I've been waiting for this game to come up on Steam for ages, and when it finally does it looks like they just went for a cheap remasterization that censores things from the original game instead of adding them up. Such a shame. I was hoping for a random map generator that allowed you to customize the kind of map you wanted to create much better than the original, and I even read they removed the random map generator!? WTF!!!

Was also hoping to be able to get the game for Android and finally be able to play with friends and finish some multiplayer game lol, but I guess it's over...

Such a shame how greedy can companies be, instead of being happy by making money out of nostalgia without almost any investment at all since the game is already done and the sales are guaranteed, and they go and fuck it all up....-____-

Anyway just opened this thread to listen your opinions, and despite i've already read terrible reviews in Steam itself, wanted to hear some others in here aswell.

Sometimes censorship is necesary, due to copyrights.

I remember hearing something, maybe it was from TB, that said that they had lost the assets and code for the expansions, and that's why the HD edition is so limited.

I remember reading about Strife source code being lost, preventing the re-realease, yet here it is, perfectly remastered.

To be fair, Strife used the Doom engine. That makes a huge difference.

Is that just the original WAD in a new engine, or a true remake?

This!

And get Heroes Chronicles while you're at it. (The story between HOMM III and IV, using the engine from III.)

I was excited about it too when I first heard about it. I already have it from GOG and I think I even have my original boxed version somewhere. I might still get it on Steam if it goes on sale real cheap. HoMM is my all time favorite game series.

Does VCMI allow Multiplayer online aswell? I tried to find out but I didn't seem to find an answer.

don't think it has multi. and after the "great news" it sometimes has some bugs. but all in all, better this than not
you do however need to have a copy of H3 to install there. not a problem to get one very cheap. and cheaper than the 30$ Ubi wants

Do you need to have a copy of H3 complete edition or the original will do the trick?

I posted my thoughts on it in the Steam forums when it first came out and nothing has changed since then.

Basically it's just a lame cash-in on the part of Ubisoft. It's not even a real HD re-master and for the most part what they did was make it compatible with today's higher resolutions and widescreens. The problem is there was already a free HD mod out there that did that, and as you pointed out the new 'HD Edition' is missing some key things, the biggest of which are the two expansion packs that added a ton of content to the game (and better campaigns imo).

The one new feature addition that might actually be useful for convenience's sake is matchmaking for multiplayer if they have done it right (that's a big if), but even so it would not be nearly enough to justify it in my opinion.

Like numerous people have said I'm sure, you are better off just getting Heroes III Complete on GOG given that it's priced cheaper and includes both expansion packs. And you can just slap the HD Mod on it and call it a victory.

  1. The source code of the expansions was lost when the publisher went bancrupt more than 10 years ago. Afterwards the rights for the Might & Magic franchise were bought by Ubisoft. That is why they can't update the expansions.

  2. Please stop talking nonsense about the HD mod (as opposed to the HD version sold on Steam), which is a totally different thing. It only enables higher resolutions, but the graphics themselves aren't updated at all by it. That means the world map will show a larger area and everything else is simply upscaled from 800x600. I made a comparison gif between HD mod and HD version here.

The lack of expansions is certainly disappointing, but understandable and unlike some conspiracy theorists I don't see why they would lie about it (would have been only a few more creatures to update in exchange for a lot more sales). Whether the HD update without expansions is worth $15 to you is something you have to answer yourself - personally I think it's too much and my only criticism about the HD version.

There is not much difference in the graphics and certainly not enough to justify a new purchase imo.

And you are losing a lot without the 2 expansions, which I felt had significantly more interesting campaigns and gameplay than the base game.

Don't bother, get the GOG version and look for the HD fan patches. This one is a waste of money as it's missing stuff that actually made HoMM 3 great, especially the RMG,

Eh, I'll still buy it to go back through the campaign, despite having the original on CD. Not until it's 80%+ off though.

What does it censor? I don't remember anything in HOMM3 that needed censoring.

I guess I just missused the verb since I'm not native english.

I just meant they excluded the expansions and the random map generator.

As you can read on comments above, apparently the expansions weren't included due to source code loss, however I don't see any reason to exclude random map generator. Considering they didn't even put it on HOMM VI, presumably in order to sell expansions I'm guessing the worse from them...

The random map generator was added with one of the expansions, was it not?
