So every time someone gives a game away for free we end up with a huge number of give-a-ways for that game. Would a seven day ban for people creating give-a-ways for free games stop this flood of greed? How about a lifetime ban for people who make CV required give-a-ways for these free games?

Free points are the best, just learn to add it to the filter and we're all good.

I think would be a lot funnier to put to zero their CV (sry for bad eng)

Comment has been collapsed.

. . .

  • Giving away an exploited game (or one which is freely available) will result in your CV being reset to zero.

I think this is a brilliant idea! Look at what it accomplishes.

  • Those who want to give the game away regardless of the consequences may still do so.
  • Any flood of free games being given away still benefits the community with "free points."
  • Those trying to abuse the system to accumulate CV are punished in the most painful fashion.
  • The tide of freebies and exploited keys will be lessened due to the consequences.
  • SteamGifts will quickly acquire a reputation for being "a cut above" all those other sites which have become dumping grounds.

Yeah, but what if someone gave away a free game they actually paid for to giveaway and didn't know it was being given away for free in mass quantities somewhere. I mean, at least I can see that happen with a non-english reader.

i think lifetime ban would be suitable for some shameless people but not right at the first strike. but of course we are not cg so it's kinda pointless to discuss this.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think lifetime ban would be perfect for 2nd or 3rd time offense. Discussion is more for fun than anything constructive but you never know who might pass by and read it and actually put an idea into action.

Is there nothing done at all about it? I see people who are giving away not their first free game and have CV for the previous ones :S

Comment has been collapsed.

I can't give you a good answer on that. I know the game is eventually removed from the give a way list so it can't be given away. That probably removes the CV the gifter receives. However, it doesn't stop the wave of greed we have to tread thru when free games first hit.

They don't have the staff anyway.

Comment has been collapsed.

From what I've seen, the staff/mods here are pretty good at updating the giveaway list and taking care of problems. But I don't hang out in the forums very often so I could be wrong.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Or just put that game on your ignore list

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's one of the first things I do. But why ignore a problem when you can make a change?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why does it matter so much to make this change? It's a simple matter of, have more giveaways to camp your points in if you don't want to win that game, or add it to your manual filter. Also, even assuming this was seriously considered (which I don't really see why it's important at all), when does it end? After we police the people giving the free copies, why not start policing those who put up games from recent bundles or who buy a game in a Steam sale for less than $1? And then well, let's just keep raising that bar, shall we? Then it becomes where anyone should be banned who spends less than $5 on Steam for a game, then $10... It's against what SteamGifts is about.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't see it as the same you could complain about the bars being raised, but hell I mean at least those people put money in it so they could raise their CV rather than waiting for a game to be free and then flood SteamGifts with it in hopes of increasing their CV for no money or true effort.

I don't really care about people giving away the one copy the should have gotten for themselves, what is wrong are the abusers who get multiple copies to profit on them (giveaway/trade) and by doing so discourage the companies from giving freebies altogether.

I just reported one guy who has already given away 4 copies of Racer 8 (free keys) and now 5 copies of Deadbreed (aslo free).
Steamgifts attracts the worst kind of people. Most come here for generosity but some only come cause of greed.

the giveaway page is covered in the deadbreed game, which is currently free, ban them all!!!! -_-

I like these spams only for one reason, that's the way i find out something is being given out.

Permalink

They do serve that purpose pretty well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's how I found out that Deadbreed was being given away for free if there was more variety I would just assume it would be due to the fact that a new bundle dropped.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Deadbreed beta keys are given away with enough frequency (it feels like I see an announcement at least once a month, even if it is limited numbers), that at this point, I am fairly surprised it hasn't been added to the exploited list and permanently deleted from the giveaway list.

I'd simply review the rule, allowing for giveaways of free games but putting CV of said games at zero. I understand this is easier said than done, but that's what I'd see as ideal solution

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Free games are retrospectively getting a bundle treatment, so one won't get full CV from them above $25.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That is basically what happens now. Free games get added to the exploited/bundle list.

That seems to be ideal to me as well. Didn't cost anything? No points. But feel free to give it away, because maybe someone missed out when it was free (it happens). I don't see a downside.

Good luck if youre waiting for new rules. this site will fill every time free games are being given because there will never be real consequences.
Now, if it was possible for created giveways to have rules prohibiting people who did that from entering instead of banlists, that would be nice

I just get the free game and sync my account. Games I own are filtered out so most of the time that takes care of the freebie spam.
