Who wouldn't want to be the one winning every giveaway? :P

I wish to use my name without the number.
Sax
Creeped around for 2 years without doing anything, missing a capital s and a weird picture.
What do you think about this (something along those lines):
Level | Earliest possible release |
---|---|
0 | 0,25 year (3 months) |
1 | 0,5 year (6 months) |
2 | 1 year |
3 | 1,5 year |
. | . |
. | . (steps of 0,5 years) |
. | . |
10 | 5 years |

Thanks for the hint of the broken link.
About my suggestion:
Yes. Only 3 months for level 0 as I can imagine there are a lot of users that only use it once or a week at its best and then never again. On the other hand the higher your level is the more established you are within community. It will be more likely people remember you. Would also be an indirect reward for contributors.

I've had the same name since I started Asheron's Call in 1998 (mashed my hand on keyboard and re-arranged the letters into some semblance of a word), so I don't see myself changing it any time soon. My MMO friends all call me TZ, and I'm not sure they could handle the change. The only drawback is people constantly tell me I've misspelled "Tzar". :(
I do like your idea, though -- especially the part where, when someone comes back and have lost their name, they're prompted to come up with a new one. Since I can't really see any drawbacks to this is at all, I'mm obliged to +1 it. :P

I'm not sure something will be done about that soon, my support ticket is on hold since 8 months (7 months in cg's queue)...
Anyway, I totally agree that server stability and performance is a more important thing to deal with: a shiny username in useless on a broken server :)

It wasn't related in my mind, it's just about what is critical and must be handled first, and what is not...

Plot twist: you contact him/her to come here change their nick, they like the place and don't leave anymore (most important, they keep the name).
Also:
"Hey! Didn't I already blacklisted that guy? How the heII did he escape? Better blacklist him again!!"
Everything's hidden because I'm kinda ashamed of it, didn't sound so stupid while it was in my head, sowwy :3

To be honest, that was me at the start as well.
Somehow, I logged in on SG 2 years ago, and then stumbled upon it again earlier this year when I did my first GA 7 months ago.
My first login, though was unintentional in terms of actually wanting to be part of the community, and when I discovered it again I was more curious and stuck around. I did sign in with my Steam account though, so this username comes from there and not chosen for SG specifically.

My user-names are never taken, as i'm usually trying to come, up with another
and original one, that has a good ring to my ear and not every bugger uses.
What you could do is add them on steam, bribe them with a game to change their name on sg >
figure if the name is available then or not (kinda depending how the db of sg is being kept/maintained) ...
Which gets me to: why one is only able to change his user name ONCE a YEAR
for trading purposes one might think - i'd highly doubt that ... once every quarter
or half year would ok but a whole year i don't know ...

I don't know... Like I said somewhere, I don't even know the person is gonna accept me on Steam. At this stage, I don't think so. :P
And, I think the long wait is just so people won't do it all the time. I understand it's there just so you can change if you REALLY want to, not to be like an avatar, that you change at will. It's really a bonus.

I fully support Coezo about this
Had bad experiences not here but in some MMOs and sites with ppl taking names and never coming back again, or for "reselling them". Yeah, RESELLING not available nicknames, mostly on big MMOs (saw that a lot on TERA)

I usually don't have that problem with my nickname and I use it almost everywhere, otherwise I use a shorter version of it. But nevertheless your suggestion sound reasonable and I also support it.

I'd also like to claim my username "BladeMaster", but it's already been taken by person who's registered 4 years ago and last logged on was 2 years ago.
For example, it'd be good if somebody who doesn't login for 1 year, gets his/her name changed to something randomly generated like "359182534" and if he/she logins, he/she gets notification about choosing new name.

I remember a comment/post from cg explaining the thing with the locked names but I can't seem to find the comment/post.

Do you remember what was the thread about?
No :/ . I can't even recall if it was cg thread or just a comment of his on a thread.
But I remember that cg was making an example with his own username and said that if he changes his name to X the "cg" username will be still unusable and I think he said that variations of it too, like cgg ccg or something like that. It's made like that so people won't get confused when someone changes their username.
I'm not 100% sure it was as I'm describing above but it was something between those lines.
EDIT: I tried google searching the site but I don't seem to find it. Maybe it was on the beta phase and it got deleted.

Well, thank you for trying.
On the ticket I opened, SleepyCat said he remembered a ticket where a user complained he could not change his name to another person's old name, but he didn't know if it was really an issue or human error. Must've been because of this. :( Oh well... I guess we're all out of luck. :P

When I registered to Steamgifts, I tried to choose the username Flicker, but it was taken. When I turned 1 year here, I tried to change it again, to no avail... I've always used flicker as a nickname on the internet, but I use coezo when it's taken as an alternative, as explained here (kind of a long text). As you can see, this user has registered 3 years ago, and has been last seen 3 years ago as well, have never done any GA, or won any GA, and has 11 GA entries. So we can safely assume this user is totally inactive.
I've opened a ticket to ask if SG handle inactive users in any way, or if it's possible to claim an inactive user name. At this time, there's no policy to handle that, so I'm making a suggestion.
If a user has been inactive for a period of time (1 year?), and their name is claimed by another user, they would have their name changed to their Steam user ID. In the case of numbers only, letter "u" (user) + their ID (e.g. u123456789). That is so the records (GAs, wins, entries, posts etc) wouldn't be screwed up.
Maybe it's extra work for support, and it can open up the possibility of abuse attempt... Maybe it can be a hidden thing (with no "button" to request it), and it'll be granted based on a case-to-case analysis (like my case here). :P
Anyway, people, feel free to improve the suggestion if you want. :)
PS: On a side note, while searching the forums, I found this topic, and decided to start the process myself, adding the user as well, but not sure if he'll accept me or be willing to help me with this. :P
I'll be adding other solid contributions to the suggestion here:
