I know that most of us have a few games that we'll never get around to, whether it's because we got them on multi-game keys or we just don't have time or there's always a "better" game that you want to play more, but there are also people out there with thousands of games in their accounts, games they know they'll never play, and I was wondering why that is.

It seems to me to be almost a game in and of itself, that the collection of games is attractive to anyone with a completionist-type personality.

So why do you think people do it? Or if you have one of those accounts, I'd love to know why you buy so many games. Is it to do with trading? Idling for cards? Or do you just like buying things?

i see a good deal for a game i want to play: i buy... but actualy i started at least not to activate it imideately but rather put it into my inventory or collecting it in my humble account so probably they will not end in my libary to get never played but to be given away here to end up in a strangers libary to get never played [...]

For bundle games I only activate the ones I want and I give away the rest, but for ones I buy from Steam, I couldn't just put them in my inventory. Doing that would tell me that I don't want it enough.

Plus I'm trying to do a "buy it now and play it now" thing, where if I won't play it right away I'm waiting until the next sale to buy it.

My main has a few games that will never be touched. The reason is that I played them a lot and I have them on Steam to either own a legit copy after all the years or to support the current caretakers (Age of Empires II HD and Baldur's Gate EE are the best examples). The rest I plan to get to (re)play and doing good so far: about 26 games left, so maybe I could finish my backlog this year.

My alt hordes bundle games with cards and any assorted low-rated junk, only for cards. And not to sell but to just use a trade account for people to help completing badges and to enter card lotteries. Too bad only one group I know of has those left. They are fun. :)

Card lotteries? I've never even heard of people doing that before.

Currently only the Coupon Dumpster does them, at least of what I know of. You enter with one card, and the cards end up drawn in a raffle with a select few winners. Since low-tier cards are essentially worthless, it is good fun. And if you are on the unlucky side, a good way besides trade bot donations to get rid of unwanted/leftover cards.

I'm stupid with money and, like a good consumer, fall prey to the concept of "value" in bundles (despite, you know, honestly, most of those games being bundle fodder (games I'd never think twice about if they weren't in bundles)).
I've not delved into IdleMaster yet, but really need to. It's gotten to the point that I've so many multiples of the same games (with cards), I've made an alt account on Steam (that isn't tied to SG - no cheating (here)) for to farm (at some point).
I think it took about a year before I bought my first non-discounted game on Steam, so at least I can say that(?)
But everybody knows you're nobody if you don't have a gratuitous amount of games, regardless of quality.
Am I cool yet?

I've stopped buying bundles unless there's more than one game in them that I want - unless, of course, there's one game I really want and it's much cheaper than buying it on its own. But then again, I always pay more than the average so a lot of the time that doesn't actually save me any money.

I've started evaluating games by asking myself if I would pay proper money for them. If the answer is no then I move on.

I currently have 349 games on steam (so not too many) and even I have a lot of games that I just know I will never play. Some of those I got for free on sites like indiegala, but I don't get those games anymore (if I know I won't play them). The biggest problem for me is that I buy games I really want to play, so I install them right away. This way I never get to work on my backlog. Even if I complete a game there will be three more games I really want to play. I just don't buy bundles anymore except if there is a game (or more) that I know I'll play straight away.

And then there are those games that I regret buying (not many, but there are a few). Usually mainly because the games were a lot different then I expected.

You're pretty similar to myself. I've stopped getting freebie games that I don't want too. And I also have the issue of playing new games rather than old ones that have been waiting.

My current problem is that I'm really taken with Sunless Sea and I'm playing it all the time rather than starting other games. I took a break for a few weeks to play Dust: An Elysian Tail and I only managed that because HLTB said it was a short game.

I've tried starting a few others but Sunless Sea keeps calling me back.

That's something completely different. As example, stamps retain or rise in their value, they are also tradable and come in limited quantity. Steam is whole different beast, I would rather talk about bragging, peer pressure and hoarding behaviour (see bibliomania).

No. it's different. not completely different. there are many similarities. in the end both are about collecting stuff.

As example, stamps retain or rise in their value, they are also tradable and come in limited quantity.

yes, but is this the main reason for people to collect stamps? do you think people collect them, because they simply enjoy it, or just because they hope they rise in value and are profitable some day? it's a hobby, people just like to do it. by the way, you seem to find it reasonable to defend stamps, collecting games on steam is obviously nonsensical to you. well, one other major difference between those two hobbies is, that you can't really do anything with the stamps. except for looking at them. but you can play your games. isn't it understandable that to some people it makes way more sense to collect something you can actually use? that doesn't mean you have to play them. but you can. and whenever you want to play something, you have quite a lot to choose from. that's also part of the fun, and something stamps just can't offer.

I would rather talk about bragging, peer pressure and hoarding behaviour

Such negativity. sounds to me like a clear case of jealousy.

Point taken.

yes, but is this the...just can't offer.

Yes, collecting any stuff is silly hobby. But with Steam, there's no end goal, there's no uniqueness of said collection. Can we even talk about it as collection then? Is there a point in collecting titles equivalent to quality of Bad Rats, where quantity is unlimited with zero rarity (unlike for example bad past-gen console games)?

You say you like to have options, but you would attain same result by getting games on one at time basis once you actually want to play them, not to mention the obvious price drop of older titles.

Have you even considered fact that said collection is tied to lifetime of Steam as a service?

Such negativity. sounds to me like a clear case of jealousy.

Are you deliberately trying to prove my point or was it meant in sarcastic manner?

Now don't get me wrong, I'm afflicted by this in certain extent as any other SG or Steam user in general. I just don't see a reason to look at it through rose tinted glasses.

No, but I don't really understand why having a large number of games is important to someone, especially if they're not good games (and I would imagine that the average quality of games in someone's library is inversely proportional to the quantity).

I guess I don't really get philately either. I used to be more collection-minded (dvds, figurines) but I'm at a point in my life where I feel that I could get rid of about 90% of my possessions and still be just as happy so it's not a mind-set I understand anymore.

I think there's a difference between "Hey, this game looks good. I'll buy it and hopefully I'll get to play it in the future." and "I know this game is crap and that I'll never play it, but it adds to my collection".

Unfortunately not. There's rarely a bundle game that I'm amazingly desperate to play (although it does happen). Because I do reviews for our website I need to focus on stuff that's newer. Sometimes the bundles have an Early Access or new release in there, but most of it is just "yeah, that looks cool" and then I end up playing Binding of Isaac like normal :)

Personally, I've bought around 150ish games since September last year. I don't go for bundles or any packages on the internet, its the steam sales that make me loose it. Its not like I spent a lot of my money since all of the games were bought with revenue from trading.

Mainly, there are two reasons for me to get a game:

  • I like the game and want to play it (which also contains all the "that sounds nice, I will try it when I have time"-games that propably never will be played)
  • I already played the game and enjoyed it

I often buy games on sale or in bundles that I played before and propably never will play again on steam.
Some of them because I pirated them once and enjoyed playing them, so it's a bit of "silencing the conscience" . Some of them I already own and buy them just for the convienience of having these games in my Steam library. Some of them I owned once but the disks are lost or broken. There are many reasons ;-)

I used to play pirated games , now i like to buy my games if i can. Is a great feeling of satisfaction.

Here in Colombia an AAA game could cost a 1/4 of the minimum salary. We dont have so many game stores , and Boxed PC Games are around 30USD , the old ones...

Original games , arent a option for most people , so they modified every consoled ever made. to run pirated games, the deal is here many people has XBOX 360 with 3USD pirated Games... And PC Games are sold on streets, actually i havent seen so many people with original games on PC.

The problem here is the piracy isnt a deal with law enforcements, if you arent selling piracy on streets to the masses and making profit of it. So after steam was selling games in USD , people didnt think so much on buying steam games , and the plattform wasnt so common.

I Started with my steam account with 1 game (Batman Arkham Asylum), some day i just remembered that i had that game on steam unplayed. Later I just installed steam again and saw the THQ sale for 25 bucks , was my oportunity to have a lot of original games. Later in work i just discovered humble bundle (The first origin HB) , and shazzam with new salary , new games , later trades and cards.

Now its a hobby , i told myself to stop when I bought shadow of mordor GOTY in 15 USD..it was when i had like 300 games... Now with 403 , i need a few more to stop , i won't see myself with 1500 games..

Cheers.

In response to "Steam will last that long,"
I think Steam will last for a very long time. And even if Valve starts to go down the drain, I'm doubt another company will look at Steam and say, "Oh, there's millions of players using this platform every single day, let's not buy it and let it die."

not really sure, I started off just buying small, then someone introduced me to Steamgifts and I started to trade as much as I could.. Buying bundled combined with traded saw my game list start to grow at a fast pace. Add in me buying games that I wanted and would have bought either way.... and looking at my account now I'm like.. wow..

Trying to slow down considerably on buying games, atleast non bundled games for the time being. Although the damage was already done like 4500+ games, I'm pretty sure even if I never bought another game I'd have a backlog that would last me 5 - 10 years..

I have a bit of hoarding mentality. I also collect books, and something that happened to me a few times early on is that I would see something I wanted, didn't want to buy it right now, so I'd make a mental note (or add it to my wishlist, once bookstores online became prevalent) to get it later, only to find it was no longer in print when I wanted to buy it. Something similar happens on Steam occasionally, with games being removed from the store. So, nowadays my instinct is to grab things when they're on sale, or if I think they might disappear. I know very well I won't have enough time in my life to read all the books or play all the games I'd like to. shrug

There some times i want to collect everything and there some times i want to get rid of everything at easy, i believe its a passion, consumerism or despression... maybe both all together.

I rarely buy bundles cause i prefer a clean library from games i don't have purpose to play, the number is around 500 but was 700, thanks steam for adding the ability to remove games from library by hand.

...i find my self do other things then playing games, maybe im bored of copy pasted games of the new generation.

Yesterday i started Pikmin 3 on my Wii U i bought 3 years ago(collecting dust) and i find my self to enjoy this title more then the 99% of the games i played on steam the last 7-8 years?

I fill sorry for the money i wasted.

Every game I buy, I fully intend on playing...and if I see it on sale cheap enough...I buy it, because I think "That's a good price..i'm not yet ready to play it, but I know I want to....What happens if I want to play it, and it's not this cheap again for a looooong time!" So I grab it...especially if it's 90% off.

The same thought process goes into a lot of things really...I got so many Books I plan on reading, and DVDs that I am totally going to watch...but they were on sale somewhere cheap so I grabbed them before I was ready to use them.
