I recently discovered that the poor optimized Batman Arkham Night has been taken off the steam store. My question for you all is if you think this was the right choice by steam, or if they should have waited and let Rocksteady fix it with updates.

Thank God they pulled it.

a) people won't get burned
b) it means they are actually working to fix it. Otherwise it'd just be floating around, like Origins

Rocksteady didn't make the port, Iron Galaxy did (no doubt contracted by WB to push it out quick). Hence the bad mess. So while we should blame RS for not testing the PC port, we can't exactly blame THEM for the coding.

Seems like a good thing to me. The product is clearly broken and not ready for release.
Since they apparently lost money due to refunds it actually gives them that much more an incentive to fix the game, so they can start making money again. I really do believe if there weren't refunds they'd have kept the game on sale.

Now should this be done for all 'broken on release' titles? Depends on how broken it is and amount of refunds I suppose, but if the developer can fix the game relatively quickly then I don't think they should. I also don't think a refund should be requested until they've been given a chance to make things right. Power to the consumer and all that, but you have to give the developers a little slack as well - Magicka was pretty broken but they updated it near every day afterwards. You'll still get your refund if you request it in time.
In this case however, WB was deserving of the refunds since they botched the PC release so badly. Maybe this too will be incentive to not leave the PC version on the backburner, or more specifically not outsource it two months before release to a small studio that specializes in console ports.

this is definitely a good thing. maybe the bug publishers will finally start to treat pc gamers better and release higher quality products, instead of what we experienced in the last few years. many games from ea, ubisoft, wb where broken on release. seems like this time it will actually impact, what they love the most - their income.

Want's wrong with C:R? Now that it is out of Beta it runs (mostly) smooth for me. My system is 5 years old and doesn't have enough RAM for it. No random crashes, the only real complaint I have is the heavy vehicles are a little too OP except when you drive them yourself... but they always have been.

I have integrity, I don't make falsehoods to misdirect people. I do work for RWS, but it has nothing to do with that. During the Alpha it ran okay, during the beta I couldn't play it at all. Once released, as I said, it mostly ran fine for me, I chalked the FPS dips to me not quite making the system requirements. I ran on maxed out everything, I didn't have an FPS displayed but it ran comfortably for me. I don't care if a game isn't running a constant 60+ DPS, 30ish DPS is fine for me when I don't meet the requirements.

i7 930 (First gen) 2.8GHz (Not over clocked)
6GB Triple Channel DDR3 RAM
120 GB SSD
GTX 590 3GB ("SLI" All in one card). (running at reference clock)
Windows 8.1

Recommended:
i5 (Third Gen) 3.4 GHz
8GB RAM
AMD HD 7800 2GB

So based on the specs it requires and what I have, the fact I can run it maxed out without major problems other than an infrequent slowdown if too much is happening at once made me ask you what was wrong with it. I didn't really expect to be called a liar or have my integrity challenged. Sorry if questioning your opinion was offensive to you. I don't really follow reviews of items I already own, but I can see what you mean by others experiencing issues. Perhaps it isn't just the fact my system is underpowered like I had chalked it up to.

AC: Unity is the megaturd that's shown that Ubisoft is just milking the AC formula until there no more historical era to be recreated. After that, we can expect remastered/redux/director's cut versions of the series with improved graphics on the new hardware whatever time span. The AC4 was the last AC I enjoyed and the lead character is not even an assassin during most if not all of the game (bit fuzzy on the plot as it's been a while).

Thanks to the both of you. That's disappointing - I loved AA and AC, but AO just got too frustrating. And why would I spend any more money on AK, whether or not they optimize it, if they can't even be bothered to fix the game I already paid for?

What was broken? Because of all the bashing on forums and Facebook, I was under the impression that it was pretty much unplayable, but bought it a while ago anyway. I've played it for a few hours without any issues whatsoever.

Most common: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxJybfHi0Rw

If you're unlucky, game has few places where you'll get stuck - for example one of towers (that one can be "fixed" by abusing different bug) and Mad Hatter mission, which can spawn you out of map and checkpoint-save you, which means you are forced to start whole playthrough from start.

Yeah, I guess so. But you're right about the AI and the little FPS drops, it happens sometimes but it's not really a big deal :)

Actually, I dislike the ambiance of the city, with the snow theme and the empty places... But it's a decent game in my opinion.

It's been a while now, but I distinctly remember the very first boss fight in the game, the sound went completely out and didn't come back until after it was over. There was also a lot of texture glitching and such. It didn't make the game unplayable, but it was annoying enough that I stopped playing and figured I'd wait for a patch. Then I got caught up in other games and just never got back to it. It's possible that it's running better than the last time I played, so when I can free up some HD space I'll give it another go.

Steam has nothing to do with it being removed, no one there cares about the game being practically unplayable.
WB removed it for awhile until its fixed, to avoid more negative reviews
Also idk if Rocksteady will be fixing the game since they had no involvement in this port to begin with

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I get where you're coming from, but i still blame Rocksteady for the most part.
Putting their name on it, still makes them responsible towards their customer base. Not testing the port before release is just as irresponsible as having made the crap port themselves. Imo, anyway. :)

That said, i hope they never ask anything of Iron Galaxy... ever again. ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not their fault, i think, well, aside from distancing themselves and blaming the studio that worked on the game. In the end its WB that calls the shots, Rocksteady job was to make the game on console, and they did a fine job.
The publisher outsourced the pc port, and even then i cant blame Iron Galaxy Studios, ive read somewhere that a team had only 16 people working on the game.
I think they have good developers, ultimately the problem lies on WB bad business practices

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, i can at the very least wholeheartedly agree that WB deserves more flak than anyone.
Obviously the publisher always has the final say, can't remember one time where it hasn't been that way. And if they signed off on this, well... :/

As for the rest...
As for Rocksteady, even if it is like you say (not saying it isn't), like you yourself said, Rocksteady by distancing themselves, that was a dick move in itself. I mean, if they don't want to get flak for a port they didn't do or vet, they shouldn't stamp their name on it as the DEVs. And i mean on the PC, because people are not obligated to go fish for info on the net about who did what, it had their name on the Steam Store. Meaning, if things go great, they get all the credit, but if things go south, they take the cop-out. Can't totally forgive them for that. I mean, there have been PC ports in the past for other games where the developing team making said ports gets to stamp their name on it, not the team that developed the game for the consoles. This wasn't the case.

Don't really know where to stand regarding Galaxy Studios, i didn't have that info and still have mixed feelings after that.
I know all too well publishers can be jerks asking DEVs for unreasonable timeframes, don't know to what extent Iron Galaxy promised to deliver or not, though. But i'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt the most, i guess.

Still, thanks for that info. :)

Putting this game in this abysmal bad state on Steam for a price tag of 60$ game + 40$ SP is truly reverse Darwinism...Lucky the refund policy of Steam changed not so long ago and that a lot of the (pre-order) customers thanked the WB suits with a tsunami of (legitimate) very bad Steam users reviews...This release is by far a very botched and an extremely incompetent release!

That launch was a hot mess, capped at 30fps, people with AMD cards couldn't run it properly, even with settings maxed the damn thing looked inferior than on PS4 (yes, you read that right).

The wisest thing that WB could do is take off the game from shelves and digital outlets.

Why would AMD work with Rocksteady in the first place? Hell no, they did more than enough releasing that beta driver. The game ran like shit on AMD cards because it wasn't optimized, simple as that. It had a shitty performance on Nvidia cards too.
