Bumping! Also adding some probably off-topic thoughts of my own, but they are related closely:
They use TNR programs around here in New Jersey, but I am not sure how much of a dent that can even do longterm, and the results to wildlife being killed, and spreading of other diseases, makes me doubt its overall effectiveness vs. cost. There are some shelters around here too. A few places that take some donations, or you can buy things from also. Too many feral cats, and not any good answers to getting to the root of the problems... It is very frustrating! I might still donate, and I need to think about it some. I probably make less per month in my general assistance disability than most do in a day in my country, since I am not able to work. There are three cats here that were rescued from the streets. Some areas are overrun with feral activity though, since just a few cats can really change the ecosystem very quickly, and they are higher near the apex predator side of the tree.
We should be saving wildlife, and as human beings, we tend to only want to destroy in our greed, when the bottom line is about money. That is closest to the root of most of the problems than anything I can think of at this point... Instead of replacing and strengthening everything we consume or use up, it goes further and further into the negatives. This happens with resources, and it also happens with money in an interest banking system, hence why more and more poor numbers go up (people who gain money or resources, or in many cases this leading to both, do not replace, and continue to skim more and more off the top as they develop more means to gain more). Multiply less resources with more population totals, and you have a ticking timebomb, unfortunately.
Too bad programs like this one are not supported directly by the people in the local jurisdictions, as I think is and ethically/morally right from my point of view... It is more a human problem and responsibility than a cat one, as I see it. People are going south very fast these days; it seems more so now, but that is only because it gets exponentially worse left unchecked for decades. Probably past the point of no return for any of us. Already have done too much damage to make amends for easily, but we have only ourselves to blame for that. I have to fight for scraps through no fault of my own, since I have disabilities.
Humans cannot even save other humans on a grander scale, but I don't mean to bring a damper into things. I wish more attention were added to things like this. We have power to destroy, but we also have power to make things better, as I think is our intended purpose, if we were to try to examine ourselves and find one. I don't think many have much power anymore, as it is being taken away gradually, while enslavement through debt continues, and there is no outward thinking, only inward concerns in maintaining the status quo, and the struggle therein - it seems very interwoven.
Thanks for bringing this to (my) our attention! I may have nowhere to go very soon myself if things keep changing the way they have been... Getting well is too expensive for me, since I am too sick to work to afford to get well. I have very little fear of death for my future though, dealing with the kinds of diseases and illnesses I battle on a daily basis. The fear is in living on with them, as things progressively decline with health and with the economy and planet. I only wish humans here in terrible situations had more of a choice in the matter of their own life and death though.
Euthansia for some reason is okay for other creatures, but taboo for humans, even when the human might be tortmented far worse by having to suffer by living on every day. My prayers for the shelter and cats all around the world born into this kind of scenario with no help. I know firsthand: It becomes a scary place when those you rely on for help deny you enough care to live any kind of comfortable life through no fault of your own.

I have ongoing health problems, myself, and came very close to dying about five years ago. At that time I was so sick for so very long that there was nothing in my life but suffering and pain. It was beyond horrible, but it gave me an understanding of why some people choose "Death with Dignity." I managed to rally and get a handle on my health, but when there's no hope of getting better... Yeah, I can definitely understand.
I hope that you can find a way to improve your quality of life! hugs

Thank you so much for the nice words. Sad to hear you went through all of that... I think just taking care of my health as much as possible is the best thing I can be doing, but it is stressful when the laws and powers that be keep sending sick people through hoops. I wonder if their goal is to make them give up? My girlfriend got some really bad news too, so we'll have to see how it goes with that. Too early to know how bad it is ^ Nothing is impossible though. I can only just be here as much as possible for her for now. Some things that keep me moving forward are the people in my life I care about, and a sort of mantra I've heard and used myself at times that relates: "Don't give up five minutes before the miracle.". As long as I can hang on... some better treatments or cures could come about, so I keep the hope as much as I can. Just knowing more about my illnesses has given me a lot more than I had. Not everything I am battling is completely invisible, and I have validation that my problems are real, since people for some reason won't always take a person's word on stuff like that.
Too bad that there isn't more help for some of us... but it is far worse in some countries than here, so I also have to be grateful for things I do have... though I need a lot of help from friends and family to keep me afloat right now. Lots of silver linings in most things that seem really bad if I can try to shift my perspective a little bit. I wish you a lot of progress as far as keeping your own medical problems at bay, and I hope these cats (and more in the future) get the care that they need. I don't think there is anything more inspiring than the knowledge and idea that critters and people that are at a super low point can be taken care of by somebody who can give them everything they need and so much more! That's what it is about! I'll check back to see how the progress is going.
