DLCs are pushing up the price of bundle greatly, for me it would be much cheaper to individually buy missing games

I'm looking at the bundle pricing (I own parts of these bundles) and I see that we don't get the full bundle discount if we own partial items. Essentially, the bundle discount for partial item ownership appears to be adjusted to roughly be the same price as buying all the items. I can't say I've ever noticed this before.

For example, shadow of the tomb raider definitive, is 85% off, but since I own the base game, it's 56% off. Same with the collection bundle, 77% off, only available to me at 50%. Both end up calculating out within $0.20 of the base. That's some shady stuff right there.

It shows literally the same for me in a browser I never logged into Steam, so it ought to have nothing with game ownership.

I guess 50% is the standard discount of the bundle, and the extra sale pushes it to 74% in case of the complete bundle.

Thanks for the confirmation, guess I'll need to be a little smarter about keeping my eye on the fine print to see if I'm actually getting a deal in these complete your set bundles. Sure, I'll still get a good deal overall if I choose to buy, but expecting74% off and receiving 50% in actuality is a little depressive.

That's how steam bundles work. It takes prices of the unowned items that are part of the (complete-your-set) bundle and applies the bundle discount (in this case 50% for the collection, or 56% for the Shadow Definitive).

I've never noticed that. I figured Steam would give us the promotional discount on the remaining items as well. If you take a look at the screenshot, they have the promotional bundle percentage highlighted, not the base one. That makes it a bit shady in my opinion, making it seem like we get the promotional bundle price, not the standard bundle discount price.

If you look at the screenshot, it shows exactly what I described. You're missing 3 out of four items in the bundle. They are discounted (well, were discounted yesterday) x%. Steam sums the discounted prices of all missing items, slaps the bundle discount (-56%) on top and shows you the price as well as the discount calculated from the sum of non-discounted prices of these items, in this cased -74%. The reason why the full bundle is -85% is that the base game had a deeper discount than the DLCs so the sum of all four items' discounted prices with the bundle discount on top amounted to -85% from the sum of base prices of all items.

Simpler example:
Game 1 is -75% with the base price of $10
Game 2 is -50% with the base price of $10
bundle discount for Game 1+2 is 20%

Now, if you don't own any of the games, you can buy them both at -70% ($6)
If you have Game 1, you can buy Game 2 at -60% ($4)
If you have Game 2, you can buy Game 1 at -80% ($2)

So the percentage might seem different, but in reality you're getting the same discount in every case.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I see your logic here, but I still have an issue. My bundled price for Shadow of the Tomb Raider definitive edition (have base game) price for the bundle was roughly the advertized price for the complete bundle. Even if the base game was discounted by 90%, my deal for the dlc alone should cost less than the full bundle.

Same with the full Collection bundle, I calculated out the remaining items and it was still within cents of the complete bundle price.

This would be easier to figure out and explain if I also took a screenshot of the bundle pice details for my account. But, since we don't have that, I don't think we can resolve the discrepancy to an answer that would satisfy my skepticism about the pricing. If there was a reasonable discount vs the full bundle, I'd understand, but to have the pricing almost identical seems shady. adam1224's comment above verifies the pricing was not any different on the main page even for a non logged in user.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the help in figuring this out.

Edit:. I posted another screenshot of the current pricing. Shady = "your price", bundle sale, no "your price".

$22.00 for the bundle of remaining DLCs, still 56% - legit.

Tells me that the sale discounted games individually, expected, and only put on the 56% bundle discount on top, while advertising the 87% discount, shady.

It shouldn't matter what I own in the bundle or the individual item discounts, the storefront should honor the higher bundle discount, especially if it is advertising that to a user who already owns the games. That's damn deceptive, even if they mention the actual discount in the fine print.

Hey I wanted to let you know I was able to look at a similar sale via Ubisoft's South Park bundle, and I am able to figure out and understand the pricing better here. Having just two items (one of which I own) to use for the bundle calculations made things a lot easier to understand.

So, in the end, it all looks (mostly) legitimate.

I also wanted to mention that discrepancy where I came up with within $0.20 or so vs the actual bundle price on my calculations turned out to be Steam's total bundle discount is an approximation. For example, in the South Park bundle, the advertised discount is 78% for the game(s) in the bundle, but the actual discount is roughly (just under) 22.5%.

That's where everything really threw me off in the end - why prices didn't match up and why it all seemed like it was more of a shady deal than it really was. But, I'm still standing by the fact that the advertised discount number is still not the actual applied discount, which, yea, is shady. I'm pretty sure most regulations would require that companies don't round up a displayed discount value to make it look better than it is (78%), but rather have the actual discount (77.5%) value or round down (77%). But then again, I didn't look for any regulations, don't care that much at this point, because who's going to listen to me or change things anyway. Companies do whatever they please anymore.

Cool, but I already own Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Epic Games so yes. Anyways, thanks for your information!

Whoa, that price is inflated. I already own pretty much everything except the very old ones, multiplayer DLCs for TR 2013 and Lara Croft GO. Guess what? It still would cost me €27,85.

The bundle is kinda confusing, which I guess is the point.
In addition to having zero interest in buying the many multiplayer maps, outfits and weapons for Tomb Raider, I noticed that included in the price of the bundle as "items you don't own", are the "Definitive Upgrade" and the Croft Edition extras, which I already own in the Definitive Edition.

Strike that. I only own the base game. Forgot they decided to rename it "Definitive Edition" in the store and mark it as owned even though they just changed the name without giving away the extra content lol
If they want more money from me, they'll have to come up with a new game.

Why would anyone want to pay extra for those random character skins that should have been in the base game, I'll never know.
Guess they were hopeful...
