Famous Original Rays Pizza
831 7TH Ave
Order by the slice. Plain cheese is best, IMO. The red sauce is perfect and the mozzarella top grade. That's all you need to make good pizza. Calzones and pasta are great too. Don't expect frills. If your favorite pizza is Pizza Hut, don't bother going. Your taste buds are already ruined. :)
Speed chess in Washington Square Park. Don't bet. You will lose.
Hot dog carts are your mouth's friend. Screw that whiny stomach guy. Pack plenty of Zantac.
I used to bus in for a weekend, when I lived in Hacketstown, NJ. I'd lock my return ticket in a locker in Port Authority, so I couldn't be lost or stolen and I was sure to get back home. And I'd take two wallets: one, in my pocket or coat, with just ID, some pictures, and a few bucks; and a second, just a thin fold, not a wallet, hidden somewhere obscure, with cc's and the bulk of cash I had. That way, I had something to placate a mugger while not getting wiped out. Paranoid? You're not paranoid if they're actually out to get you. But, was only mugged once in a couple dozen visits.

FUCK NO
that place is total garbage.
For pizza, go to Patsy's on 56th, or better yet, take the A train to Brooklyn (first stop), eat at either Grimaldi's, or, better yet, Juliana's (expect a long line), then go to Jacques Torres for dessert (they make great chocolate) and walk back across the Brooklyn Bridge
Patsy's opened in the 1940s and was considered one of, if not the, best pizza places in the city, and a lot of famous people from the 1950s and 1960s, such as Frank Sinatra, would go there for a slice. His nephew, Patsy Grimaldi, worked there from when he was 10 years old. After working there for about 50 years, he opened his own restaurant, Grimaldi's, which was rated the best pizza in the city for over 10 years straight. Patsy Grimaldi retired about ten years ago, sold his restaurant and the rights to the name. Retirement didn't suit him, so he opened another restaurant, Juliana's.

Sounds delish. Rays is the kind of place that people seem to love or hate. Strong opinions either way, not many mehs. It's all personal taste and there is no accounting for that. There's no such thing as objectively "great" or "lousy" food of any kind, outside of the mouth and mind of the eater. As for Brooklyn, I'd probably pass just to avoid the hipsters. Not a fan. Like I'll ever make it back to NYC again. I'm stuck in this pathetic excuse for a "city": a culturally homogenized boil on the buttocks of the West. <sigh>
I really want to eat some pizza.

then go to Patsy's
Famous Rays is for people who don't know about pizza. It's better than your average corner slice, but it's nothing special.
Grimaldi's/Juliana's & Jacques Torres are, IMO, the only reason to go to Brooklyn, but the added bonus is that they're on the waterfront right next to the Brooklyn Bridge, not in hipster Brooklyn, which is a nice place to live, but not a nice place to visit

Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Time Square were the places I went when I was there for a weekend. Nice place though if you plan on taking the subway, make sure you know where you are going since it confused us when we were there and managed to get lost a few times XD.

Go see if the Statue of Liberty has a huge, beating heart. Make sure to look for the "No Easter Eggs Here" sign.

Walk, eat, take the subway, walk, embrace the city and the people, taxi, eat, walk.
Cross Brooklyn bridge on foot.Take the Staten Island ferry.
Don't waste time in line's, don't buy crap.
Go to Central Park, cross the park if you have to.
Walk and eat NY food from all over the world.

First off, figure out what you want to see, then plan them in a way that makes geographic sense: Don't switch between midtown and downtown, don't criss-cross from east to west or other way around, etc.
I've lived there long enough, tell me what your interests are and I'll plot a good agenda for you.

Also, going to the "Top of the Rock" generally beats the top of the empire state building, because there's almost no line, and you can see the empire state building.

The pizza in NY is super delicious, especially if you love it with not that much sauce. Ive also noticed the closer you get to downtown Manhattan, the more crazy it is in terms of rush hour and such. I was born and raised in the Jewish part of Brooklyn which is surprisingly really tranquil and nice so the traffic parts of NY are not my taste. But they do have the best shops.
But Forbidden Planet in Manhattan is super awesome, I would DEFINITELY suggest visiting it, its basically just a master comic shop but they have all kinds of great comic related items.
Also (I don't remember the exact location) Chinatown is a must visit if your into all that cheap knock off stuff or Asian culture in general. There is a street full of Pinoy food and groceries if you love food from the Philippines but I don't know if its close to Chinatown or not, I don't remember.

I've never been to NY, but one of my friends has, and so has my wife. Not together of course, that would be weird.
Anyway, here are some recommendations I've got from them. Have a good trip!
You’re going to be doing so much walking! So make sure you wear comfy shoes! The subway is easy to use as well though.
Get the subway over to Brooklyn, and walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge towards Manhattan.
Book your tickets to go up to the 'Top of the Rock' in advance. That way you can jump the queue. We went on our last night at about 11pm - there was hardly anyone up there and it was so clear you could see for miles.
Apparently, you should do the Empire State Building in the evening and the Rock in the morning. But we went up the Empire State at 8.30am and it was beautiful! Because we went up early in the morning, we didn't have to queue for long at all.
Central Park – Spend a couple of hours walking around the park. The area around Bethesda fountain is great. If the weather is nice and you like boats, you can hire a row boat for an hour or so. I also recommend hiring bikes so you can go round the whole park.
Walk through Soho, Little Italy and Chinatown. They’re all in the same area. It’s crazy as the streets all merge into the same and you’ll be walking along one street where it feels like you’re in Italy, and the next thing you know you’re in Chinatown!
The Highline:
This place is amazing! Great for a walk if the weather is nice and you have some time on your hands. We went at dusk one evening, and it was so lovely. As it’s open-air, you will need to go when the weather is nice!

The West village:
A good place to walk around. Bleecker Street is great! A must is the original Magnolia Bakery. There is a tiny Pizzeria down there as well, which bakes the best pizza outside of Italy (see below).
If you're going to NY for shopping, two of the big, famous stores are Bloomingdales and Macy’s – Before you buy anything, go to their visitors centre. If you show your passport or drivers licence they will give you a visitors discount card (about 20% off!) to use in the store.
Places to eat
Strip House
Amazing steak! It’s very popular so I would try and book. The atmosphere is very 1920’s style. It used to be a strip bar, but a classy one! Now there are no strippers, sorry to disappoint you...
Keste Pizzeria
Seriously, one of the best pizzas I have ever had outside of Italy!
Tick Tock Diner
Proper diner! So much fun! Def recommend for breakfast, but the portions are large so beware!
The Spotted Pig
God damn awesome food. Just look at that burger and fries on their homepage! In Greenwich village. Jay z co-owns it! Good for lunch!
and for more food, this very useful list...

...is where I'm going tomorrow for 6 days of summer vacation!
Anyone have any tips/hints/suggestions/experiences worth sharing? Food that should or shouldn't be eaten, places that are or absolutely aren't worth visiting, things to see, things not to do?
