ukraine= acess to the sea, strategic positioning, more profit on natural gas exporting
Make no mistake Nato getting so close to Russia is a matter of concern- not now but who knows in some future, that would mean having the United States at your doorstep all year long. Being surrounded by Nato would make it hard for Russia to challenge US interests and make then prone to intimidation. No one foresees anything like that anytime soon, unless Putin goes overboard... but history changes. Just recently there was a dumb mad man helming the United States. Given the history between US and Russia Nato that close IS a point of concern and shouldve been for any russian ruler...
But its far from being the main reason. Putin wants ukraine way before any ukraine nato propostions went through

Did you know? In example, Rosneft is not only supplying oil, but also running refineries outside of Russia, from which NATO tanks easily fueled. And it seems quite curious that Mr Putin's colleagues are making a lot of money from supplying NATO troops while he seems to claim that NATO is a threat to Russia, doesn't it?
Not saying that it clearly is a case of Mr Putin saying to the Russians: "Oh noes, NATO is out to get us...", while then in the back room being like: "...which is excellent for the bank accounts of us few, as long as we make sure they will have enough fuel to reach Moscow and beyond.". But it does seem quite weird, doesn't it?
I mean, if NATO is all that a threat and perhaps like plenty evil at that, then why is Russia providing so much assistance to NATO troops to not run dry on their way east? Shouldn't the Russian people expect a policy that actually makes sense, instead of getting into even more poverty just so a few guys can increase their salaries even more?
